I was expecting a little more from their full-length. They went for a less dark and abbraisive, almost psych-punk approach that I wasn't expecting. They're cool if you're into raw black punk regardless, but they're nothing out of this world. I like their demos better.

That album is something else. Given that they already play a more mid-paced death metal style, add to their obvious brutal death influence and something weird happens, something that I don't really experience with most death metal. This is my second listen to the album and I noticed it's not as "technical" as I thought before, but it's just weird and angular and airy and spacious. I do not know if it's actually through-composed but it always feels like you're wandering from section to section not knowing what else will you encounter next. The drumming is spectacular, reminds me of Immolation a bit from how closely the drums imitate and are symmetrical to the guitars at times. The drums are what I was getting to originally, when they get around to those decaying sluggish riffs the drum/guitar interplay is really cool. Because of their slow to mid-paced, tight and meticulate sounding style the drummer gets to do all sort of cool fills and shenanigans and then goes back to that symbiotic relationship with the guitars. It almost sounds like he's just doing some random solo, but it all fits with the music because the guitars and the bass are all fucking weird too.
Pretty new to meal so I just made a 3x3 of some of my favorite albums (I'm not even sure everything here counts as metal).
Based on this, please recommend some more.

Trad. doom, power metal, 70s speed metal, basic heavy metal, and prog metal don't have any punk influence.
Thrash metal, on the other hand was the baby of combining speed/heavy metal with thrash punk, a shortlived punk subgenre in the late 70s-early 80s in the bay area.
nearly every main metal genre, and subgenre after the 80s started to become infused with punk in some ways save for power metal.

Ok I'm gonna start with picking my favorites:

Well in the case of Metallica I really like the Black Album. Slipknot I like Slipknot and IOWA. SOAD I like Toxicity the most but it is close. Disturbed I like Sickness probably the most haven't heard the newer ones yet though.
I think for Slipknot it is that I like the tempo they have combined with Joey Jordison on the drums. I think the reason why I like Metallica is just the sound of the guitar and the melody they have. Disturbed I mainly like because of the voice. SOAD is kinda hard to explain can't really tell you.
Might be easier to say what I don't like which is things that seemingly have no melody or chorus at all I want atleast some structure. Yeah and I don't like grunting so I guess that already eliminates quite a bit.

Thing that makes Blessed Be My Brothers so impressive is that this album has one of it's kind sound wheres modern metal biggest weakness is that theres little to none of originality.
On the other hand pic related is pretty generic as a whole, but everything is put together so perfectly. Thats one of my biggest suprises this year.
