Metal elitists no longer hold a monopoly on taste.
In fact, their taste is too exclusive, which ends up alienating others, only leading to resentment and conflict which further weakens the position of elitists.
It's no longer possible for elites to exclude people or taste in the internet age.
Focusing too narrowly on a particular elite band, scene and genre as was done before by elitists (evidenced by metal magazines and zines) is a moot point since it is accessible by all now.
The new form of elitist is the idort, one who can appreciate Blut aus Nord and Deathspell Omega simultaneously without distinguishing them as either patrician or pleb.
Metal elitism as a practice is dead and it has given way to hybridization of taste which expresses itself in the sound of new bands emerging on the scene.

The fact that so many books still name Deathspell Omega as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" black metal band ever only tells you how far black metal still is from becoming a serious art. Death metal critics have long recognized that the greatest death metal bands of all times are Demilich and Atheist, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Thrash critics rank the highly controversial Coroner over thrash bands who were highly popular in radio stations around the bay area. Black metal critics are still blinded by commercial success. Deathspell Omega sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Dath metal critics grow up listening to a lot of death metal of the past, thrash metal critics grow up listening to a lot of thrash metal of the past. Black metal critics are often totally ignorant of the black metal of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that Deathspell Omega did anything worthy of being saved.

Contemporary black metal bands never spoke highly of Deathspell Omega, and for good reason. They could never figure out why Deathspell Omega's songs should be regarded more highly than their own. They knew that Deathspell Omega were simply lucky to become a folk phenomenon (thanks to "Deathspell Omania", which had nothing to do with their musical merits). That phenomenon kept alive interest in their (mediocre) musical endeavours to this day. Nothing else grants Deathspell Omega more attention than, say, Dodecahedron or Ascension. There was nothing intrinsically better in the Deathspell Omega’s music. Nienhuis of Dodecahedron was certainly a far better songwriter than Khaos & Hasjarl. Dodecahedron were certainly much more skilled musicians than the 'Trve Three'. And Кpиcтoфop was a far more accomplished musician, capable of fusing Gregorian chants in “Litourgiya”; not to mention the far greater orthodox black metal bands who followed them in subsequent years or the first and second wave black metal bands themselves who initially spearheaded what Deathspell Omega merely later repackaged to the masses.

The song is style over substance. Uninteresting hyperfast riffs swapped out every twenty seconds with random acoustic and flamenco interludes thrown in for the sake of it. The band members are talented but that's it, nothing in the flurry of notes they center their music around is memorable or has staying power; it's all purely ephemeral. A technical riff flies by and for a second the sheer complexity of it might seem awe-inspiring, but as soon as that second is over nothing is left to enjoy. Like abruptly throwing in acoustic guitar for the sake of it? Nothing adds anything of value towards the song as a whole, the intro melody has no power or passion behind it, it's a fast (keyboard) riff that the band recreates many times over througout the song. You can be progressive while still writing interesting pieces in your music, this is about as interesting as Through the Fire and the Flames played at double the speed.

The acoustic guitar is first introduced at 1:30 and then the other acoustic part later comes in and that section serves as a build up to a climax at around 1:55. It certainly serves a purpose and I see nothing wrong with it.

The acoustic section could very well be played on electric guitar and would've flowed with the song better. There's nothing beautiful or emotional written in it as acoustic sections should be, it's just the guitarist switching instruments for a bit to show how diverse he is. The various ways in which the band recreates that intro riff become duller and duller with each incarnation, sounding less like interesting remodelings and more like originally discarded demos they threw in to pad time. The band certainly have a lot of ideas but they have no interesting way of connecting them or refining them, Atheist played progressive metal in the same vein (songs consisting of multiple complex riffs and parts ) but they understood how to piece everything together, there was a flow between segments and each segment came across as its owning interesting piece compared to the warm-up exercises Spiral Architect uses. I sure as hell couldn't play on the same level as they can but regardless technicality isn't a good gauge for determining the quality of music.

Just going to have to agree to disagree here. First of all, it's not like it's just mindlessly repeated. There are different leads and solos used. I think they connect ideas very well and the song is pieced together nicely.

I have nothing against acoustic guitar, I however like to see it done properly. The acoustic guitar is a beautiful instrument, excuse me for not liking to hear it bastardized with fast picking techniques that might as well be played on an electric guitar. Nothing about the acoustic segments are remotely beautiful or evocative, if played on their own no one would find anything impressive about it, instead they're just thrown into a blender of equally dull ideas focusing on style over substance.
