I don't think I've heard a 1000 albums in my life. Although I'm getting there. Library currently stands at 800.
>>
>>61175217
It's a good starting point if you want to listen to music beyond what's coming out now. It's all fairly entry-level though.
>>
So, TVU&Nico has now become horrid according to /mu/.

Time to leave this memehole.

I would read the book BECAUSE of the cover! TVU&N is a GREAT album, and I don't understand the hatred towards it.

>>61175317
Why is it "Horrid"? What's everybody's deal about this album? Geez, with the way everybody pans this album on /mu/ one would think it's 1967 all over again!
>>
>>61175249
literally judging a book by its cover.
>>
With 1001 albums on the list, there's bound to be a lot of good older stuff that you probably haven't heard yet, but would be considered essential.

I would also guess though, that once they get to the 2000s and later, they want you to listen to Coldplay and shit.
>>
>>61175217
Had a flick through, some of the albums in there are really good, some are trash, you just have to work your way through them i guess.

Here's the list. Has some good stuff, some meh stuff.

http://www.listology.com/ccaaaaam/list/1001-albums-you-must-hear-you-die
>>
>>61175217
It's honestly pretty good. It does a great job on showcasing bands/albums that are great but often forgotten, instead of just shoving Le Beatles entire discography in there. The write-ups are pretty interesting too, as they describe the musical landscape at the time, and discuss why the album works, instead of just giving it blind praise (looking at you, Rolling Stone).
>>
>>61175331
Nico you're drunk go home
>>
>>61180893
just listen to these albums OP. If you get half way through this chart you'll still be more musically educated than most of the posters here.

>>
>>61175317
I would love to hear you try to explain how TVU&N, one of the greatest albums of all time, is "horrid".
>>
>>61183576
Why is it great? Influence isn't an indication of quality, so don't bring that up.
>>
>>61183633
so in your mind the fact that the album is perhaps the most influential ever made doesn't mean anything? lol

do you have any idea how many great artists have cited TVU&N as a major influence? ever notice how really good musicians constantly cite bob dylan, the beatles and the velvet underground as major influences? do you think that's by chance? do you think it's just a coincidence that they don't cite kiss, acdc and the eagles instead?
>>
>>61183959
No, it doesn't mean a damn thing about the quality of the music. Bob Dylan's my favorite artist of all time, the fact that he's so influential he may as well have created the modern singer-songwriter genre doesn't have a thing to do with it. The music has to speak for itself.
>>
>>61183988
>VU's music not speaking for itself
lel
>>
>>61184322
You have yet to answer the question. Can't even defend the album you boast about.

That was my first post in the thread, the question wasn't directed towards me in the first place.

And given that I, The Witchfinder hasn't been in any of my posts that should be obvious.
>>
>>61183162
>modern pop
>good
>>
>>61184965
i know you're not him, stupid

the onus is upon you. what you said is comparable to asking "why is michael jordan a great basketball player"? nobody should be expected to answer such an outrageously stupid question. if you don't think that michael jordan is a great basketball player then it's on you to explain why
>>
>>61185244
There's no such thing as a stupid question. The onus is on anyone to defend there view - whether or not they think Michael Jordan is a great basketball is besides the point.

Answer the question.
>>
>>61185325
>There's no such thing as a stupid question.

Jesus Christ, you are fucking retarded. How can there be no such thing as a stupid question. Here's a question:

>Why do people sit down when they're on the toilet to take a shit?

According to your logic that isn't a stupid question.
>>
So, basically what I'm getting from this thread is that Velvet Underground fans blindly defend the band/their most famous album without ever actually explaining why.
>>
>>61185430
He's right imo because you can easily answer a question like that, it's because you don't want shit to go everywhere. You're the one making the claim that it's good
>>
>>61185492
>He's right imo because you can easily answer a question like that, it's because you don't want shit to go everywhere

Yes, the answer is incredibly obvious, that's what makes it a stupid question. What part of this is confusing for you?
>>
>>61177382
It's bad. Like, really bad. The singing is horrid, the playing is sloppy and the music is uninteresting.
>>
>>61183162
Modern pop is great. Adele is bland
>>
>>61185430
Because generally speaking toilet designs make it impossible to shit in the more beneficial position, squatting.

