So I'm trying to get into electronic music more than basic IDM shit like Aphex Twin & Boards of Canada, Autechre, etc.

I checked out Virgo (s/t) for an example of Chicago House album, and I'm currently listening to pic related (Robert Hood - Internal Empire) as an example of Detroit Techno. I really am lost here, and was wondering if there was a good essentials chart or something with albums/singles covering the various subgenres, or should I just go through RYM top charts for genres. The latter seems like it might be more of a hassle and /mu/ has usually lead me in the right direction as far as music. So tldr: is there a good chart that lists essential artists/albums/singles/etc from the various electronic subgenres (namely the dance type stuff: House, Techno, Garage, etc)?

>So tldr: is there a good chart that lists essential artists/albums/singles/etc from the various electronic subgenres
Not really, everytime one has tried to have been created it has been full of problems.

Best thing would be to explore labels that the releases you like were on and then look for other artist on that label who you like, explore their work on other labels and so on.
>>
is jimmy edgar gay?
>>
>>62389692
every time anyone asks for a chart they're usually met with banter and swears. Watch some documentaries and then look up the artists in them. Go watch Pump Up The Volume on youtube and Rewind 4ever for house and garage respectively. Once you start watching music docs on youtube it usually recommends you more, so just follow the trail. Or just google 'seminal "insert genre" releases'.

Thanks for the honest answer, it sounds like a sound method, I figured it was worth asking (for a chart) though just for good measure.
>>62389794
>every time anyone asks for a chart they're usually met with banter and swears.
lol I expected this, it's cool. I had a feeling it's been asked countless times before and I was hesitant on asking but figured it was worth a shot. I took down the names of both documentaries to watch as well, thanks again. And yeah, I was using RYM and google to basically find out a good place to start. I think I'll be fine.

Best thing about it is that you get a breadth of experience and develop a unique taste rather than just copying someone else's opinions and taste. Bad thing is that it takes forever to properly get to know a genre by that method but you will still pick up the big releases in that way.

There is this for "essential" labels but it has problems as well.

Yeah this seems like a much more personal way of taste development rather than going through essential charts and branching off from there. I'm enjoying this Robert Hood album right now (Internal Empire) then I got Minimal Nation up next. As far as after that I'll figure it out. I think I'm just going to go through a bunch of artists/labels/etc, read more about the genres and their history, listen to shit I like and go from there.
>>62390338
I rarely go out, but are there even clubs in the USA that play good dance music? It seems around here it's just bottom of the barrel EDM and brostep. At least in my immediate area. Maybe I should look more into the local scene and see if there's some places/events that I normally don't hear about. Most of our local clubs play Reggaeton and top 40 rap most nights.
>>
>>62390387

check resident advisor and find some good clubs in your area, meet people and get more indepth in ur cities club scene. Most of this music is best at a club.

Another fairly good way is mixes and radio sets since it introduces you to several different artists and mixes often have rare (in old mixes) or brand new tracks (in new mixes) in them. The big labels will often have maybe one or two mix CDs in their catalogue.

I live a quiet life on the prairie, I've grown up in tampa. I'm going to an event next march with people from skrillex's label. The clubs here aren't like the clubs in Europe I don't think. Guest apperances include the likes of Gucci Mane and Yung Thug lots of twerking and money and sex which is nice. It's that or the "Trap EDM" scene which is like watered down Gucci Mane and Yung Thug music wise but I really don't love that music there are easy raver girls there though. There's also one breaks guy who has a spot but I swear it's the worst he's in his 40s now and has a harem of strippers at his events and the crowd is in their 30s. There's also the underground rave scene or whatever where they do lots of illegal partys which don't sound terrible but they're not too enticing either as the best DJs still just play trap/dubstep/edm which is just not incredible. And there's the secret partys at this one guys estate which sometimes have cool guest musicans but a lot of the time don't.

Anyways, you're right I should get out more. I'd like to leave this place and get to see London and Berlin though you guys hyped it up for me. I really do feel like there's more variety in europe as well saying "EDM" hasn't really changed very much since skrillex got popular as far as I can tell. Rap still sounds good, honestly I'd say the best nights are when yung thug and gucci mane and wiz khlafia and lil wayne and the such are here. I want to be there at a yung thug night, shit must be crazy.

