Pick material makes a very noticeable difference. Try it yourself or look up some videos about. Also picks with the same material and thickness but a different tip shape/edge will sound different
>>
>>61748561
Haven't you ever used a metal pick? It will definitely produce a different sound.
>>
>>61748580
Might see how much a proper custom one of those are, I need a new 7 and I want it to be nicer than the Schecter I have.
>>
>>61748561
Grad a coin, a regular pick and a wooden pick. They all affect the sound differently.
>>
>>61748697
>>61748711

I have quite a few different picks, i.e Gravity, V-Picks, a few metal ones among others, and yeah some felt nice, but I just find myself keep going back to either the Dunlop Nylons or Tortex

Been learning guitar for a few months. I'm currently following justinguitar's intermediate method. I'm trying to learn e shape barre chords (minor and 7), but goddamn my wrist hurts after a 10 minute workout. I'm also practicing playing major scale with a metronome but that adds up to the pain, too. Is this expected or am I doing something wrong? I don't think I have an unconventional hand position from what I've seen from the videos.
>>
I can't deal with this >>61748842
>>
reposting from previous one:
so what's a nice fuzz pedal without that chiptune-sounding octave stuff? just need some dirty, imploding, suffocating sound
just wound Red Witch Fuzz God II and it sounds neat, anyone know anything about that one?
>>
>>61748997
you playing acoustic? if so pain is pretty normal but shouldn't be ignored. Wrist pain is especially important to deal with. Try playing in classical position for a while. keep your elbow in. You want as little bend to the wrist as possible.
>>
Has anyone else been through the process of recording an album and having to deal with bandmates' bruised egos along the way?

I had to track the rhythm guitarist's parts since he's not as clean as he needs to be, and he's throwing a huge fit about it. The same thing happened with the bass player, but I only had to do a couple of his parts. I knew these guys were a little sloppy and we might run into issues with it, but I had no idea they would be this volatile in the studio
>>
>>61748997
It's pretty normal man, just don't over do it and keep it up, it will get easier.

If you are experiencing a lot of pain often, you could try playing with lighter strings.
>>
>>61749082
Tell them that if they want to record an album they have to get over themselves and act like professionals while making it; what's the point in making an album if you don't want to make it the best you possibly can? Make it clear that you just want them to improve not only for the band but for their own sakes as well that it could help them zoom in on what's holding themselves back and what they could improve to be better musicians.
>>
>>61749047
>>61749091
I'm playing electric. I think I over do it sometimes, but generally barre chord practice hurts my wrist even for a short while. At first, I realized my thumb was way left behind the neck, but I think I fixed that. I might try the classical position and also I'll buy a lighter string next time, thanks fellas.
>>
>>61749033

>>
>>61748997
I had this problem recently too. I used to touch the back of the neck with my thumb only. Obviously my wrist was quite bent most of the time.

What eliminated the pain for me was holding my neck a bit like one would hold a baseball bat, by wrapping my thumb around it so that it rests on the side of the neck near the lower E string. Doing so helps to keep the wrist in a more straight and natural position and enables your forearm muscles to assist in generating enough pressure for barre chords.

By resting your whole palm on the backside of the neck instead of just the tip of your thumb, all of your fingers will also have a much stronger and stabler base for most chords and riffs.
>>
>>61749405
But I like sleep and hate coffee...
>>
>>61749033
Dunno if it's the tone that you're looking for, but I've got a Dunlop Mini Hendrix Fuzz and that thing fucking slays
>>

>By resting your whole palm...

Not actually the whole palm though, but most of the thumb-side area.
>>
>>61749082
yes. if it some little mistakes then you are being a dick, if it is totally wrong notes or dispassionate performance, then decide to fire them. fire them by quitting and regrouping with members that are good/actually care. get a new band name.

Just make sure to practice every day. Even if it's as little as five to ten minutes it's better than not practicing everyday. And the good thing is that no matter how busy your schedule is, you can always find the time for those ten minutes.

Whether you practice scales, rhythm, new songs or whatever does not matter as long as you're 100% focused on the guitar for those few minutes.
>>
>>61749441
I tried what you said but I don't think I quite get it. The way I tried it, it didn't feel natural. Maybe a pic would help?
>>
>>61749682
Something like this. You probably have to play around with the position a tad to find a variation that is comfortable for the individual physique of your hand.

good soldering. I wasn't expecting mini pots. I might as well do the no load mod while I'm at it. gonna test the grounding, I'm beginning to think it was my imagination, everything looks good. I don't really feel like doing cavity grounding, is it worth it?

