No it's not lad I've been listening to Skepta and Stormzy from day (ever since I started uni). I know bare grime tunes mate. That's Not Me, Shutdown, German Whip, Shut Up, the list goes on. I can go from Skepta to Stormzy to Lethal Bizzle in a matter of minutes.

Did you see the new post on Unilad? I was having a cheeky Nandos with the lads when I saw it, it was great banter. Afterwards I listened to Stormzy.

I lel'd slightly but then I remember that some people think Functions on the Low is specifically the instrumental for Shut Up and that's sad.

I'd say a lot of Jethro Tull even though they were popular in the US for a time and had some hits here. Even their signature tune (Aqualung) is full of allusions to stuff that Americans wouldn't get.

A lot of the more obscure Beatles tracks (the hits were usually stuff that was more international in appeal).

A lot of 70s prog had too many British cultural allusions to have international appeal. Pink Floyd and Yes were the most popular over here due to toning down that sort of thing.

It's funny cos Judas Priest and Def Leppard had to change their sound to appeal to Americans yet their earlier stuff didn't have much of any British cultural shit in it.
>>
>>61409853
Dunno about them specifically, but if you listened to Bon Scott-era AC/DC outside the singles, their songs had a lot of stuff in them about life in 70s Australia. They were starting to tone that down on Highway To Hell to have more international appeal.

From what I hear, Priest had a hard time finding a US audience when they first started touring here. It was like "Wut? I guess these guys are alright but what's this stuff they're playing? Is it even rock? I mean, where's all the songs about cars and girls?"

They were quite big in the UK during the late 70s, but the US market was the biggest one so they had to simplify into more of an arena rock sound to find success with Americans.
>>
>>61408852
ok whitey
>>
>>61409915
Americans wanted good-time fun stadium rock. Brits wanted whiny political music. That basically sums it up.
>>
>>61409933
pretty much senpai
>>
>>61409950
Judas Priest never had political stuff in their songs, although Rob Halford says he's a libertarian who doesn't trust any politicians.
>>
>>61409961
No but I mean their dark 70s material wasn't what resonated with Americans. Even during the malaise era, we still wanted to have a good time. Americans always have this glass is half full attitude even during the worst times.
>>
>>61409988
The US had economic issues during the Seventies but it was not close to the rubbish we went through back then.

>garbage piling up in the streets because the sanitation workers were on strike for the fourth time that month
>>
>>61410002
Well, kind of but Brits went through this really depressing nihilism for some decades due to the loss of the empire and were kind of searching for a place in the world.
>>
>>61410013
Ah true and I do think we've largely gotten over it by now especially with the younger generation who never lived through the era of decolonialism after the war. I'd say since the Nineties things have been rather chipper for us.
>>
Americans will never understand a cheeky nandos either, pathetic.
>>
Lot of 80s British electronica/pop like Special Beat Service wouldn't resonate with Americans much.
>>
>>61410027
I find it hard to believe Americans wouldn't understand something involving eating.
