Why do people like this album?
Can anyone tell me why they like it or consider it one of the best of all time?

I constantly see it being ranked in the best of 80s and best of all time list but I have listened to the album maybe 10-15 times and even though I think it's a good album I don't see what other people see.
Are there innovations? Is it the subject matter? The sort of impish humour? Or does everyone relate to Morrisseys sickly loneliness?

I like the album but I would like to know if I'm overlooking something

It's just a really catchy album with great lyrics and great guitar work.

There's no secret behind it.

This

Even though the lyrics can be a bit cringy at times. The production is top tier though.

It's an incredibly poignant, lonely, mournful album with tinges of incredible humour and witticisms.

Cemetry Gates is one of the best songs I've ever heard in my life. The lyrics are Wilde-tier poetic, and rightfully so.

I LOVE this album, i hadnt heard till the other month, ive always skimped around listening to their other work, but this is definitely their best album, i love Morisseys lyrics on it, their incredibly tongue in cheek

yep.

>cringy

shut up.
>>
>tremendous guitar work
>fantastic rhythm section
>god tier lyrics and melodies
>pretty stylistically versatile (ballads, country-ish stompers, baroque pop) while still maintaining the jangle pop sound

Not a lot to it. Just a really fucking well made pop album that more or less defines the Smiths as a band, who in turn defined much of the 80s.
