What's everyone's favorite solo album?

Are there any interesting prog albums coming out in 2016?

This is fucking amazing.

It may feel like it starts off slow but the final track is my fucking jam.

pick one.

The guy needs to just stick to remastering classic prog rock albums instead of actually writing anything else.

That one is GOAT-tier prog for sure. I love their For Girls who Grow Plump. Call me weird, but that album sounds as if Brian Wilson and made an album with Pink Floyd.

I wouldn't say PF, but it's definitely very poppish. The Dog has such a great big outro, and Surprise is such a cute good pop song.

Both have fallen off the map after their latest solo offerings completely flopped.

Cedric and Omar complete each other, without each other they're just two post-hardcore guys with zero direction and all the talent in the world they're just squandering.

Which is better: krautrock, or prog?
>>
>>61147045
krautrock is a really vague term
in general though krautrock focuses on some kind of meditative repetition or aimless jam sessions which I'm not really fond of

if i'm looking at old progressive music i want ~engaging dynamic compositions~

>>61147090
Interesting. I'm listening to Can right now and never became into Krautrock into now. Can't some parts of Krautrock have dynamic compositions though? Not all of it sounds like jam sessions, although I completely understand where you're getting that from
>>
>>61147240
yeah, it's not a strict rule
krautrock often refers to a pretty wide german prog scene rather than a single specific style
I like a couple of the early Can albums
>>
>>61147045
Krautrock isn't really a genre, but I would say as a scene, Krautrock (particularly Can, Faust, Popol Vuh, and Kraftwerk) was more influential and innovative than any of the Prog movements . "Better" is subjective aside from those criteria though. To me, King Crimson and Yes will always be more listenable and enjoyable than Faust I or Hosianna Mantra. I still love Can though.

Hmm, okay. Could you recommend me some prog you enjoy? The only thing I've listening to from the past would be King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd, Genesis, and Yes. Is Rush worth listening to?
>>
>>61147395
Rush can get really cheesy, but at their best they were as good as the best English prog bands.
>>
>>61147395
there's a lot of good prog in that vein you're familiar with, rush are more hard rock focused and lack the weirdness of GG (for instance)

american prog tends to be very influenced by Yes, like Yezda Urfa, PRE, Pentwater, Starcastle...
>>
>>61147395

Rush is worth listening to allright, they're earlier albums leans more toward heavy prog rock, while their 80's stuff is more influenced by new wave, it's quite melodic with the synths, their stuff after the 80's to now is kinda a throwback to their earlier music with a more modern sound
>>
>>61148388
they're being influenced by bands that influenced them... like dream theater
>>
I listen to so much prog from the 70s, I don't really know whats what in modern prog. Can anyone post some youtube links of some of the better modern prog acts? Ideally post 2000's. I just want a nice modern prog primer, not just symphonic but definitely with some symphonic included. I feel like a nerd when I see all these modern prog groups being discussed and I'm just sitting here listening to Starless And Bible Black for the umpteenth time
>>
>>61148415

listen to clockwork angels by Rush, it's a great album and a concept album too
>>
>>61148100

Mirthrandir is another cool american band
>>
>>61148472
yeah they're more on the GG side of things tho
>>
>>61148100

yeah they're fun as hell
i like Japanese 80s prog that goes way deeper into that twinkletoes synth territory (like Novela) so why wouldn't i dig Starcastle

>>
>>61148752
those bands you listed are great, people calling others plebs for listening to them are idiots, i recommend listening to some Genesis, emerson lake and palmer and Rush, these are bands formed in the 70's, if you wanna listen to neo-prog check out marillion

Mr. Sirius will be your shit if you like canterbury. personally too chill for me but well done.
Bi Kyo Ran are a King Crimson rip but they're a GOOD Crimson rip
Vermillion Sands have a good female vocalist
Gonin-ish are more prog metal but they have an incredible female vocalist as well as great keys. Jinbaika is one of my favorite songs in the genre so i've linked it below

I like some avant-prog and hate a lot of symph-prog but avant-prog fans tend to have a really elitist attitude and forget that sometimes the genre is just cheesy fantastical pomp and it's ok to be cheesy fantastical pomp. It's ok to be fun, you don't need to sound like Webern all the time.

