I finally listened to Kannon.
I was so excited, I got the good rip, my good headphones, turned the volume up... and was so disappointed.
Why are they doing the exact same thing after 6 years of no new solo stuff? If you had told me these were unreleased tracks and asked me to guess which period they were from, I wouldn't be able to tell you because of how generic they are.
Monoliths was great because they stepped outside the box a little, but this was just the most uninspired BWOOO I've ever heard from them. A shame, because the production was good and the chanting vocals had a lot of potential.

>>60830416
It was alright. I actually preferred the Mono side, which was surprising since they're normally not my thing. The Enter the Void sample was kind of lame even though I love the movie

Aside from the lyrics I didn't think the Centrics were that bad. Kind of awkward considering they'd radically changed their style and were a different band save one member, but songs like Firmament and Wille Zum Untergang are excellent.

I know, I meant more in a sense that they're complex in comparisons to what you hear in a lot of music. Sure, it's not hard, but there's something about 8th notes on a snare over 16ths on bass drum that seems to really throw people off.
Also, just because the standard technique of doing them is simple doesn't mean they have to be done that way.

Truly this team is the greatest in the thrash metal genre. Every Vio-Lence song packs an unmistakable riff, each one awesome and sanctified by the fingers of Flynn and Demmel.

It was a fine reunion when they came together again for Machine Head. Look at the results of Flynn's career without Demmel. It began with blistering speed and great success, but it was a wayward attempt, and Rob was lost in the malaise of nu-metal toward the late 90s.

When Demmel returned to his side, the light showed once again. Through The Ashes of Empires and Blackening are critically acclaimed and seminal albums in the New American Metal awakening. Were there finer albums of the genre at this time? I think not.

>>
>>60832594
Yes it is. They're practically ripping off Slayer on this song. Everything from the solo to the riff variations and the lead into the solo at 1:38. It's all the same technique that Slayer used in the beginning when writing a song. It's the same content. There's no difference. You can throw Tom Araya up there and it would be a Slayer song.

It is a huge fucking difference. That was a riffing style that literally did not exist as far as I know before Possessed. Calling Hell Awaits protodeath is just wrong.

it's not like all death metal necessarily has tremolo picking. any kind of rapid chromatic riffing can get the job done at least to some extent, which is what hell awaits (and even stuff as early as show no mercy) does.

Looks like I stand corrected there. But if a couple of sections is the best you can do to show death metal riffing in Hell Awaits, calling it a protodeath album is a huge exaggeration. Plus that riff are over consonant intervals and not chromatic ones.

I think that's the argument that is trying to be presented.

You could say that Possessed were a proto-death or first wave of death metal band, but there's a lot of room for arguing that Slayer were on that same turf at the same time or even before Possessed. Just look at this thread and you can see that nearly everyone agrees that there were a lot of similarities between the two, the only difference is that for some reason Possessed gets more credit for being death metal because they have a few different riffs.

And they're not even that different. I just listened to "Holy Hell" and "Exorcist." Slayer were practically writing these songs on Show No Mercy. Just listen to "Evil Has No Boundaries." I know you'll hear it dude. It's there.
