Secos & Molhados - Secos & Molhados (1973)
>folk pop, progressive pop, art pop, psychedelic folk
Some tracks do kinda sound like a lesser, distinctly Brazillian version of Sparks, but overall this is a nice album. The production is absolutely fantastic here, the bass is crystal clear and the drums pop exquisetly. And the songwriting is good, really fun. Not mind-blowing and some songs don't hit, but overall nice.

Portraits of Past - 01010101 (1995)
>screamo
Nicely noisy and passionate screamo. A bit too twinkly and midwest-y for my screamo tastes, but sometimes it reaches that point of pure noisy Orchid/Jeromes Dream screamo perfection. It doesn't come close to hitting the high points that these artists hit, but its still good stuff.

>avant-garde jazz, free jazz
i've written something for this fucking album like 4 times but i keep getting the goddamn embdedded file error bullshit and for some reason the text didn't copy so all im gonna say is its good stuff but a bit monotonous and the bits with the sax are real nice and break the monotony of the layers of percussion.

>Magik Markers - I Trust My Guitar, Etc.
This album right away made me feel uncomfortable and afraid, which is exactly how I want a no wave album to make me feel.
But this album falls short in how bad the recording quality is. It's not an endearing kind of lo-fi. I Trust My Guitar sounds really muddy, which is overall distracting and unflattering.
The vocals of this album seem like an afterthought. You can barely hear them and they don't really contribute much of anything.
This band has some cool ideas. The guitars are really the highlight of this album. They're terrifying. And it would make for a great live show. But they won't save this album from mediocrity.

Anyone up for participating in a interpretation of a piece of artwork as if it were a score? I've been writing about how people interpret graphic notation that's not traditional as sound, composing on abstract music forms etc. so i'm putting up this kind of project / performance thing to go along with it (as recorded "experiment"), if anyone wants to collaborate and contribute with a recording of it... it'd be great since i need a few more and as of now i only have like three people willingly to do it.

You know the cheesy medieval-ish interludes in black metal with the synths and all? That's an album full of it. It's my guilty pleasure but I can't say this is good. The music is often uninspired, the female vocals are devoid of passion and the male ones are one of the most stupid thing I've ever heard.

Alright it's been a while since I updated. Still deciding on my rating for De Staat and Morald and Dogma, but here's four things I did decide on.
>Akiko Yano - Japanese Girl
Can't get enough of that jazzy pop found on the opening track. Great track progression with seductive singing, very swingy piano playing, just excellent. What comes after on this album doesn't meet the very high standards set by the first track, but it's all good in its own right. In fact, whereas the first track sees Yano playing with western jazz influences, most of the album is more occupied by pop set to a traditional japanese background. Yano often flirts with traditional japanese elements and singing techniques, but never loses her pop sensibility. It's really entertaining and diverse, with only some tracks being slightly generic pop for its time. Even those tracks, however, are saved at least to a degree by Yano's interesting vocals. 7.5/10
>Mgla - Exercises in Futility
Well-executed black metal, no bullshit. My main complaint is that as a result, it doesn't feel like there's a lot to make it special, so I'm not sure how often I will return to this in the future. Keeping it at a 7/10 for now, if I keep going back to it I'll rise it a little.
>Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime
These are some cool tunes, but I don't think I have enough ADHD to love this. With some types and derivatives of punk you can create a fine album with songs of this length because the songs have a very similar feel and structure, but over here we have a lot of diversity. Diversity's cool, but also means that because there's so many different songs on here, it's hard to really latch onto a certain idea. This only gets amplified by how extremely long this thing is. Make the record half as long and put 15 songs tops on it so you can flesh the ideas out a little more and you've got yourself a winner. Also, History Lesson Part II is easily the most memorable thing on here. 6.5/10
>>61749879
>Laurie Anderson - Big Science
Who needs actual instruments? Honestly, this is the best minimal synth music I have ever heard, and the album's supposedly art pop. Idk if I would really call this "pop", considering there are very few hooks, the vocal style is far from poppy (mostly spoken word stuff going on here), and the melodies are very minimal. I'm not a big fan of the brass added on a couple of tracks, for it juxtaposes with how quiet and minimal this album is in quite an ugly way, but otherwise everything here is very tasteful. Anderson's little stories are very nice and in many cases calming, supplemented by the swirling synths and the ticking, clapping percussion elements. The strings added on "Born, Never Asked", contrary to the brass, fits the music very nicely. The centerpiece "O Superman" is the best thing on here though, consisting almost entirely of a vocal sample put on repeat and Anderson singing over it in an android-esque voice. It's surreal, and the album's surreal, and it's both calming and unnerving. I wouldn't mind Anderson getting rid of the more expressive songs (like "From the Air") and just sticking to her unique brand of sound experimentation, it would turn this very good record into a great one. 7.5/10
My "reviews" seem even more jumbled than usual. Unfortunate.
>O.V. Wright - The Bottom Line
>soul
Not bad, these are some sweet soul songs that you can bang your old lady too. Has great instrumentation and the vocals are just solid, though they caught me off guard on how soft spoken they are. Takes a moment to get use too but hey it works. Also this is jam packed with ballads, perhaps to much, but i can dig it. Perfect for some soulful late night driving, preferably right before getting a bj.
>Maïeutiste - s/t
>black metal
Bleh. Terrible drumming, transition between tracks feel off, instrumentation not really working for me, really average vocals. The project is just too scattered shot and unfocused. Couldn't get my head into this project. The only thing I liked was the album art.

