· the contrast between the very colourful objects and the dim, bleak lightning
· the way the picture is cropped, not just the armchair on the left but also the other chair or stool at the right — you know you're not getting the whole picture
· why would a book be placed against the window like that? Or is it a photograph? Is that face looking at us? We can't see it clearly.
· almost no horizontal or vertical lines, only crooked ones except for one (maybe)
· the low quality of the picture.

It's the lighting. To go off what you said, it looks like the photo was taken with a flash or some other light source not dedicated to the room. In other words, that it was taken in the dark.
It looks undoubtedly taken on film too. I'm willing to bet that this was taken with a disposable film camera with a built in flash. It also explains the vignetting or dark corners around the edges.
