I just learned it through playing drums so explaining it is hard.
The way you learn drumming is by watching and repeating, there's very little intricacies in drumming, you just hit the correct drums at the correct time and you're drumming. There's very little techniques to employ that will drastically change your sound and impact on the music. Writing is where you get a change in sound and impact. 90% of techniques you learn in drumming are techniques that allows you to be more efficient (i.e will tire you out less, will allow you to go faster or will help you stay on time better) and the rest are smaller techniques that will make your playing more groovy (i.e things like ghost notes, paradiddles etc), though that's not so much a thing in extreme metal but is employed a lot in prog.
So with that said your idea of there being very little difference between different bands drumming is true. You can't just switch an amp or use a different dist pedal and get a whole different sound with drums. What differs bands from each other is in how they write their drum lines, there's a lot of phrasing, themeing and overall planning in a good drummers music

I'll just take the best example in how brilliantly he phrases his lines out of this song.
The first thing you hear is the blast beat, what do you notice with it? It's weirdly slow compared to the rest of the drumming, isn't it? That's intentional. I'll come back to that later
Note at 0:39 how he goes into double bass with very little extras added just to let the guitars ring out and have their spotlight, he even hits the cymbal softer just to keep it out of the way of the guitars at that part, only hitting a few of them with normal force to accentuate shit. Perfect. I'll skip on most of the small things he does other than that cause I don't feel like wall of texting this thing too hard but he keeps doing these tiny adjustments to his playing just to accentuate the parts of the songs that needs accentuating. That's one of the small things a great drummer does that a mediocre drummer does not.
The writing in these parts are also just downright brilliant, his hi hat is mic'd up loud as fuck and puts itself perfectly in the mix when he goes for the hi hat blast beats. It also makes the part around 2:34 way less boring than it otherwise could have been, that riff is slow with little interest in it, the drummer adds interest through the constant droning hi hat while alternating his bass/snare beat to create interest in an otherwise boring section. Then when the ride part comes in right after that he lowers the drums by going for a more simple line with the bass and the snare drum and having the ride mic'd up lower in the mix than the hi hat is done just to lower the drums additionally in the song to let the guitar riff shine through because it stopped being monotone and added more interesting bits when they switched over. That dynamic between the guitars and the drums with the drums taking point at some points and guitars at others is not done nearly enough in black metal.

after the quiet bit at 3:56-5:55 you get a barrage of double bass drums, at a speed that was never in the song earlier, this is where that intentional thing from the start of the song comes in. Motherfucker played the entire song up to this point slower than this part just to accentuate this shit. How fucking brilliant is that? Insanely brilliant. The drum rolls here are also fucking fantastic but the best bit is right after that when he starts the blast beat again at 6:10, remember how I said the blast beat from the start was slightly slow? This is it at full speed, motherfucker slowed down the blast beat for 4 full minutes of song just to accentuate this shit and man was it worth it. The explosion would not be the same if all he did was play the same blast beat at the same speed he used earlier in the song, the reason that reintro of the song makes my cock so erect every time I hear it is because of how much he planned that shit. But all he really did was just go a little bit faster, there's no technique in there, just a dude playing a bit faster. But the planning and phrasing of that re entry with the slow clean guitar chord playing right before it is just astounding.
Then there's the ending which is fantastic, the way he slows down the drums at the very last part is just crazy good.