Not memeing. By pinch a chord I mean pluck all the strings fingerstyle so the are played at exactly the same time. Strumming is just a really fast arpeggio, so if the order of the notes is what's sounding off to me playing it like this might sound better.

i don't really care for the sound most of the time but i especially don't like the way acoustic guitars play, and they're not designed for a lot of more advanced guitar techniques, they're limiting

still can't believe that i played acoustic almost exclusively for two years when i first learned
>>
>>61750488
are you stupid? acoustic guitars have so much more advanced guitar techniques such as fingerstyle in and of itself flamnco rumba acoustic is nowhere near limiting if anything electrics limit a lot of sounds you can make such as since most electrics are not hollow you can't get a good beat out of them such as using your fingers to tab and using the palm of your hand on the upper bit of the guitar to make a kick drum sound so much more things you can do on acoustic than you think
>>
>>61750488
I have an acoustic and a classic that sit unplayed at their stands. I very much prefer to play electric.
However, having an electric guitar with a piezo has made me appreciate the sound and enjoy playing acoustic songs in it.
>>

>>61750627

>>
>>61750560
You can still use fingerstyle on an electric.
The only way acoustics can limit you is when you're playing cheaper ones with bad action or really limited fret access.
The only thing they truly lack against electrical guitars is modulation, and tremolo. Though there's probably someone who built an acoustic with a bigsby on it.
>>
>>61750685
cheap trash acoustics are no good plus i think you could still use peddles with some sort of acoustic electric
>>
>>61750765
Yeah, as long as it has a pickup. Damien Rice used to use pedals with his acoustic.

That'd be interesting if they are Yamaha pickups. The bass is an sx. I think the covers are glued on to the old pickups but I might try cutting them off. The new pickups are slightly different in size and it would save me from ugly gaps and sanding the pickguard.

Not gonna bother rotating this one but as you can see the gap is not that noticeable.

in the world of cheap made in china guitars, brand barely matters anyway.

So I'm mostly a funk and jazz bassist (Jaco, Marcus Miller, Pattitucci and so on) and I want to get into metal. Is there an efficient way to master the three-finger technique? Some sort of exercises other than just playing continuously with three fingers? I've been practicing for a while but I feel like I have nowhere near the speed I have with two fingers. How did you metal bassists learn how to do it?
>>
>>61751659
Not unless it has scratches and wear from being older. In the case of Larrivee they're solid wood, very well made, and their wood comes from the best places you can get wood for an acoustic. Their factory location is in a good place too(more important than most people think).

https://reverb.com/marketplace?query=larrivee+lv05

They all sell for much higher than $800

It's feeling. After working at it you will feel the technique go from two motions to one, and you'll be able to...just kind've be able to do them from now on. It's hard to describe but no matter how you hold a pick, with a bit of practice just digging your thumb in a little will get you a pinch harmonic.

What pattern are you using/comfortable with? Have you tried a different pattern? Personally I'm comfortable with ring-middle-index-middle-repeat, but there are any number of combinations you might find work better.
But in general, speed is ironically the slowest thing to come to most players. To keep your playing clean, start slow and progressively get faster, which is really the basic concept for anything. It'll take time for your muscles to break in and get comfortable with moving extremely fast like that.

I only use a 4 finger pattern because it keeps me in time better. 4 finger pattern for a 4/4 rhythm lets me focus more on what I'm playing.
I would suggest to just experiment with different patterns to find what works best for you. Just make sure to dedicate some time to speed training every time you practice.
Make sure to practice string transitions and skipping with 3 finger technique too, otherwise you'll only be able to chug one string.

Break the pinch harmonic down into two steps. It's just picking then the closest part of your thumb touches the string as lightly as possible. Try picking then just touching the string with a finger tip afterwards instead just to find the best picking hand position to bring them out. Position up and down the string matters a lot here. Remember super soft thumb touch, lots of gain, lots of vibrato.
>>
>>61752435
That's actually what I was worried about. Can I still get a clean and nice sound using a three finger pattern? Sometimes I lose track of the first beat and it gets a little messy but I guess it's because I just started playing with three fingers.
Yeah I'll be sure to do that. Thanks for your advice.

>>
>>61752524
Yeah, consistent sound from finger to finger is also something to take into account. If you're worried about getting even sounds from every finger, just play in a way that's both comfortable for you and plays cleanly. It's a little hard to be specific here, mostly because everyone plays differently and has their own definition of what's comfortable. The best I can give you is, again, start really slow, get it perfect, then go faster. I'm sure I don't have to tell you, but using a metronome is a must.

I got my avatar 2x12 cabinet Wednesday. Should've on Tuesday, but Fedex delayed due to weather.

This thing is beautiful. I have a cannabis rex in the top left and private jack in the bottom right. I have the cabinet set to be open, it's convertible. Huge bass to it. It was very bright with the Private jack on top, so I switched it to the bottom.
The only problem was the back of the cabinet is such a perfect fit, it's nearly impossible to remove. It must've scraped the tolex off of the corner edges when they pounded the back panel in, and when I had to pull it back out to install my speakers, but these are impossible to see thankfully.

