Remember that DAWs and Trackers are technically the same thing but work fundamentally different

Remember that your DAW of choice isn't the best DAW evarrr. DAWs have strengths, weaknesses and different workflows

Learn that Image-Line is going to bring back graph editors eventually, and that you should just buy whatever you fucking want to buy though

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP : posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a soundcloud link is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

Remember to check other peoples' clyp.it links to keep the thread health.

help /prod/ I've hit a block

>been learning muh scales/chords
>can easily make a lead
>cannot for the life of me come up with a bassline that "fits" with the lead

I am sure that I am missing/forgetting something really simple. I mean, besides being in the same key, what else should I need to know when making basslines from a lead? Is there a "rule of thumb" ie depending whether the lead is in a major or minor scale? pls halp

Not sure what you're after exactly, but if all else fails, just put your bass on the tonic of the chord, as you probably know.

Another thing that might be relevant is to check out "simple counter melody writing" if you want melodic bass. This is a part of most conservatory applications. Just google it.

If you're going for the theme of shopping for furniture within the Sims, then you've definitely nailed the mood. Overall though, not too bad. It becomes repetitive after 1:50 and losses my attention. But I really like 2:35 and on. You should use that as your breakdown in between choruses.

I wouldn't add anything to it, it sounds fantastic! But it gets boring after awhile and runs itself into the ground. Unless you have it at 5 mins for a reason, I'd cut it down.

QUESTION

I've been making rhythmic/dance-y noise/power electronic stuff, similar I guess to Frozen Niagra Falls. But every time the kick hits it thumps, and not in a good way, and the master is physically painful to listen to. I have no idea what to do to get it to sound "normal".
>>
>>61346227
where is your kick sitting at? You do know how to mix and get "loudness" out of your track right?
>>
>>61346227
Mix and equalize properly. Sidechain if you absolutely need to. Also how did you produce the kick? Did you sample it? From a pack of samples? I always make my own kicks out of my acoustic drums. Just shape and layer many sounds while considering the overall mix. Do you use a soundcard? What type? What daw? Mixer? Need a lot of specs to help. Maybe a screenshot of the kick channel and all effects on it.

How do I learn to rap and not sound like an ignorant honkey?

I am, indeed, an ignorant honkey, but I want to be able to flow. I just started a few days ago and have been practicing every day, but I want to learn little tricks and tips for flowing more smoothly.

So far, I've figured out that I have to add little filler words like "really" and "just" to get a smoother flow.

I'm not trying to be Eminem, but I want people to be able to listen to my stupid lyrics and not projectile vomit.

Learn all manner of poetry terms and techniques (meter, timing, assonance etc.) You will need them to stand out from the unwashed horde of no talent rappers who don't even know english.

be different. dont be afraid to stand out, its actually more important to have some sort of discerning characteristic, because white rappers cant afford to try to front and act hard.

lastly, actually try to battle rap, freestyle and get involved with cyphers, to really test your mettle. if you know how to turn a phrase, you r in business.

even the cheesiest samples can sound cool if they are put through the right effects.

i like to put a short single delay (feedback low so that i only get one or two delays) on and play against the rhythms of the delay.

Use the MIDI out to play whatever you like, then run it through a good virtual instrument. Once you have done this, you will have to do all the articulations manually, to ensure it sounds like the real thing and not MIDI/Casio CT460 cheesy.

Reaper is god-tier, just sayin'.
I use Pro Tools 11 and Reaper, and I have used Ableton, Cubase Studio One and FL Studio before.
Pro Tools is forever behind the times, as well as being the least stable piece of software ever written. I use it mostly for paid projects where I am interfacing to and from PT11/12, so I don't have to fuck around as much.

The things you can do with Reaper... holy shit. That was made by people who know production. It feels like something a producer made for themselves. So much customisability, so many fluid workflow solutions. The price too. I feel like most people should be using it. It should become the industry standard.
>>
>>61359096
you make a compelling case, I'll check it out anon

>>61359096
whenever I ask someone about Reaper they all say the same exact thing
"It has its limitations, but I know (some person) who has been able to make some incredible things" like it's weird how similar everyone's response is.
also I feel like Pro Tools and Logic are a lot better if you have mostly live instrumentation, for everything digital they're not ideal

Wasn't trying to sound like a dick (reading it back, I did).

What are these limitations? The only one I can think of, is not being able to run AAX, but only PT can anyway, so that's a moot point. I don't know of any other limitations at all. I work in a real studio (not my own), and have a good studio setup at home. I haven't found a weakness yet, but I would like to know what they are.
>>
>>61359534
he actually knows what he's doing though. He rents it out to people and is also the only producer, he's been on several world tours as a supporting guitarist, he's not some random guy who just got a cracked FL studio and called himself a musician
>>
>>61359551
nobody ever really specifies, they probably have never used it, they just see the price and think it's a joke
>>
>>61359551

>What are these limitations?

Ableton in general is better at "electronic music" and at laying rough ideas/jamming and playing around with them
Much better/easier automation
Better sample editing/management
Session/Arrangement view is still God like
THE thing to use for live performances

Although I've never used pro tools, from what I understand it's a high end production, tracking, arranging and mastering tool.
I've been using Logic for nearly 20 years now and you've only got to look at the (digital) instruments included to realise that in fact it's very much focuses on digital recording, it's almost like it was designed for making electronic music. (Pic Related)
I'm not sure why people like to express their incorrect knowledge on here, if you've never used something don't go giving people advice on what it's for or what is better than it.

