>>
>>61776631

Akercocke are pretty much their own stuff man.
If anything, they sound like a more brutal Opeth, but that's about it.
They have nothing in common with Mithras or Chasm. Axis of perdition is also much more of an experiment, Akercocke doesn't take near as much freedom with their songs - which is a good thing in my opinion, satanic black metal tends to be pretentious bullshit with edgy effects

>>
>>61776572
What the hell? Akercocke are pretty damn well known though. They even have a song on YouTube with over a million views IIRC. Not my kinda thing though they kinda weak on the intensity side of things for like 80% of the time. When I had first heard of the band I was expecting a better more tasteful split between the varying things they do. Instead it's boring goth sounding shit for the most of it with the occasional parts that are watered down version of some Anaal nathrak or Axis Of Perdition shit. Axis Of Perdition maintains a truly scary and fucked up atmosphere all the time. Akercocke...idk it lacks the intensity and darkness truly required of such music to be satanic. Their sexual parts aren't even that great either they are like a weaker version of demo era Cradle Of Filth.

>>61777060
It's the subtlety in akercocke that makes it truly scary for me, axis of perdition does nothing for me
>>
>>61777111
See, even then I fucks with Axis cuz when it ain't crazy blasts it's subtle creepy atmospheric noises. Akercocke instead decides to use the same old synth string shit.
>>
>>61777111

>>
>>61777060

Although I understand your point , i agree with >>61777111
comparing AOP and Akercocke is like comparing a jumpscare to an atmospheric horror, even though I like AOP I think they try too hard to be creepy and sacrifice a lot of their music to all the white noise they put forward.
they just throw scary shit at you. Akercocke never actually stops the music and is just much more tense in general , like a moving curtain you wouldn't dare to lift
Now if you don't like their music, it's a whole other thing, of course. Tastes aren't discussable :(

Have you given AOP a full listen? They have a wide variety of atmospheric noises that go on often when there's no blasts from the guitars or drums.

Like you can't even call Akercocke atmospheric horror cuz synth strings (the main synthy sound they use) is overused as fuck in everything and honestly sounds cheesy as fuck. I prefer variety in my atmospheric sounds that AOP brings, not the same shit that Akercocke does.

But then personal tastes like you said aren't something you can discuss. Shit I fucks with Selena Gomez' Same Old Love, and honestly I can't even explain why I like it (maybe cuz the local gym plays it so much but idk.)

So...you prefer jump scares then? Akercocke does jack shit for minutes into a song and then BOO! AOP's sounds tell you that okay, you're in this place, but something doesn't feel right. You are going through this place and nothing bad has happened so far, but even then there's just this feeling about this place that gives you the creeps. Then the initial riffing happens due to initial encounters. Shit's going awry now. As things start to get weirder and weirder, the riffs themselves become more and more twisted. Soon you notice your surroundings and realize that you're still in the same place, but it now looks very different and disturbing. It's as if you are in completely different place but you know you're still in the very same place you started. The horror here's consistent like a good horror movie or game that doesn't just wait for the scary monster to make things bad.

Akercocke instead will have boring riffs and synths for a large part of the song. What do they set up? With the more conventional take on metal riffs and typical synths it seems dark like your typical 90s vampire goth shit, ultimately unthreatening. Then after a few minutes of plodding like that things get BAD! out of nowhere. There's possibly build up to this BAD! in the first few minutes of a song, but it's more conveyed through lyrics than music which again, plays it very safe with conventional metal riffing and conventional stringy background synths.

Point being that the only way AOP is all up in your face is that there's a more constant feel of horror as opposed to Akercocke where the horror doesn't come in musically until the later parts of songs (sometimes earlier I think, too.)

>>61777613
Good album. But not even that evil though. I prefer actual war metal for the soundtrack to warfare against everything good.

Yup that makes a lot more sense.

>>61777822
You sound like you're new to more extreme forms of metal or at least ones that don't have a more generic form of production. It's a more raw form of production done that way for increasing the intensity but is overall less percussive.
>>
>>61777917

I respectfully disagree with what you've just said and I don't think anything I could say would make you change your mind on the subject.
>>

I love both Altars and Covenant but I can never really compare the two though. They literally sound like two albums from completely different bands.

Covenant does have the best production however, but god damn the lyrics can be pretty bad

That's my point. By today's standards and considering Altars came about at the beginning of death metal (and before digital recording), a complaint about the production isn't an argument.

Inhume are the right way to go with goregrind. Squash Bowels are great too.

I invested a lot of time into that genre and it's generally a cesspool of half-assed garbage.

If people are looking for Immortal, this album is gonna disappoint the fuck out of them. If people are looking for a fun metal album with nice riffs they'll dig it. The music has a lot less tremolo picking and blast beats that one expects from Immortal, but that doesn't make it bad though.

I can't get into these guys at all. It's because of the high vocals but they still interest me.

Black metal, disregarding the easy to listen aspect of Traditional Metal, probably the most popular Metal subgenre among music lovers cuz there's always something for everyone in it. Being the black sheep of metal, it more easily interacts with non-metal genres, too. Also of all the other genres it's the only one outside certain doom bands that can be lacking on the riffs side and still be really good.

Hvis Lyset Tar Oss - Burzum
At the Heart of Winter - Immortal
Profanatitas de Domonatia - Profanatica

Don't thank that guy >>61778690

If you've never listened to metal before, I suggest starting with these albums :

>Mastodon - Blood Mountain
>Death - Symbolic
>Opeth - Ghost Reveries

These are gateway bands that can lead you up to a lot of different things and are fairly easy to listen to if you actually dig metal.

Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane. The easiest to listen to black metal album of all time, great production, melodic style of black metal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUufAppKzwQ

Immortal - At the Heart of Winter. More traditional than Dissection, still not pure unadulterated BM. That will come later
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeOlPQqJR-o

My third rec would be what >>61778706 posted, that is essential entry into black metal listening.
Another good rec then would be Dark Fortress - Tales from Eternal Dusk. Not talked about much here, but I believe it is a great black metal classic that is relatively easy listening.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmxPpHeJZAM

After you listen to these if you are still interested in the genre, you can get into the more raw sounds

Well, black metal is pretty versatile as I said in that post you replied to so 3's gonna be tough.

First Wave Black Metal: Bathory - Blood Fire Death

Second Wave Black Metal: Burzum - Hvis Lysett Tar Oss

Something different: Ved Buens Ende - Written In Waters

The first one has a few guitar parts that are clean and sound like they belong in folk music along with the badass riffing typical of metal. The second one from the popular Norweigan second wave has a lot of similarities to ambient music even having background synths and does a minimal atmospheric approach to it. The third one has very a very interesting jazzy feel to it that mixes very well with the more chaotic side of metal.

Impaled!

>Not quite sure what got me into them but their live show with roughly 150 people packed into a tiny venue called the Creepy Crawl made a fan for life. Mostly because the bassist set the head of the bass on fire and was spitting fuel into all over the ceiling so much that the front 2 rows had to jump in the mosh pit or take the heat. Then the guys moshed with us while Vader played. Not that anyone cares.

it's awesome. you guys are just looking for modern bm cliches too much. he's pretty old now and i think you can hear that in the music, but in a good way. pretty much all black metal these days is focused on dissonance or atmosphere. this album is waaayy more rooted in traditional rock and roll than most other modern bm you'll hear. it sounds like it could be a first-wave bm album. I really appreciate it as a change of pace. it's kind of like an old bm veteran showing all the new kids how it's supposed to be done. the riffing is totally classic, and it had me head-banging practically the whole time.
