I liked DG before i knew about MRAthony, I also disagree with pretty much everything he says about every album he has reviewed.
I don't need glasses, I've never read a pitchfork article in my entire life, and will continue to avoid because it appears to have degenerated into lemaymay review site with highly questionable writers.

Nope, I've been following rap since College Dropout and underground since So Far Gone had first dropped. Hip-hop and black music in general is in the greatest shape it's been in ages. You can see pop music taking a lot of notes from both it and electronic music, and in consequence, it's getting better too, if not a bit watered down. I disagree with Fantano far too often to be swayed by his opinion and Pitchfork has the credibility of Gawker and Kotaku.
I remember when Supercommuter was about the only rapper /mu/ knew. Now everyone talks about mainstream ones like Kanye like they're anything more than Bieber or Rihanna or whoever.

Pitchfork and Fantano are as good a starting point for your musical explorations as any other. Pitchfork's end-of-year lists and BNMs are committee approved and consequentially pretty weak, but the reviews themselves often come to pretty satisfying and insightful conclusions about the music.

It's hard to get into big discographies without some guidance. Imagine trying to get into Bowie knowing that you like the song Ziggie Stardust but not knowing what any of his other work sounds like. Charts provide a starting place for people like that.

I can imagine that. Not with that song, 'cause it's shit, but I, unlike the fucking mouthbreathing drones of today's /mu/, listened to the album in the order that seemed most approachable. I'm not a fucking moron, so I figured going to the years that he was most popular - the '70s - would be a good idea. I did a small amount of background reading (literally seconds on Wikipedia, guided by the Table of Contents on his page) and saw that the Berlin trilogy was considered a little less accessible. Being that I was not into electronics as much at the time, I decided to set those at the end of my listen through his '70s material. Voila. I didn't need to meticulously follow some guide from an idiot on /mu/.