>>61751779
the suggestions people have posted are correct. start with a hard pick attack, then a light thumb graze on the string. slowly turn those two motions into one. just practice the harmonics by themselves for a bit, outside of riffs, just to get the technique down. position on the strings matters too, as someone else said, closer to the bridge makes for higher harmonics. they're also harder to do the closer to the bridge you get, and harder the higher the note/string is in frequency. just keep experimenting with it, just takes practice
also, they work fine on the neck pickup

>>61752763

>>61755930
what do you already know about music theory? also, what's the genre of music you're going for? i don't know a ton, but i might be able to help.
solos are a mix of scales and arpeggios, with flair thrown in that changes depending on (but is not limited to) what genre you're doing (legato for blues, pinch harmonics for metal/rock, big arpeggios and taps for metal/classical/jazz/etc) there's a lot more to it than just this, but hopefully i can help your learning process

>>61755407
gothicbro represent, i played with some guys earlier this week that were complaining about lack of inlays and "it's hard to follow, there's so much gain on your guitar"

he was playing pic related
>>
>>61756740
What does that even mean
>>
>>61756780

I know about scales and modes and keys and intervals and chords etc

I just want to make fast, bluesy minor penatonic solos with lots of fast hammer ons and pull offs, like slash or dave Navarro in their soloing

i can pick out 3 or 4 notes that work and then play them in a fast loop, but I don't know how to mob up and down the frets and build that into a whole solo
>>
>>61756951
It's just practice dude. It takes practice to be able to play scales all over the neck. If you're doing pentatonics then its even easier than regular scales and modes, so get off gg and practice. You have no excuse
>>
Well boys... She growls. Gonna raise the pickups some more soon for the real growl. But yeah this bass is a mean machine that makes me want to dig in on every note and get a lot better at using a pick. I think I will have this bass for the rest of my life. Now to add 2 pickups, 4 switches and 2 knobs. Also the white PG is growing on me, looks really good up close but I think the tort looks better from a distance.
>>
>>61756951
is your knowledge of the scales that you want to use all over the neck (in whatever key) good?

i had the problem that i knew the scales in one position on the neck, but didn't know how to link it all properly together. learning the neck more helped me almost instantly

solos almost always have licks like what you're describing, but when you can slide those licks up and down the neck, it really changes the voicing. sweep type arpeggios might help too, once you get them down they start to sound real slick

sounds like you like hard rock? it's not my chosen genre but it seems like it's mostly pentatonic licks with accents focused on notes that connect the underlying changing chords

hope this helps
>>
>>61756951
Just learn the blues scale and start playing it over backing tracks. That's basically every Led Zep/Sabbath/Cream/White Stripes/Hendrix/Van Halen/etc. solo ever. You'll fill in the gaps around the fretboard the more you play but you need to actually play. It comes together pretty quickly once you get a couple basic scale shapes under your belt and the experience of running over them in a soloing context is pretty much instantly gratifying as a beginning guitarist.
>>
>>61757032

is also right, it just takes a whole lot of practice
run the scales by yourself, sometimes the immense amount of practicing that it takes is daunting. but all the theory in the world doesn't matter if you don't practice

then run the scales by yourself again, and again, then set up some sort of backing track and try to solo over that

Some of my favorite techniques are sweep tapping, double thumb, and three finger tremolo picking
>>

but dude, you could have posted all of those things the first time. you're right, and i agree that practice is at the root of it, but

>the positions of the pentatonic scale all over the neck

>it takes practice

tone matters man. remember, you love guitar, just like I do, just like this guy does. we should be helping each other. the guitar has obviously brought us great joy in our lives, so we should pass that on.

not saying it doesn't take practice, but sometimes a helpful hand/mind can teach you more in 3 hours than 3 months of practicing alone

Is it an Ursa? Also I figured out how your soldering iron works lel. I'm just not used to that kind of soldering irons.

I'm worried about your multi pickup solution generating magnetic interference between each pickup though. If you have some way to try it before routing the body I'd definitely do it if I was you. Otherwise you could be off for a nasty surprise (pickups work because the vibrating string alters the magnetic field, if it's stronger because of magnets outside a given coil maybe those variations could become less apparent).
That said, nice work and enjoy your bass!

Oh I won't dispute that. There is no funk tone superior to that of a Music Man bass. That said, if I was going to get one, it would be a Stingray 5. I'm deeply disgusted by the toilet seat look of Bongos. Stingrays and Sterlings don't look like a toilet seat but they're pretty ugly still. The game changer isn't too bad I guess.