From the little info given, I would have to agree with>>61362448

If you don't have the vst/aax to load, it's not going to have anything to interface with.

I record, mix, master for a living and people still tell me their DAW is better than mine because blah, blah, blah. I've used a tonne of them, and I try not to give any shit, because in the end - if it works for you, who cares?
I use Pro Tools every day, and I think it's the only one I would give any shit to, simply because they aren't as fast to add features and it's as unstable as your parent's relationship.

From what I gather, most people are making electronic (mostly synth) music on here. Their tools are a very small part of a production kit. These guys seem to be the ones giving people shit, just because they learned someone once and now they apply all things to the one thing they learned.

THIS IS FOR EVERYONE: If your DAW works for you, rad. That's great. If someone's works for them, don't give them shit about it.

Is anyone here in need of any production knowledge/assistance?

none taken. I can make $100 / finished minute of music in FL Studio.

Its all about the producer, not the tools.

I was trying to help people out. I suppose no one actually needs help making EDM/house/terrible rap in their bedrooms. They are all masters of their craft. Silly me.

Daily reminder that logic is over 15 years old...and those synths have been there from the start. So congratulations on your "Serum" for catching up

Do you guys read the entire manual of a DAW while getting to grips with it, or just consult it for areas where you weren't sure?

How long after using your DAW did you finally realise you were comfortable with it?
>>
>>61363957
You too? We share the same rate and DAW.

I'm using v10 here, how about you?
>>
>>61365619
I read manuals for DAWs and synths as soon as possible, sometimes before they arrive. It significantly makes my workflow easier when I start them up.

this.

how long until I was comfortable? ~3 years

I tried remaking an old song of the indie era of my fav band by using my own VSTs instead of their original sucky ones. It became pretty lol, but it was first try.

What's the most effective way of making samples sound dusty/airy/generally greyscale in Ableton?
Stuff that sounds like Actress or, dare I say, Macintosh Plus.
Is there a particular effect I'm blanking on here, or is it just tasteful use of EQ, distortion/erosion, compression, tube filtering, etc?

I know I could've just chosen dustier samples, but I'm trying to make the whole thing sound more cohesive
>>
>>61366325
It's mostly EQ and distortion/saturation.
>>
>>61366325
I used to have this tape (or maybe it was vinyl) saturation plugin that had noise, crackling, and warmth parameters. I think it was called like j_Ferox or something, I can't remember. It was pretty good. Try putting it on your master but don't overdo it.
>>
>>61366898
I remember now. It was jb Ferox.

Anybody got some tips on making synthwave-esque drums? I'm having trouble filling out the high end and just making the drums interesting in general. I got the kick and snare to sound great but the pattern is just a kick on 1 and 3 and a snare on 2 and 4 so it's kinda boring.
>>
>>61358748
Not very. What are you using? Just one hit samples?
>>
>>61366914
anything similar that's 64 bit?
>>
>>61367984
Avid Reel Tape Saturation, but it's not free. You might can find a torrent. I don't think any other ones give you a noise/crackle option, they all seem to be just saturation.
>>
>>61367984
Doesn't your DAW have a 32/64 bit plugin bridge?
>>
>>61367984
>>61368036
Wait, I found a company that remade/redesigned the jb Ferox but it's not free either, I don't think.

I'm just getting into production. Currently usingh the KRK Rokit 5, but plan on upgrading either to Rokit 10-3 or Adam A7x.

Any experience with those speakers? The low range extension is really important to me. How do both of these performn in the mid field?
>>

>>
>>61368747
Which speakers are you talking about? Yeah, the RP5 has a tiny woofer. That's why I want to switch. How about not being condescending, but helpful instead?
>>
>>61369032

oh misread your question

2bhwy pham it all comes down to what are you producing and what sound staging do you prefer. any store worth their salt would def let you test them both, and if you buy online you should be able to return

having said that, I have always heard the A7x's are much better that anything Rokit
>>
>>61368686
I wouldn't go with either of those. They're hyped sounding and not really flat. Low end extension isn't really the most important thing anyway. Ported enclosures can produce bass, but the time domain response isn't good; if you're looking at frequency response only, you'll likely end up with something boomy and shitty sounding. And your room very likely has tons of uneven low frequency resonances. Focus on room treatments first. Any monitor with bass extension down to like 40-50 Hz is more than adequate.

>>61368747
>tiny
it's actually quite large
>>
>>61369142
Yeah, room treatment is a good point. The main reason why I am interested in the RP10 is because they can be used as mid range monitors as I've heard, which I imagine is nice for recording with a couple of peole at the same time as opposed to near field, which only works for one person at a time.
>>
>>61369207
I wouldn't worry so much about the nearfield vs. midfield distinction; it's kind of arbitrary and mainly implies that the RP10 doesn't sound that great up close.

There are some example recordings of different monitor setups here: https://www.youtube.com/user/SonicSenseProAudio/videos

Listen with good headphones and compare between what you're thinking of and the more expensive monitors (Genelec 8050 or whatever). I'd been looking at these earlier, I think the best sounding ones are the Yamaha HS8, KRK VXT8 and Presonus Sceptre S8. The Adams really don't sounding that accurate, even the pricey ones. I'd go with the Presonus.

Their selection isn't very comprehensive though; there's other promising stuff in that price range like the Sonodyne SRP800...

Thanks for the fb. I was thinking of adding something like that into the 2nd chorus to tie the song all together.

How do I make it more clear? I've struggled with this for all mine songs and they never come out sounding as good as they possibly can. Do I just need to work on equalization or compression techniques?
