Carrie & Lowell is the most overrated album of the year.
This has been a tremendous year for folk music. Why is the concensus folk AOTY a poor-man's Morning Phase? There's like 2 or 3 legitimately great tracks on there but so many of the songs are so clumsily written. I can forgive that sort of thing on Universal Themes since that whole album is basically one long stream of consciousness but C&L is supposed to be concise and polished. And it just sounds too light and airy to get really "into" the atmosphere of that record.

i don't know, man. indie folk is kind of my wheelhouse...i listen to it more than any genre by far...nothing came close to carrie & lowell for me this year. just because you don't personally like it doesn't dismiss the vast majority of opinions
i liked Jose Gonzales & Tallest Man enough but they didnt transcend for me. I really liked The Oh Hellos' too but same deal.

i haven't listened to a whole lot thats come out this year but I can easily say that We Cool is my aoty. it hits too close to home and I got to see jeff a handful of times this year, each show better than the last.

Frisk Frugt's album is a brilliant folktronica album.
Jerusalem In My Heart's record combines Arabic folk music with drone and electroacoustic music.
In Plain Speech by Circuit des Yeux is an avant-folk album. Haley Fohr's voice is really deep but also really moving.

holy shit, looking at all these charts i now suddenly realized how shitty 2015 was. like im not even joking, 2015 has been objectively one of the worst years in the history of popular music. talk about staleness in music, holy fuck. could music get any more boring and pussified than it is now with all these wimpy p4k albums?
Young Fathers was probably my favourite. Haven't really kept up with releases past June and I've also been disappointed with most hyped records this year (Beach House, Father John Misty, Everything Everything, Sufjan, etc)

I'm glad you liked it but half your list is why i found it pretty poor. I'd heard the new PiL and Killing Joke records were good but thought they were average (especially Killing Joke, thought it was pretty bad). And Everything Everything I just didn't like at all, I thought it was just average pop at best.

My taste was that of a high schoolers this year.
And I don't even LOVE any of these albums. Not a single album has really struck me like in years past. There's usually a couple during the year that I hold dear, but that's not the case this year. I think I might be growing out of having a real strong emotional connection to music :\
Honestly I listened to The National's High Violet and Julianna Barwick's Nepenthe more this year than any 2015 album.
