Finished evening up the clear coat, ordered a bridge, pickguard and neckplate. Just gotta wait on arrival. All blacked out, have a Seymour Duncan pairing of the Pegasus and a Sentient to throw in it. Gonna be my DIY Jim Root Jazzmaster.

All from scratch from Spanish Cedar.
>>
>>61149203
Don't knock it till you try it familia. Fanned frets are pretty sweet.
>>
so i finally have a decent solo set put together. just nice slow and quiet folk songs. i want to get something like a blues jr and a new guitar to perfect my sound. i was thinking of a strat, but i also think a warm humbucker sound would go really well with it too. what do you think? best guitar to play out of a blues jr?

>>
>>61149244

>>
I have a question about CAGED minor scale forms and music theory.
- Why does playing the D scale form over the C octave shape (and C over A, and A over G, ect.) result in a minor scale instead of a major?
- Are they the same thing as pentatonic scales? I have tons of questions but I don't know if /gg/ likes being used for this.
>>
>>61149310

Yeah, I didn't use any wood filler or anything, just brushed on and sanded to relatively flat. I don't have the paintbooth/air brush/patience to do super flat pro finishes.
>>
>>61149364
why?
>>
I feel like such an idiot. It's my first time learning any instrument, I picked up a bass guitar because why the hell not. Played for a few months to get the basics right and now I have a teacher. The most important part for now (except for basic technique) is to immediately know all the notes and where they are in the fretboard for every string and to learn sheet music apparently. Both of those seem fucking impossible to me. I've been trying for 3 weeks now, and I'm usually a fast learner, but for some reason I can't freaking memorise where those notes are and I can't fluently read sheet music. What the hell is up with that? Is it supposed to take that long? I know that I sound like an annoying prick right now but this is starting to get frustrating.
>>
>>61149764
eventually it will click for you and you'll go from knowing nothing to what feels like everything
>>
>>61149744
Takes pedals very well, has 3 channels and i think you will just be much happier especially if you ever need to cut through a mix
>>
>>61149831
also imo Blues Jr has a pretty thin tone
>>
>>61149831
does it have reverb like the blues jr? i don't care about pedals. i want a thick warm clean sound
>>
>>61149843
Yes sir.
>>
>>61149805
Eh, I'm not so sure about that. How long did it take any of you guys to fluently read sheet music or to be completely aware of every note in every position you're playing in?
>>
>>61149865
it was super easy for me maybe i'm just autistic
>>
>>61149893
Or maybe I'm just stupid... Eh, back to practice. I'll check the thread later.

>>
>>61150422
That's would be true if any wood was actually soft enough for this to be the case. But in reality the only way the wood effects the tone is with a very thin bottom of a neck pocket on a bolt on guitar, so thin that the wood could be bent by hand. In other words, no guitar ever.

It's understandable that you think this. You might find this video interesting. Let me tell you right off the author doesn't believe in the effects of tonewoods in solidbodies. But the video is just a test of different tonewoods, without any other differences in the test. Draw your own conclusions.

>>
>>61152096
If you're looking for versatility you might consider adding some controls that let you sculpt the tone more. I would recommend a single coil blender or a series/parallel blender control. The series/parallel option would be the less drastic of the options and won't compromise the hum canceling. If you object to adding control pots you can just add a switch instead of a blend. It's worth the trouble, and none of these mods will alter your tone when disabled completely and with a no load pot.

I would expect that the clarity of a single coil would help with clean tones. if you are looking for that warmth however, you might go for an alnico 2 humbucker in the bridge. I don't know, it is up to what you want. If you are dead set on humbuckers why not. Just coil tap them!

Yes they are.

Started fucking around with Don't Talk to Strangers/Ain't Talkin' Bout Love for no reason tonight and wasn't getting picking right/adding notes where there shouldn't be. Pick up my Jazz III and it all comes together.

I feel really bad for my LPJ, I've had it only a year and there's several nasty scuffs and it's already aged 20 years in terms of its looks.
>>
>>61153990
The weird thing is that in my case the problem was the fretting hand lel. I guess it makes picking easier thus making it easier to focus on other things without fucking up the picking.
>>
>>61149224

So for how long should I be able to play on metal strings before my fingers give up?
I'm a complete beginner, and my fingers start complaining after 5 min. Will it be like this for the first few weeks? I take breaks and then come back to it, but my fingers get fucked up regardless.
>>
>>61154890
That's how I was when I first started.
Around week 2, I started getting callouses and I could play longer. After that, I could mess around on the guitar for around an hour, no problem. Even now, they'll still ache but it's a pain I can play through.

I tried Elixir strings for the first time, because they came on my Taylor, and now I can mess around on the guitar for much longer than I could before.
>>
>>61153550
I'm taking a break from fingerpicking stuff and decided to learn a few simple Norah Jones songs. Now I'm trying to look for more nice songs to play. I feel like I keep running out of songs to learn.
I got a Taylor 110 as an early Christmas gift. Now I don't need to borrow my dad's guitar.
>>
>>61154965
Alright. It's just a pain when I want to play, but my fingers won't let me. Good thing I've got nothing but time on my hands right now due to the holidays.
>>
>>61155120
Yeah, I know that feeling.
If the guitar's been messed with before, you should also check the action/bridge height if you can. My dad's guitar had a ridiculous amount of action that made it nearly impossible to play, especially for a beginner. It made things so much easier after I fixed it.

Learn the A Natural Minor scale starting on the 5th fret of the E string. Learn all the note names in the scale at that position. They are all natural notes; no accidentals. Once you have those memorized, you can easily find the accidentals by going a fret above or below most of the natural notes. Eventually, this will become second nature and you won't have to think about an accidental's relationship to an adjacent natural note and you will be able to find the accidental right off. Once you have master of this position, move the scale to another position on the neck and follow the same process.

This works for C major as well, because it has all the same notes as A minor, the main distinction is that the emphasis on the tonal center changes to a different note (C).

Is it a bad idea to alternate playing electric and acoustic guitars early in the learning process?

I'm a beginner, been playing for two months on an Epi LP Special II and now bought an acoustic for my parents home (I visit them quite often and don't want to lose practice while I'm there). I feel a bit retartet now playing with the acoustic as it a lot less "forgiving".

Also, is there something in particular that I'm better off focusing on while on the acoustic, given that my main instrument is still the electric?

If anything, it's better to play an acoustic if you're learning

Learn to recognize intervals and the sound of the various major family, minor family, dominant family, etc chords.

http://www.musictheory.net/exercises/ear-interval

I think it would be hard to figure out the exact key a song is in without an instrument handy. It would pretty much require perfect pitch. But you could probably figure out how to listen and transcribe a tune using relative pitch.

Drill your intervals.

neither of those are going to do that. you need at least 15 tube watts and that's if your drummer doesn't play like a monkey. if you have a loud drummer you're going to need around 30 tube watts

that's not a tiny terror. it's a micro 20w tube/ss hybrid. it's not loud enough to play over a drummer.