>>61750646
It's actually incredibly good
>Otis G Johnson - Everything - God Is Love 78
>recd by Talking Cat Bob
Honestly I was expecting a meme but this turned out pretty good. It almost feels like 70s christian rap music. Unlike most gospel music, which is usually performed by large groups, Otis decides to go on his journey towards God on his own. The minimal synths and very simple drum machines make for a great atmosphere, and the lo-fi quality makes it all even better. The lyrics are of course about God and shit, didn't really care too much for em. If you like early Daniel Johnston stuff but felt like you wanted a gospel/soul singer instead, give this a try.
>Keiji Haino - Next, Let's Try Changing Shape
>rec by lewdwander
My first Keiji Haino meme, somehow I've avoided listening to her for so long. This probably isn't the best album to be introduced to Haino, but I liked it. I like those droney guitars, her voice is pretty good too. I'm not very good at reviewing drone albums (or albums in general) so I really don't know what else to say. I liked it plenty.
Oh boy a tie, I know how to solve this, whatever my last 2 digits are declares the winner

yuh, will keep shit groovy, and don't worry too much if it doesn't "sound good", it's more an experiment on sound than a proper track you know? it'd be cool and fun at least
idk how we can set this up... First I need to send you the piece of artwork that will work as the score you have to interpret plus some instructions.
Via mail? Tomorrow I'll get on the sync to talk it up anyways so see ya there if I don't get your answers in this thread
gib album for today and need moar for the rest of the month to fill out one rec each plz make it real real good :"^)
Elliott Smith - Live at Largo (2007)
>singer/songwriter, acoustic rock
Cool live versions of the obviously great "Angeles", "Between the Bars", and "Clementine", a Quasi cover, and a Hank Williams Jr. cover. Elliott's original songs are of course great, but none of the performances here expand upon the studio recordings, except "Clementine", which has some really great guitar work. "Clouds", the Quasi cover, is pretty eh, certainly seems out of place following the songs written by Smith. The Hank Williams Jr. cover is oddly enough my favorite song here, all because of the performance. The awkwardly told (and actually really funny) jokes, the laughing, and the mistakes make the performances seem all the more human, something that is kinda missing from Smith's studio recordings and the other performances. Okay little live EP.

The Allman Brother Band- Eat a Peach
Various Artists - The Secret Museum of Mankind, Vol. 1: Ethnic Music Classics 1925-1948 (1995)
>traditional folk music
Mind-expanding collection of Asian and African folk music. Every track here is at least good, but some tracks /really/ outshine the others, and the piercing vocals that are present on a lot of tracks aren't all too appealing to listen to. But barring those two complaints, this is a real good comp.

saw the JACK 4tet. the Zorn they did was quite dull, especially compared to his 90s stuff. but more than made up for by an astonishing Xenakis. they've been playing this stuff (Tetras) for more than a decade now and it shows - the more natural it is for them to play, the more and more alien and otherworldly his music becomes... even better than their famous recording. a quartet from john luther adams was also magical.

>Various Artists - Rumble in the Jungle
I think we can 100% chalk this up to this just not being my type of music. Too dank or something like that.
Reggae is a fine genre but not one I toke the great green meme machine to in general. Jungle is a genre I enjoy well enough. But together I'dunno it didn't really sit well. Great album overall if I were to talk about it on that level, full of energy and bangin' tunes, but it just wasn't for me.
Also some of the synths sounded like farts.
6/10.