http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2012/09/20/161501413/for-best-toilet-health-squat-or-sit

Answer the question. What's so obvious that makes TVU&N good.
>>
if you don't think that tvu&n is one of the greatest albums or that the velvet underground is one of the greatest bands then fine, no problem. you probably have bad taste but that's ok

if you argue that they're shit then you clearly have zero understanding of music and it will be impossible to reason with you. your opinion on anything related to music should be discarded and that's exactly how it works in the real world
>>
>>61185659
>Because generally speaking toilet designs make it impossible to shit in the more beneficial position, squatting.

Proving that the question was stupid. Which totally contradicts your argument that there is no such thing as a stupid question.
>>
>>61185679
I think it's a fine album but I think it is rather overrated for what it is and it seems as though the people here are unable to validate why they think it's so good beyond it being influential
>>
>>61185679
Not really.
>>
>>61185679
I haven't said it's shit for the entirety of this discussion. I just want to know why its good.
>>61185703
I hope you realize I was critiquing the reason as to why people sit while shitting.
>>
ITT:
>people asking over and over and over again why TVU&N is a great album

you guys know there is a webpage that describes it perfectly, right? it's from a critic that gets cited here quite frequently, i'm surprised you're not aware of it:

http://www.scaruffi.com/vol2/velvet.html

not understanding on your own why it's a great album shows that you're pretty stupid. what shows that you're flat out retarded is that you can't even use google to find a review that will explain it for you
>>
>>61185869
>appeal to authority
I've been on /mu/ for three years now. Scaruffi is irrelevant to the discussion at hand, I'm asking YOU to explain what makes it good.
>>

this thread is fucking priceless

hey, i have a great idea for a new thread guys:
try to prove why the doors, bob dylan, jefferson airplane and the beatles are shit

we'll all be really impressed by how unique and patrician you are
>>
>>61186227
I haven't even been trying to say they're shit. All I've been doing is asking anons to say in their own words why they think TVU is good.
>>
>>61186227
The Beatles are a great band

the rest are gay
>>
>>61186227
I honestly don't think the doors are that good either
>>
>>61186289
Just got here, would be glad to answer your question in detail if you answer mine first.

What is your opinion of the band and the album? Have you read that Scaruffi review that was linked? Do you think he's wrong? If so, where is he wrong?

I just want to establish that you're not trolling and that you're genuine before I type out paragraph after paragraph detailing how genius the band is and how TVU&N is the greatest album of all time. It seems like you might just be fucking around.
>>
I would like to get a book like this for christmas. I would never buy this for myself, and I probably wouldn't care about most of the albums, but if someone put the thought into buying this for me I would be happy.
>>
>>61186289
Because I like it.
>>
>>61186425
I personally enjoy the band myself - I highly disagree with the idea of them being the best band of all time and TVU&N being the greatest album ever (White Light/White Heat is my personal favorite of their discography). I've listened to all of their "canon" (ie, non live archival) releases, hell, I even think Squeeze is slightly underrated. There's just been a tendency I've noticed on /mu/ to defend certain bands with a blind reverence ("if you don't like David Bowie you don't like music" is something I see constantly posted) and I'd like to see people make their own views more.

I've read Scaruffi's essay but it was quite a while ago and to be blunt it's not really what I'm looking for from this thread anyway.

Don't know if that makes me a troll or not, but I would like to see your thoughts.
>>
>>61185917

Citing somebody else's argument isn't an appeal to authority.

>>

I don't see your point here. I don't think it's the awful album most VU fans think it is and therefore underrated. Not hard to grasp.

Don't remember the name or url. Some chick was running a blog where she listened to and reviewed all of the albums in the book. She was a "normie" and a lot of her complaints were that the music was either old or weird iirc and /mu/ lost its shit. She made it private after that.

Pretty solid looking list might have to make my way through it over summer.

Marked off the albums I've listened to, not as much as I would have though but then again I don't really listen to what people suggest on /mu/

Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water, T. Rex's Electric Warrior, and Hendrix's Are You Experienced are some of the best classic rock albums ever. I'd suggest those next!