>>
>>62390840
dude i live in the fucking frozen prairies of canada and i get out to some sick events pretty much every week. You gotta get hip with what ur local djs are doing, then expand out from there. Find out whos putting on underground events in your city, or even start putting them on yourself. I guarantee their is some half decent stuff happening near you. I thought there was NOTHING from where im from, but i turned out to be sooooo fucking wrong.

But if u can get out to Europe, do it. I havent been to Europe but you should always be trying to travel.
>>
>>62389615
Melbourne is definitely hitting a serious stride at the moment, and the slow influx of refugees from Sydney is helping a little too.

There is a few micro-scenes that are doing really good things, although all of the stuff I am super into often ends up losing the dudes who run it money because not enough people show up. They aren't too fussed though.

Not normally my style but this dude closed after Efdemin and few weeks back and absolutely smashed it, and this set is all original tunes https://soundcloud.com/systemma1/74-shedbug
If we got a decent 500 person capacity venue I would basically have no issue with how Melbourne is. I hate having to not see internationals I like because I know I'll have a bad time at the venues we currently have.

There also seems to be a shift back to really light disco/disco-house stuff amongst the fashionista crowd which is nice, it keeps the trendy idiots away from good stuff.
>>
>>62391075
I've only started getting out more recently, and usually don't have enough money to go see internationals. Are there really people migrating from Sydney? I've seen talk of it but it's mostly staunch Sydney-siders proclaiming they won't do it.

What's good at the moment? I think Albrecht La'brooy are playing Daydreams on Sunday for free, and I think it's going to be live. If you can I really recommend catching Miris. That was only their second show that I caught them at, that and the previous one were both at Loop. It was pretty great, everyone just sat on the floor and didn't take their eyes off them for the entire thing, absolutely not what I was expecting but I guess what else can you do in a bar that small?
>>
>>62390978
"that's a good idea desu, I'll do this as well."
>>
>>62391253
I'm going out less than I used to because I basically don't have time. I try though when something looks good but often that's just internationals desu.

Next locals only thing that looks decent to me is probably http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?804712 , they are all great.

I've met quite a few people who have moved down from sydney and used the lockouts as an excuse, and there are a few good djs/acts who have moved down in the past year or so. Melbourne has always been the hub of music in Australia though so this isn't anything super new.

Daydreams and that kind of thing is exactly what I meant in
>>62391075
>There also seems to be a shift back to really light disco/disco-house stuff amongst the fashionista crowd which is nice, it keeps the trendy idiots away from good stuff

I got dragged there by a friend for his birthday and it was fucking horrendous. Terrible crowd, music was tuned awfully and the DJ's just aren't very interesting.

Was the Miri thing in December? If so a mate of my was doing the visuals for it and I meant to go, something popped up though.

This has been the case in Melbourne for years. Also, I think we have some great venues in Melbourne and some spaces that should be utilised more for parties. You miss gigs because of where they are? I mean I understand not wanting to go to Boney or something for a gig, but the Mercat, Lounge and a few others are fantastic clubs and we should support them as much as possible.

These might be stupid questions but;
Why do labels include old songs in new compilations? I hate it when I think I've found a great new release and it's from 2013 or something
And why do some songs get released on different labels that are not related to each other? If I was a label owner I would want my releases to be exclusive

Make a plan for your party (What theme you're going for, which DJs you'll book, a list of possible venues etc.)
Make a budget and work out how much you need to charge to break even/make money

Get artwork made up

ok, thanks for the input. do you know people who do this?
i talked to a girl who used to throw some pretty big parties and she told me that the money you gotta bring really depend on the venue and the contract you have with them. sometimes you got to bring the money down first (painful), sometimes they'll pay all the fees for you and you just have to cash it out... etc.

Internationals are a totally different ballpark though.

I've got friends who tour artists that are from 2k-14k a gig, and these are artists who are actually very talented and worth seeing.

There is a reason a Marcell Dettman club show is like 45 bucks.

yeah but live performance are another story though.

>There is a reason a Marcell Dettman club show is like 45 bucks.

how much do you reckon dettman is paid for a night? not that he's the kind of bloke i would like to book.
>>
>>62400018

Nah these are DJ's.

Apparently Moodymann was like 14k per set when he was in Melbourne last and he played two at that Hole and Corner thing. Absolutely crazy.

Dettman is over 10k apparently, at least over here. Not sure how much of that is payment fee and how much is Melbournes cut of the flights/hotel etc.

I'd struggle to bring myself to go and see him here because of the crowd it would bring but the dude is an absolute don. He's probably the highest profile act I will 100% stand by. You just need to not catch a festival set.
