There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

/prod/ IRC is up!
To join, you can go tohttp://www.rizon.net/chat
Choose a nick, put #/prod/ as channel. Enter!
Or you can get a lightweight desktop client herehttps://hexchat.github.io/downloads.html

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP: posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a Soundcloudlink is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

Remember to check other peoples' clyp.it links to keep the thread healthy.

Had one years ago as a cheap multi-timbral synth - sold it and kept my Evolution EVS-1 for FM stuff but it's ok if you use an editor with it.

Pretty decent for a preset box. It's got two 48-patch banks for custom sounds loaded in via sysex. The factory presets are pretty cheesy but you can get some of them to sound good if you know how to process them with effects.

How do I get that lo-fi kind of sound in electronic tracks? Like burial, paul kalkbrenner, kolsch, etc

vinyl distortion in ableton is pretty nice, also mid-heavy eq and distortion in general

I sometimes use a slight bitcrush on the reverb channel which also sounds bretty lo-fi

do you use pirated kicks and claps? can you be sued for that? how can they even tell? should this be a major concern for someone making beats with pirated bass drum and hi hat sounds
>>
>>63260451
Yes, theoretically, they can't, no
>>
>>63260551
can they tell if you are using a cracked vst? ive been using one cracked vst with a midi keyboard.
btw does it make you mad to think that fuckers would try to copyright individual drum sounds? it does me

did you try dBlue Crusher? I believe it's free
>>
>>63260726
oh okay thanks, one more question and then i will leave you alone. is it bad to use synthesizer presets? i use them or sometimes i alter the presets to have different waveform, pitch, chorus, etc but many of my tracks use presets that have very little or nothing done to them
>>
>>63260609
>does it make you mad to think that fuckers would try to copyright individual drum sounds? it does me
i think copyright as it pertains to sampling is just ridiculous as a whole. as long as the artist you sample is credited there should be no other requirements in terms of compensating them or anything
>>
>>63260551
Wasn't BT sued and fined for using a few seconds of allegedly sampled breaks few-ish years ago?
>>
>>63260810
No, people will tell you otherwise though

At some point you'll reach a stage where you'll want to synthesise your own sounds anyway because it gives you more control, and in my opinion you might as well start doing that sooner rather than later, but it's not inherently bad.

>>63260792
hmm I'll look into it, the problem for me is I'm on OS X and 32-bit plugins like the TAL ones don't work very well
>>
>>63260956
I'd say using breaks is different because there's some arrangement, i.e. composition, going on, rather than just taking one drum sound. But I can't imagine anyone getting sued for using another artist's kick or anything

Let's talk filters.

Hey /prod/. I don't want this to turn into an advertisement plug, but does anyone know any good mix/mastering services that don't break the bank? What I'm looking for is mixes/masters from someone who has worked in multiple genres. The stuff I'm looking to get mix/mastered is kind of a mix of progressive rock, orchestral/classical, maybe orchestral jazz fusion, and etc. If I had to nail down just 2 genre names it would be classical music and jazz.

So yeah, does anyone know of any good people and if not or it's not allowed to say for some reason does anyone know where I can look? Thanks.

That one chord doesn't fit in my opinion. I'll tell you when from the first time it comes in. 0:11. Maybe you can make it a transition or add it everyone in a while (though sparingly), but I wouldn't make it part of the main chord progression because it doesn't give out a feeling of resolution/resolvement of the chord progression.

I need advice. I'm poor and I'm trying to decide.
Should I buy a preowned effects modulator of sorts or should I replace my pc with a Mac desktop and dual boot win10 on it?
>>
>>63268495
I think mac isn't worth it for how highly people talk about it just because of the strength to price ratio

the only reason I would use mac is if I learned on a mac exclusive daw honestly

just replace your cpu and mobo and maybe more ram if you need to is what I would do

macs aren't bad but theyre way over priced compared to using windows build

Help me out prod....I'm trying to get more treble/high end into this sample I'm working with but can't do it with EQ because there's all this other noise in the sample that I don't want. Is there any way to do this in ableton?
If worse comes to worst I'll find a synth that fits and play something over the top but I think there's more to be brought out of the sample if I could get to it...
>>
>>63269015
>If worse comes to worst I'll find a synth that fits

