hey guys, do you put your drums in mono? there was a retard in the other thread arguing that all drums should be in mono, baka desu
>>61889572
Kick, Snare, sometimes LT if it's really low like a 909.
>>61889572
no, in the other thread there was a guy who linked a very useful video
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf2NGI7TFmM
which details, from the horses mouth, why drums should be in mono.
what was being discussed is an integral part of a mono/stereo mix
>>61889572
cymbals and hats mono, snare left, kick right both at 98-99%, depends on mix, but never go 100% and dont mix these two up, snare is always left desu
>>61889643
yeah, I'm that guy, those whole series and "into the lairs" with Dave are just priceless if you're into that stuff, and in my opinion, making your music sound good / listenable is the key to reach the audience nowadays.

what genre do you produce?
>>61890213
Why? I have an AKAI LPK25 and I love it, it's always with me when I travel
>>61890107
I listen to a wide variety of music. Drum and bass, hiphop, grime, poppunk, metal, screamo, emo, classical, dubstep and the way sound interacts is the same from one form to another.
The tools and tricks involved in making nigger music are easily transferable to improve the product of other genres, considering everything is an application of theory.
Can some mod just ban him or something for off topic posts?

yeah i work very fast and have no real issues with just working on a tune for 24-48hrs and then start from a blank slate again, i get that it leaves things sounding empty and unfinished but it also allows me to work with more programs, styles, genres which i truly feel is very powerfully accelerating my learning curve.

>>61892779
my stuff is fucking brilliant kmt
>>61892770
i think its quite evident that i work in 16 bar loops and then work backwards when constructing the formation of the song because the songs tend to be quite repetitive and samey, lacking deviation from the main 16.
vote trump to highlight the need for reform in the american politics system
>>61892807
will do thanks
How do you judge a sound you're trying to go for? Do you play a single note? Scale? A short melody?
>>61892829
the kicks are not knocking. what you can do is, split the bass (one channel >100 hz, the other <100 hz) and sidechain the <100hz to the kick, so you don't get the fully "ducking" effect like in EDM but your kick is still audible, it's actually a quite cool technique, if I'm not clear enough maybe this one can help you (it's about the 808 but who cares) https://www.gearslutz.com/board/rap-hip-hop-engineering-production/1051933-splitting-your-808-a.html
It's also what is mentioned somewhere here in the episode (don't remember exactly when)

>>61892929

Noice. I liked the combo organ the most, gonna pick it up eventually to replace my current combo organ.
I really liked the CP as well, but I'd feel like it isn't that worth it for me, considering I have a CP-70 and that's the most unique thing about it.
>>61891734
>but personally i advocate using samples (or bouncing your midi to audio) because its also easier to warp the sound to whats in your head.
Care to develop a bit on that? I always keep every instances of the synths I use. I mean - for everything thats not drums, if the sound isn't what you want from the get go, how do you warp it afterward to match what's in your head?
>>61893895
chopping, compiling, reversing, tempo changing and other forms of resampling.

>>61893811
np mane, i recommend the channel in general, its updated every week, and there is really great advices in "into the lairs" + interviews with top mixing engineers / producers.
>>61893895
honestly I don't believe its easier, if it's a vst then you just try to match to whatever is in your hear through that VST not through editing an already comped waveform (that's my opinion).
>>61894059

>>61894082
Right forgot about that, ios version also got an update.
hey, i'd like to share a great example of what I meant before with the "sidechaining" - here it is explained by an actual pro:
https://youtu.be/Dtj7He1KdKM?t=1547
Anyone mandem for mac cracked albeton 9.5
I just got a download from Kickass and updated my ableton, but it doesnt have the new synths or the 'Link' option, whats up with THAT
>>61895820
link is coming in 9.6 update
it sucks for people who crack they just get 9.5 and then they have to wait for 9.6 for link
i just ended up buying the software eventually after v8
>>61895820
also for the new synths they are in a pack called max4live essentials
imo they are not that good really
https://clyp.it/qvagicyl
I've been working on a remix/remake/thing of #1 by Animal Collective. What does /prod/ think?
so can i buy a midi keyboard for like 100 dollars or is everything just SHIT
>>61896715
Yeah the korg microkey is perfectly usable, the 37 key model is nice and doesn't take up much space
You might want to buy a longer USB cable for it though unless you have a USB hub on your desk
>>61896779
woah looks good. and its only 88 dollars. looks simple enough for a retard like me and really effective. thanks
>>61896908
They aren't quite full sized keys and they're not weighted or anything like a real piano. But it's nice once you get used to it
>>61896329
When I first played it I was gonna say that sounds like that one abco song then I read th title lol
Pretty cool although the vocals don't really have the same style
https://clyp.it/s5lie0zb
Here's some random ass chill shit with me fucking around on bass. The bass is clipping because I recorded it with the gain structure fucked, but for now, I'm too lazy to pull everything out and rerecord it. Thoughts?
Any good semi or weighted midi keyboards under $100 with more than 25 keys?
I can't do anything on two octaves, and I hate mini keys.
>>61897328
I'm in the market for this as well. Also, PSA: stay away from Alesis v25 because the keys are super stiff.
>>61897322

