Post personal favorite metal album this decade so far. Post a sample song or bandcamp page or w/e, too so others are more motivated to check it out!

Mine's λόγος by Antediluvian. The kind of technical metal you see from Demilich//Gorguts/Deathspell combined with the occult feel of Incantation/Portal? I fucks with it.

Dimmu irritates me so much. It's like CoF in that it's jumping on the spoopy scary satanist bandwagon because it worked for the norwegians. At least they were committed, whereas these bands just use the imagery to make themselves look "scary", and they're perfect bands to attract girls with no taste who pretend they like black metal. The Jesus is a Cunt shirt is exactly the kind of juvenile name calling to provoke and attract attention that gives the metal scene as a whole a bad name.

tl;dr CoF and Dimmu are shit

the term was invented by CLT just to show how people used music as an accessory to image. And it ended up succeeding beyond his wildest dreams.

I'm not really a fan of the notion of "well neckbeard metalheads also enjoy and make this kind of music so it's /metal/ approved"

dungeon synth is entirely not metal
>>
>>61925583
Venom
>>
>>61925549
S-senpai noticed me. I just tend to think of BoO as the forerunners of djent as it is today, leading the way for all the awful deathcore bands of the mid/late 2000s to morph into awful djent bands, effectively improving their viable lifespan as commercial entities by jumping bandwagons. You're right in that there's other bands also to blame, they were just the first to come to mind.
>>
>>61925583
Heavy Load
>>
>>61925639
considering that most dungeon synth projects are side projects of established metal acts, and that the genre was basically started by varg's prison records, it makes sense to me to say it's relevant. especially considering that some dungeon synth artists still have BM elements such as vocals or occasional guitars

Memes aside, what do you think of Pantera's music?
>>
>>61925685
Periphery singlehandedly caused everything wrong with djent. Everything bad about djent is the fault of Periphery, more specifically Misha Mansoor. How unsurprising that he's related to John Petrucci from Dream Theater, his uncle helped set the stage for everything wrong with progressive music so Misha could put the final nail in the coffin.
>>
>>61925814
Ranges from great to terrible.
>>
>>61925685
BOO didn't introduce djent in their sound until The Discovery. Rareform did that back in '08. If you're going to blame anyone for the existence of djent, anyways, it's Periphery or Textures. And I can't think of many mid-00s deathcore bands that went djent. Like, maybe Whitechapel's recent stuff qualifies, but more of them went towards generic Nuclear Blast-y DM (see Annotations of an Autopsy and JFAC's first couple post-Doom releases)

glad to see other people doing this. it makes a lot of sense imo - helps to point out stuff you tried and didn't like, and by narrowing things down makes it more useful as a recommendation tool

as for me, mostly same as last time - about the new stuff though:
Hollow is 6/10. some strong moments especially during solos but leans oddly hard on the chugprog cliches which is odd since it seemed more oldschool from the cover
It Prevail is solid 6/10, for fans of Misery Signals. Not memorable but very feelsy
Maestrick is 8/10, was really highly impressed by it. Power/prog but incredibly colorful and diverse. Long track at the end drags a bit but what metal bands can actually pull off a 21-minute track well?
Thunder Way was 7/10, very good musicianship and production but tracks feel a bit padded. One riff reminded me oddly of Galneryus, lol
Nawather is sort of Myrath-ish but much more riffy and engaging. Still 5/10, but could go up.
Ethernity is 1/10. Ugh. Awful chugpower. Same with Nathania.
Orphan Gypsy is pure power metal and a really amazing example of it, the melodic sense feels a bit Lost Horizon-ish at times even... 8/10.
Aseptic White Age was like a less spazzy Ephel Duath, mixed with some of Leprous' style. Pretty neat atmosphere and use of noise, but sort of cliche jazz metal otherwise - 4/10. Leprous fans may like though.

if you like Old school DM you'd probably like Shub-Niggurath

I'm only gonna mention the albums I liked on my chart
Both absu albums were certified dank
Tormentor is my shit and I wish attila would have kept doing that vocal shit on DMDS
That morbid angel album has a 10/10 first track but the rest is kinda meh
Imperial triumphant was better than I was led to believe
Hades is fucking perfect
Deus volt uknowwhati'msayin
twilightfall is super underrated
bathory is bathory
I has some dank riffs and considered dead is my fav gorguts album because i'm a contrarian

Oh god. Okay you got me.
Fuck I love this damn band.
>>
>>61928585
Goddamn his voice was so big before the cancer
>>
>>61928640
The part at 5:00 where he builds up from a mutter to a scream is totally nu-metal as fuck but the way he does it makes it seem legitimately deranged and furious

kyo is incredible
>>
>>61928672
I'm not the only one who noticed it. Shit, his growls are wonderful on that. On The Satanist he sounds raspy as fuck

>>61928696
>mutter to a scream is nu-metal as fuck
What the hell does that mean? Just sounds like good build up to me.
>>
>>61928727
it just reminds me of the opening of Bodies by Drowning Pool :V

the whole whispered/muttered style isn't too common in metal so i mostly associate it with nu-metal
>>
>>61928672
any voice would sound like that too if you layered it as much as he does
>>
>>61928752
I'm grateful I don't recognize the similarity. Pretty sure if I ruined Vinushka for myself like that, I'd have to blow my brains out.
>>
>>61928727
Yeah, don't get me wrong, I like his vocals on the satanist too, but he sounds like an otherwordly being on the older albums

>>61928639
I like it so far, it's nice to be able to hear the bass
>>
>>61928784

A lot of death metal I try listening to is either too focused on being br00tal to the point that there is no melody OR too focused on technicality and playing as many random notes as possible. The only modern death metal band I enjoy listening to is Immolation.

H-help?

>>
>>61929025
Oh yeah I forgot to mention I like Behemoth and Be'Lakor. I have tried a lot of melodic death metal but it typically sounds like watered down death metal. I will try In Vain and Ne Obliviscaris. If I had a consistent way of finding new bands that would help.

It's not derivitive if they were the OG behind all of the deathcore riffing, yes I know they were influenced by at the gates at the start, but nocturnal was another blueprint album riff-wise, only this time for deathcore, even though they aren't core themselves

>>61929711
no way, there were tons of bands doing the deathcore thing before nocturnal... TTEOTD, with blood comes cleansing, with faith or flames

I like them.

Got to see them back in 2001 when they came to town, one of their last shows together as a band with Slayer, Morbid Angel, Static X and some shitter band called Scrape on the Reinventing the Steel tour.

Years later I found online some guy in Canada of all places had the bootleg of the Pantera and Slayer sets of the show I was at, the audio isn't that great but I can hear myself yelling in a few parts.