I was going to suggest trying something similar to this, play it's volume low so that you can't distinguish it from the instrument it is pairing with, unless you prefer the blend
>>

adding more sound to cover up the other sound wont end up nicely you should try to eq the sample in the problem areas with precise cuts but not destroy the audio by over doing it

Hey /prod/, how do I make dense mixes? I don't mean metal or dubstep grit, more like the random flourishes hidden deep in an easy indie/art pop track. I suppose big EQ cuts and volume are key if you wanna keep it subtle and space effects can help, but I could really use an in-depth case study.

i only added the downsampling/bitcrushing because if i didn't then it would just be the same 4 bars over and over since i cant write a progression to save my life

I've been working with Ableton lately, I love it, however, sometimes I'll have a sidechain stuck on a synth, (I use the stock compressor's sidechain.) and as soon as I kick on the sidechain it goes quiet.

I thought I fixed it by putting another compressor at the end of the load. It sounds great and the sidechain on the front still works.

So what gives? Is this a viable solution? Is there a better way? Why does the sidechain make my track quiet?

A guy I know came to me because a friend of his with a studio from the 70s just died and needs my help. I have been offered first dibs on any gear I want. He came to me since I've got lots of experience. Everything will eventually be being sold off.

However there's a microphone called a Calrec, he said it was a Colrec but I'm guessing that was a typo. It comes with a pre-amp and a flight case. I'm yet to take a look at it since I need to find time to do so and I'm too busy at the moment.

Anybody have any experience with these microphones? They're an English brand that's seemingly quite prestigious and I have seen some of their desks going for $60k and were used by the BBC.

Any help in regards to value, usage and comparisons would really help. Lots of stuff available for sale including some nice monitors

I've been using ableton lately and I'm struggling with some kind of shit I cannot explain. After using it for a while, each time I press the play button a distorted buzz sounds periodically. 4 or 8 oversampling is not uncommon in softsynths. For example asynth has 8x oversampling which boils down to 350 khz when you play in 44.1.
>>
>>63277223

I have 1000 bucks to spend on gear. Other than an audio interface I just use Logic and software shit for everything.

Is there an analog synth and/or sequencer that I can get that will give me more versatility than ES2/Sculpture/software? It seems like it would be fun as hell to get an MPC or an old Roland synth but I need to budget that shit.

Honestly, just buy some soft synths unless you really want a hardware synth. Sylenth1 and massive are far easier to use than the es2. I used to use it and got used to it, when I got the other two I found them so easy to use. You could look into building kits, always fun if you really want hardware. A buddy of mine had a little mini korg and loves it. I would personally drop the money on mics and compressors but I have different tastes

Sorry for the late reply
Thanks man. Okay well when it comes to original sound design, it sounds cliche but think outside the box. Star Wars sound design is really weird when you look at the source files. You need to have a microphone and patience. Science fiction is nice because there's no realistic sound that you have to represent. You also need to be able to think about how sounds can change. I've used a hi-hat to create a spaceship sound. Feedback and delays are vital.

Layering and compression though, what you want to do it basically split the sound you want up into 3 parts, highs, mids and lows. You want to pay all your attention to each layer. So say for big porter Robinson style supersaws you would layer a low end one that's mostly bass/sub, a midrange one that contains the grit and main body of the sound and a high end one that has the detail and sparkle so you could have a slight bit of white noise in that. It's the same for film sound design. Gunshots we split up into 2 or 3 sections, body (the weight of the gunshot), detail (like the bolt travelling forward) and crack (stuff like the high end and spatial part of the sound).

It's the same principle in synthesis.

Compression is important because it brings a level balance to your sound. With bass instruments you want to be quite aggressive with compression. Anything from a 4:1 and above. Another good trick is parallel compression. With that what you do is buss your sound to an auxiliary channel, then OVER compress and slightly distort that channel. That helps to push out the transients and gives a little bit of a distorted "platform" (as I call it) for the rest of the sound to sit on. So you then put this quite quiet in the mix. So that you can't obviously hear it but it still has an impression on the sound.
>>

I'm a total amateur so feel free to discard this:

I like the sound and structure, especially in the beginning parts, but it sounds like it needs some heavy EQ and/or compression adjustment. The instrument separation isn't good, and the impact on most of the sounds seems to be really poor. The transients don't sound like they're bleeding through.