rest is p good senpai
>>61897328
no
>>61896715
I wouldn't spend over 130, anything beyond that you are just paying for crappy features on an already cheap keybed.
full blown hardware synthesizer tend to have better keybeds than midi controllers because it makes sense for manufactures to spend more money on the keybeds in them...it adds greater value to the already large pricetag. So you might want to consider buying an older used synth to use as a midi controller. That will also give you an additional sound source.
>>61897394
Yeah I can see that. The intro is kinda placeholder for now. <3

snare could be mono or panned a little right or left
all toms but floor tom could be panned left to right or right to left
floor tom could be panned a little right or left
cymbals and misc should be panned far right or far left to leave middle space for main drums
hi hat should be panned slightly left or right or mono
Also if you're working with live drums that have overhead mics you would want to pan them hard left and hard right
Drum mixing varies a lot depending on the genre and style and how much you want the drums to be the main focus

here's a good document that's pretty short and explains 1st-5th species counter point. Really good stuff in here.

Mixing down for mono helps with AM radio play and also when listening to on a phone's speaker
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46w99bZ3W_M
so what do you guys think about this
Is the 2020 good for recording guitar and vocals and random stuff like tanboruine, eggs, claps and snaps?
I've heard that a lot of YouTubers use it, so I'm guessing it's good for voice.
Also, is there a difference in sound quality between the XLR version and the USB version?
My external sound card has XLR.
Also, how does it handle noises like computer fans? I know how to remove voise from audio.
any good videos about mono cadences?

All you need to know
is sampling from youtube a bad idea?
>>61897575
you realise that says -1 ye?
>>61897853
imo yes because it is lower quality
>>61897888
>lowering the master track volume

I really liked this
>>61897976
you linking to viruses again, bro?
>>61897927
i'm not that guy but what about if you want to sample voices from interviews?
>>61897853
>>61898069
It's still bad, it's all bad, but really the only people who will be able to tell will be audiophiles, don't sweat it too much
>>61897930
i saw some people in the know doing it to allow for more headroom in their mix
>>61898069
It's fine to sample YouTube, only the end product matters
>>61898121
I don't know what I'm doing, but that doesn't seem like it makes sense.
>>61898069
interviews are fine low quality imo
https://clyp.it/u2nixqxp
How does this sound?
>>61898069
Depends
You could mix it so it's mostly mids and it could sound cool if done right
https://clyp.it/vhz1fsac
feedback please?
>>61898069
sampling voices from youtube is ok probably
i was assuming you meant shit like kick drums or other one shots
if it is bad sounding alone you can probably fix it up so its unnoticable with speech samples by layering like a pad or something like eq and other processing
https://clyp.it/be0fw033
How is the drum mixing on this, or just generally the mixing
>>61898154
it would effect the rendered audio file im pretty sure? especially if you're making noises for other songs or resampling? to a certain extent quieter is "always better" because you will never have to take away from the noise. i cant really justify why its done but i was told to do it lol
>>61897853
youtube is a great source for samples! often just go on a video binge looking for a snippet to sample and find myself down a rabbithole of jazz and funk!
i want to spit some bars over this beat im making but everytime i record my shit (i have a Yeti Blue; i dont really know how good it is relatively) it sounds bad.
is it gunna be the reverb of the room im in? could anyone drop any hints on cleaning up rap vocals?

>>61898437
moonman? is that you?
>>61898290
what do you think you're doing?
>>61898437
LOL
omg that is fucking hilarious 10/10
it took me far too long to clock what was being said, sounds good except the piano sounds a little off to me
>>61898479
everything is way too loud except the drums which are way too quiet. the bleep blooping is dominating heavily the whole mix
>>61898437
it's always a great time to walk in front of a bus
>>61898290
like it shouldn't be hard panned. the sample is pretty grating too. what even is it?
I'm jealous of people who can write music using only virtual instruments and synths. I'm not ashamed of sampling as much as I do, but I really envy people who can write every chord progression and melody in their tracks (edm guys, hip hop trap producers, pop producers in general)
I know, I know, I'm a pleb with shit taste.
>>61898843
learn music theory senpai
>>61898843
this came out recently for people who can't play chords, but it made a bunch of people lose their shit last time i brought it up
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CGHNJpHndE
What do you guys think?
https://clyp.it/22zksge3
>>61898908
I don't know if I am understanding this equipment right, but you'd still need to know how to make a chord progression, and honestly just pressing a single button instead of just playing the right scale degrees for each chord doesn't help you make better sounding music.
>>61898154
If a DAW is using floating-point calculations throughout when summing channels to the mix output there's less need to consider overdriving the mix bus - so you can keep your channel faders higher and pull down the master fader instead to allow for transients.
This is counter-intuitive if you think of analogue summing, where having all of your channels peaking at 0db would soon drive the mix bus into distortion before the signal even reaches the master faders.
The advantage of using this technique in the digital domain (where your DAW and plugins allow) is - as mentioned - headroom at the master section, but also it allows for easier metering on each channel, since the meters will be deflecting more and small level changes are more easily noticeable.
>>61898908
the 2.0 update for Maschine also has built-in chords and harmonies and stuff, I'm still on 1.8 but that would make things so much easier, even though I kind of think it's cheating.
>>61898991
>I kind of think it's cheating
is using your oven instead of building a fire "cheating"?
>>61899038
That's not a good analogy
>>61899237
it is a great analogy desu
>>61898991
cubase lets you draw chords in piano roll and it has a chord assistant with interactive circle of fiths its great for inspiration if you get stuck imo
https://clyp.it/b3gonayx
is this worth finishing?
Last thread some anon posted a new modular environment in Pure Data.
Now, we have a hardware synth that runs Pure Data.

