I'm genuinely upset about this. STP was one of the first bands that I got heavily into, and although I rarely listen to them anymore, they had a solid body of work. For almost ten years, I've kept a compilation of STP songs that I made in my car visor as an "all-purpose emergency CD" because of how diverse they were. I know they're best-known for the crunchy, radio-friendly jock jams from early in their career, but it was the experimental, psychedelic mid-work that always found its way into CD's I'd make for crushes. Then there was the later, largely unknown material that was gentle, sometimes devastatingly frail-sounding and made you worry about the singer. I saw them live when I had the chance, knowing full well I may not get another since the fact that he was still alive was a bit of a punchline. Everyone knew this was going to happen, it was only a matter of when. R.I.P. Scott. You went farther than anyone could have believed. Thanks for the music you left.

Middle age is generally reckoned to be in your 40s with the average life expectancy of a white male being 76. So yeah, it really isn't normal to die before at least your 60s.
Everybody saw it coming. Dude wasn't capable of living his life without heroin. Still sad, though.

Don't know where you're getting your information but 50 is generally considered middle-aged. That's why it's called "over the hill."

Honestly? He had the range and tone for it. I dug the EP he did with them, it sounded like they went more for the rockers of Core than the slower Plush/Creep numbers. Granted it probably would have been tiring for a whole album.
>>60798693
Chester was a huge STP fan so he thought it was his dream come true to be in the band...until he found that they didn't want to produce any new material with him and only cared about playing Greatest Hits setlists, so he finally got bored and left.

you can hear his voice change from core to purple and then by the time they did tiny music all gruffness to it was gone. He still did some great soft numbers that showcase his voice quite well I think, and as another anon said you can feel the frailty to it

Or, more accurately kept it alive in mid-decade when Cobain was dead, Pearl Jam gave up writing commercial material, Alice In Chains broke up, and RHCP became irrelevant without John Frusciante.
After 96, pop punk and nu metal revived mainstream rock, but there was a hole between Cobain's death and the rise of Limp Bizkit. Smashing Pumpkins and STP filled it.

Keith emphasized over and over again in his book about the pharmaceutical-grade aspect.
He was like, 'yeah, I literally only used the finest pharmaceutical grade stuff you could possibly procure and measured it so carefully every single time it was crazy'
Regardless, something about his makeup is special.

I am song sick of watching my favorite song get butchered year after year. I love Scott. I love Stevie. I love Brian. I have nothing against Bono or Billie. This performance is just terrible.
Hell I've watched some of my most beloved artists of all time butcher Beatles songs. It rarely if ever goes well.

He doesn't exist anymore. He's dead. The only reason you're sad is it reminds you that you're going to die too.
>>60799525
I feel you, I was too. It's like they focused way too much on the mini series (which was good) and the gimmick of having a musician from each city's scene and not enough on the quality of the songs themselves.
At least he died doing what he loved ... drugs.
>>60799518
If you can believe every whisper about alleged artist drug use by the media then wouldn't it stand to reason that I can believe that Ian doesn't use drugs or drink based on what people say around him and what he says himself? Anyway, you're trying to change the subject. You asked for an artist that doesn't do drugs and I provided one.
>>60799436
Thanks for not disagreeing.
>>60799523
>Smashing Pumpkins and STP filled it.
Green Day anyone? I'm pretty sure Dookie and Insomniac were important rock albums during this period.
>>60799571

but yes, he is one. still the initiating post is dumb and clearly most artists use drugs at least to some degree

Certainly created more of an impact.

>>60799527
It's a miracle! Christ can fill me with his liquid and I will become pure!
>>60799584
I see where you're going. In the long run, those were more important albums because of Green Day's 2000s resurgence while STP and SP both died with the 90s.
>>60799595
honestly you probably wouldnt have fans without drugs so don't fret over the idea
>>60799603
SP's splash exponentially bigger.
>>60799566

Mellon Collie was a huge, blockbuster Led Zeppelin IV-tier album while Insomniac couldn't come close to that, but as I said Smashing Pumpkins didn't outlast the 90s while Green Day came back in the following decade with an album that did become LZIV huge.
At least he went out better than Layne Staley
>On April 19, 2002, Staley's accountants contacted Staley's former manager Susan Silver and informed her that no money had been withdrawn from the singer's bank account in two weeks. Silver then contacted Staley's mother Nancy McCallum, who placed a call with 911 to say she hadn't heard from him "in about two weeks."[42] The police went with McCallum and her ex-husband to Staley's home, "When police kicked in the door to Layne Staley's University District apartment on April 19, there, laying on a couch, lit by a flickering TV, next to several spray-paint cans on the floor, not far from a small stash of cocaine, near two crack pipes on the coffee table, holding a fully loaded syringe in his right hand, and the syringe in his leg, reposed the remains of the rock legend." It was reported that the 6 ft Staley weighed only 86 pounds (39 kg) when his body was discovered. [43]