I don't know if you just haven't mixed it already or what.

As for the song itself:

I don't really like the vocals that come in at 2:50. They should be chopped up more or changed or something. They seem like they were just kind of thrown in.

The tempo speed-up seems unnecessary and doesn't really do anything to the song. It doesn't help make it seem less repetitive; it just seems jarring. It actually kind of makes it worse. I really like tempo changes in some songs, but it doesn't seem to fit here.

In general, it kind of sounds like it's run out of original content in general by around 2:04 or so. I'd maybe redo everything after 2:04, but keep everything before it other than mixing adjustments.
>>
>>63289901

I'd have a way to run it semi-cheaply. Especially if I prune files every 24-48 hours or something.
>>
>>63290562
please anon spurdo is the only way to distract myself from how bad i am
>>
>>63291062
spurdo is probably the best meme imo
>>
>>63291020
And I'd also restrict it to like no more than 5 uploads per IP address per day.

How many people would value that, though? I have a fairly costly audio setup so I really like FLAC whenever I can get it. 320kbps isn't too bad but when I'm on some site, if it says MP3 you don't really know what you're getting without downloading the file and analyzing it.

I know many /mu/tants and probably some producers don't give much of a a shit about lossy vs. lossless though.
>>
>>63291107
1 vote for giving a sht
>>
>>63291107
I would like the no audio degradation

i use wav myself but I don't use tags or run out space so I don't really need flac but they are both lossless

5 uploads a day is no problem I really wouldn't care about that because its not like I upload 5 thing to clyp.it even in a week

probably the only problem I see happening is some fags would maybe be afraid/accusing you of their music being stolen or whatever
>>
>>63291394
Yeah, I'd only store it as FLAC on the server because it takes way less space and bandwidth than WAV.

And I don't think piracy will be an issue. I can host it with a provider that doesn't care about copyright violation. Also, since files will only be up for 24 hours (maybe less), it wouldn't be a great distribution channel for pirates. I could even make it so that files can only ever be uploaded once, so after 24 hours you can't upload it again.

If I still do find someone is trying to use the site just to share pirated songs and does it a lot, I can restrict them from it. If I really need to I can probably get a volunteer or two from /mu/. I severely doubt anyone other than a handful of /mu/ and maybe reddit people will ever find it or use it though.

How is the Monomachine, by the way? It seems really cool as a combination of a synth and a sequencer, and I like how you can fuck with the settings/filters and record it as you mess with the knobs, but is it powerful enough for 800 bucks?
>>
>>63291930
I strongly considered getting one myself, but I don't think I could justify the price. I also read reports of other people who really liked it, but eventually sold it off because they also thought it wasn't worth the price.

Some other synth sequencers have a similar method of fucking with parameters and persisting the changes as it's playing.

I still kind of want one though.
>>

>don't think I could justify the price

literally every hardware I look at
>>
how do i get my hands to work together?
>>
>>63292409
It's even more frustrating because even the really expensive ones don't necessarily sound any better than good and well-parameterized soft synths. And even a good MIDI controller that you map properly to a soft synth has a pretty similar workflow to any hardware synth.

They just look and feel so cool and are nice for improvising and fucking around.

Trying to talk myself into shelling out a ton of money for something just because "lol it's cool" isn't a great feeling.
>>
>>63292504
practice at a slow tempo and gradually increase your speed
>>
>>63292569
ill give it a try

i feel so fucking dumb trying to keep both hands doing what i want and in rhythm
>>
>>63292857
its pretty hard

i mainly am practiced on guitar but keys are super hard for me to play decently
>>
>>63283907
This is massive i'm p sure.