this looks cool and sound decent but im a poorfag so i wont buy it
i really like the wooden buttons though

>>61899680
Pure Data is free though; and they have the patches that it ships with on the website. You might need to change the code around to get it all to work though.
>>61899680
I'm willing to bet that is some sort of Raspberry Pi implementation, so you could quite easily build your own and buy buttons from etsy.
>>61899734
i use max :^)
>>61899560
i think abletons "Scale" midi effect will tell you when you're playing in and out of scale, although i dont use it and dont really know how...
>>61899622
i think the intro is absolutely whack desu
the first bass to come in is very conflicting with the drums imo, the drums themselves sound pretty nice although too quiet, also the hat is quite piercing; i would suggest cutting a little more of the highs from them.
the lfo'd instance of the bassline that comes into the second "verse" sounded much better, the first bassline was very static and boring imo
the arp synthy noise in the final few bars sounded nice.
desu the general vibe of the song is just not for my taste
https://clyp.it/521e34mz
could i get some feedback on this beat ive been working on the past few hours?
>>61899875
what scale does is it forces any note you play in midi to conform to the scale you have chosen and you pick the root note with that knob but i dont really use it that much
i prefer to just write the scale in piano roll i want to use and fold it because it just works
>>61899875
sounds good. a little bit barren, i was waiting for some kick ass high hats to start playing
>>61899934
oh i see! thats pretty fucking useful, but i couldnt see myself getting used to it because i love googling keys and scales and building my own understanding of what sounds good!
>>61899956
yeah totally missing some cymbals but i have a massive habit of overfilling my tracks so that they just cant be used as instrumentals to spit over and i end up having to strip my tracks back so they dont conflict with my voice.
>>61898908
>>61898843
>what is cthulhu
>>61899782
you might not be wrong
>>61900090
ableton also has a chord midi efect but i hate it the scale effect is way better i think
frustrated with my shittiness tbqh
https://clyp.it/4hg0qxyg
>>61900091
I have cthulhu, still think the chordbot is cool. It seems more flexible/faster. Plus cthulhu doesn't have the thing to open up the chord or scroll through inversion
>>61900103
Good to see that. It was the plain-looking project box that made me suspect it - that with the etsy buttons, little screen and extension cables you'd still easily be under 100 bucks for the whole thing.
Why is it that all DAWs are garbage and don't support microtonal piano rolls?
>>61900697
why does it bother you so much to post it 2 times in a row
What's the best Phaser VST out there?
>>61900744
i only use stock plugins i only have a few 3rd party effect plugins i got free like soundtoys and i think those are good quality but i havent tried their phaser
>>61900091
If I were to use cthulu or that chordbot thing, I wouldn't really be writing the music myself .. that's like putting a puzzle together and saying you drew a picture
>>61900744
Audio Damage Phase Two is nice, but the Kjaerhus Audio Classic Series is free - it's a collection of plugins and you get a nice thru-zero flanger with it too:
http://www.freemusiciansresource.com/VST-detail/kjaerhus-audio-classic-series-fx-vst-bundle/
>>61900815
i dont really think its the same
iive never used those products but if youre picking the chord progression whats the different than drawing the chords in and making the same progression
>>61900815
Yiu still need to know which chords to play next and imo that's easier to do note by note
>>61900896
The argument kinda reminds me of the manual beat-matching vs sync argument that DJs waste their lives doing - with the auto chord thing some people enjoy playing the chords themselves and some only care about what comes out of the speakers, neither argument is more valid because both arguments are differently-motivated.
>>61900985
i dont really think it matters really who cares as long as it doesnt suck
>>61901016
Totally agree.
>>61892976
How is the TR-8
Been enjoying the System 1 myself for a while now and been considering copping some more of the Aira system gear.
tfw one of your track's mix sounds way better than the other tracks from the same time frame
>>61889107

added hats to my shit and now it sounds badboi
https://clyp.it/e2ln12hq
needs a sample clip, some vocal stab or something - any ideas ?
favorite pitch shifting plugin?
>>61901104
It's great, fun to use anf sounds really nice. although the lights are too bright and the color scheme is pretty whatever but you can change both those things in the settings apparently
>>61899560
>>61898991
You could also just learn them yourself it takes like a day at most