In SP's case, it had less to do with drugs than Billy Corgan being a cockbag who ruined the band and caused them to break up.
>>60799651

And Layne was only 34 when he went, so Scott managed to last 14 years longer than that. And still performing to the end while Layne was basically a hermit when he died.
>>60799649
Thanks to Mellon Collie, Pumpkins were basically the biggest band on the planet in 95. Then it went to shit when Chamberlin got arrested and left the band. They never recovered from that
Don't do drugs kids.
>>60799696
Courtney did not break up every band in the 90's, anon.
>>60799710
Nobody knows the names except sycophants.
People probably more recognize the sound. Actually picturing the band is nauseating.
"In Layne’s last interview with Argentinean writer Adriana Rubio he sounded like he was pretty much done(with life), that he knew somewhere deep inside that he was not going to make it. The conversation took place less than three months before he died from an overdose of heroin and cocaine, revealing a broken man, who, at 34 years old had given up the will to live. Staley tells the interviewer, “I know I’m dying, I’m not doing well. Don’t try to talk about this to my sister Liz. She will know it sooner or later.”
Layne continues, “This fucking drug use is like the insulin a diabetic needs to survive, I’m not using drugs to get high like many people think. I know I made a big mistake when I started using this sh–. It’s a very difficult thing to explain. My liver is not functioning and I’m throwing up all the time and shitting my pants. The pain is more than you can handle. It’s the worst pain in the world. Dope sick hurts the entire body"

I was born in 88, so I first became consciously aware of music in around 98-99. I remember Creed, Blink 182, and RHCP having their big comeback, but didn't hear anyone talk about SP even when it was still the 90s. Their downfall after 96 was incredibly fast.

>>60799459
The past 2 Alice in Chains albums have been pretty fuckin solid though. They're the only one of the old guard who's power level, while maybe not as high as it was during Dirt and the self titled one, is still enough to churn out good songs that are worth listening to. They sound like a natural maturation of what they did at their peak.
Meanwhile Soundgarden, STP, Pearl Jam, and others are just...meh now. RHCP hit a few rough spots but Stadium Arcadium is one of their strongest albums and it was released well into the 2000's. But now I feel like they're sort of meh too.
>>60799810
I know, right? People can listen to and appreciate different kinds of music. Isn't that weird? What a crazy world we live in.

Linkin Park, now they have matured quite a bit. Their recent songs sound nothing at all like Meteora.
The ultimate band for betas pretending to be alphas.
>>60799742
It literally was. They're a band that went from having a relatively niche following from Gish, to hitting mainstream with Today in 93-94, to releasing Mellon Collie and becoming the biggest band in the world at the time in 95. Then 96 comes around, Melvoin ODs, Chamberlin gets arrested and leaves the band and BAM, they're pretty much cooked as a musical unit. Adore comes out in 98 but by then the damage was already done, they were fucked hard by the lack of Chamberlin.
Which is why Corgan keeps bringing him back
>>60799847

You're talking about dubious """"""relative connotations""""" and I can picture you raising your fat, dorito stained fingers to the air as you say this, and THEN you start talking about """""value""""" as something objective. Whether music is """"good"""" or not is pretty much always subjective. STP were "good" because lots of subjective individuals enjoyed their music, as well as professional critics who can assess it from a more objective viewpoint.

I thought it was solid, although I guess the fact that several songs were surprisingly bright and "happy", at least for AiC, could be interpreted by some as boring. It seemed like Low Ceiling, Voices, Scalpel, etc were channeling the brightness of No Excuses. But maybe it was too much light fare for one AiC album.
But Hollow, Stone, etc were heavy as fuck.

>I've kept a compilation of STP songs that I made in my car visor as an "all-purpose emergency CD" because of how diverse they were
There is this little neighbor kid (10 years old) who does chores for my parents after they retired to a small town and they spoil him rotten as their little helper monkey.
He just discovered STP as his new favorite band and he was making mix CDs for everyone because he is a little music nerd and wanted to tell the world about this "new" band.
I was handed a CD on Saturday while I was out there to listen to on my drive home and it had been about 10 years since I heard some of these songs. It had the usual radio songs like creep, vasoline, etc but also some B-Sides and overlooked later stuff.
Still weird for a 10 year old to suddenly discover STP as his new favorite band though.
>>60799689
>I ran into him out in the University District. He looked like an eighty-year-old version of himself. His skin was grey, dark circles under his eyes. He had already lost a finger or two from his veins collapsing and not getting enough circulation into his hands. He started losing teeth. I remember seeing him from a distance, and I thought, "That’s the oldest punk rocker I’ve ever seen." He had Doc Martens on, pegged black jeans, black leather jacket. Stunk — oh my God he stunk. Barely recognized me, even though I’d known him for years. It was probably the last year of his life.
If you listen to the last recorded AIC songs like Get Born Again, Staley was singing with a noticeable lisp because his teeth had started to rot out.