How can I take the loose, improvisational sound that comes from actually playing an instrument and being able to fuck with the knobs and settings on the fly and achieve it with a DAW and digital tools?
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Btr4oFR2W6c

how do i make music like salyu x salyu
>>
>>63292923
probably the best thing would be to get a decent midi controller with weighted keys and aftertouch and turn off quantize in your daw and just play

i have a shitty oxygen 25 4th gen with no weight on keys and no aftertouch and it still feels more realistic than sequencing in piano roll
>>
>>63292923
you record yourself playing, and record that to midi, then you have your synth playing the midi that you recorded, while you mess with knobs, and you record the whole thing
if you can't play an instrument, then write it all in anyway, and keep it super quantized, and then when you have a good sequence down, humanize it and drag notes off the grid and off time and keep a steady flow and rhythm to the notes until you have something you like

what do you do when you hit a brick wall with a song composition wise

delete it and move on if you hate it or compress it and put it on a usb or something like dropbox if you think its good

>>63293148
this is why i try to separate sound design and composition because i get stuck from doing too much shit at once

here's the composition in question
excuse the ghetto rap-ass intro, it's just there because I needed one, I'll re-write it later. It's the weakest part of the song.

It ends at :24.

also the production sucks because it has at most 2 hours of work put into it

>>63293200
I honestly love the piece (Save for the beginning), it's one of my stronger ones. I just don't know what to do to make it longer.
>>
>>63293317
>https://clyp.it/lsxccjgj
if this is the piece i think its pretty nice

i would personally do something cheesy and predictable like a synth or piano bass note with a long decay at the end and bounce to audio file and reversed for tension and then have a harder part play

Slow at the beginning, but towards the end is where I want to know how bad the mix is, thanks. It also has a long as hell outro

Whats the blender / GIMP of synthesizers?

Downloaded LMMS and Reaper. Lets see which one I like more

reaper is better imo

Ardour looks top notch too.

>tfw just recently found out vst works on Linux too
>only reason I kept /prod/ing on Windows was because of the simplicity of vst
>have amassed giant collection of vsts and kontakt libraries
>now thinking of making the switch but can't be arsed to take an entire day to transfer my 2 daws, vsts and sample collection, alon g with all my projects and organize shit until it all works

One of those moments when i wish I could go back in time and tell my past self to not be so stupid and put all day stuff on a ectermal drive or somethin.
Anyway, best Linux distro for the music makings? Running renoise/ableton with kontakt and a shitton of vsts btw.

barebones wip

>>63295162
I like this, I feel like it could use a stiffer, heavier hihat though, and if possible, that kick should be a little bit longer

damn such a chill track man im digging this a lot

Thanks for the feedback.
>>
>>63289634
I keep thinking I should do this by setting up a basic template in my daw so that I have something like a real studio setup, drum machine, bass synth, lead synth, sample player loaded up, and all my effects and compression in place, but I never get round to it so everytime I open my daw I start from scratch again...maybe one day
>>
God damnit. Ableton suddenly can't find shit in the browser so I can't work on anything. I have no idea how to fix this. Has anyone encountered this before? I'm fucked if I have to uninstall and install all these VSTs again.
>>
Good orchestral libraries for kontakt?
>>
>>63297357
Cine matrics or something that starts with cine

>>63293059
Reverse samples
Look at melodies, transpose or invert them
Play around with the chords on a piano and find what relates to them
>>
>>63297509
thanks anon
>>
>>63297022
Re-locate the VST folder in preferences and re-load all the sample folders on the sidebar, it should do it.

You mean CineSamples, they're pretty god-tier, especially Cinebrass, best orchestral/film brass articulations out there.

This happened to me once, I tried everything but then the fix was just to restart my computer lol

What effect does recording on to tapes have on sound? I'm looking to make some of my tracks sound less sterile and if it's affordable I might get a tape recorder or something
>>
>>63299221
Just pirate Waves and use Kramer Tape. It just makes stuff more "warm" (read: noisy) It's just a pleasant sort of analogue noise, also some analog harmonic excitement. These are all emulated in VST plugins tho. Of course you're gunna get all your audiophiles here who're gonna be like "EMULATIONS SUCK", but the difference is minimal, if any, and I mean, for someone that doesn't even know what it does you should start with some software at least.
>>
Are USB MIDI cables normally expensive? I keep seeing them for $30 - $50. There's lots of cables that are sold for like ten times for what their actually worth, like HDMI cables.
>>
>>63299602
MIDI cables are pretty cheap.