Full disclosure, I joined RYM thanks to chum and he's the first friend I had on there so I'm not ripping on him. Just saying that he has a bias towards the more weirdo side and that may not be best for someone new to prog.

Also Fastro's weird issues with English are pretty endearing to me. He's a total goofball but some of the stuff he says makes a lot of sense in some stoned way. His reviews are like the RYM version of Zen koans. I particularly like his review of Sheshet's s/t that just says "fruit music"
>>

>>
>>61149895
i should also mention marge litch, who are a crossover between the japanese sympho-prog scene and the later japanese power metal scene. a lot of their members are now in alhambra, who have a very similar sound mixing symphonic prog and power metal.

After almost two albums having been listened to, their M.O. seems to be dark ambience with briskly paced, bass-driven groovy overtones with 80s production value. It's terrific and a worthy continuation of ideas put forward in 70s prog.

Never really got into any of the Relayer tracks. Sound Chaser is wonderful and catchy and energetic, although the solo guitar middle is way too long. To Be Over has good melodies but it seems like it's missing something. Gates is pretty good but some parts feel awkward, and to be honest I think Soon, while great as its own thing, is a weak ending and makes the song sort of lopsided.
>>
>>61153350
Soon is basically my favorite moment in Yes' discography, honestly. It's such a refreshing break from the tenseness of the middle section. I feel like it's both their most daring and experimental, and their most lush and pretty, release.

Not the same poster but I thought Act IV was still good album although it doesn't really live up to the previous acts. It's way too upbeat to match up with them and some tracks sounds like it came off Migrant. The production was still gleaming and clean tho. Storywise, it really did ended abruptly where the pimp/priest blackmailed the protagonist then the album stops. Act V better come sooner.

prog is such a terrible name for half the stuff in the prog spectrum these days, the bulk of it is inspired by classic prog music but not conventional prog so almost anything these days could be prog if the band wants to label it as such.

OK Computer could be prog, Illmatic could be prog, even Sigur Ros could be prog if they want it to be prog.

Soft Machine is a great band that sticks out in my mind. Vocals can be a bit annoying at times but overall some great listening.

Act IV was better than all the other acts, imo. Not as good as the Color Spectrum, though.

>Act IV was better than all the other acts
Just no
Act II was the best

IV > II > III > I
You got cool numbers though.

So which 'classic' prog album have you been the most disappointed by?

For me it's Genesis' Selling England by the Pound. The riff of the first track is absolutely out of this world and then it just drops off and disappoints me for the rest of the album.

It's not even as if I hate Genesis, Foxtrot is outstanding, but that album is remarkably boring compared to what everyone talks about it as.

Red seems inferior to ITCOTCK in almost every way.
>>
>>61162616
Starless is the best track by far, and the tone is great but it's a fairly boring album bar Starless
>>

Pawn Hearts. When I started VDGG and liked most of their first three albums, I was super excited to see how good Pawn Hearts would be because of all of the praise it gets, and I wound up not liking any of the three tracks.

i feel like i'm one of the few that dont like starless, i just cant get myself to like red, Discipline is miles better imo,

Yes has the best song and album, Genesis has the best discog mostly cause yes was pretty mediocre outside a few of its best works.
>>61162595
Tarkus, it really sucked. For me its the opposite. Selling England by the pound was very good and Foxtrot was disappointing.
>>
>>61162784
Tarkus is fucking awful, I'm convinced people shill it on /mu/ because it's got a cool looking cover and most of the time with classic prog, a great cover = a good album at the very least.
>>
>>61163594
Marillion have fucking awful covers and their early albums are God tier
>>
>>61162784

i love tarkus, and the rest of the songs are pretty good, tho the title track takes some listens before you start to really get it
>>
>>61163594
tarkus owns because of the hilarious concept, how fucking hard it goes, and the fact that it sounds like a megaman boss theme
