I hope I get better with time then. BTW, how do you press the strings? I was told to use the side of my index finger to avoid the creases. I'm having problem with getting my wrist straight too and with placing my thumb properly when playing barre chords.
>>
>>60736500
Side of your fingers, the bony part. It will help with getting a clearer sound. As for thumb position, there's a couple ways to do, some more right than others, but in general there's 'american' and 'classical' style. American has your thumb over the guitar almost, kind of like you're holding a bat or something. Classical will have your thumb behind the neck at all times and makes your fingers more perpendicular to the fret board. Technically, classical will be better for playing more technical things but in the grand scheme of things, only nerds care about that shit.

>>60736644
That's a big reason why a lot of electric players don't use classical wrist positioning. Classical guitars have broader, wider necks that accomodate that kind of positioning, and you're also sitting down when you play. Try playing your guitar like this, it will help with making your wrist more comfortable in that position.

only if they're cheap because crappy metals mean the knife edge gets dull and tuning stability gets obliterated

Yes, especially for a beginner.

asking again because no answer in last thread and then posted in the wrong new /gg/:

so as i was throwing some slightly larger gauge flatwounds on my old affinity strat, the third wound fucked me and apparently the welds inside that third peg snapped. Presumably better hardware would sort this issue out, right?

And if so what do you guys suggest for tuning machines? I've been looking at a few sets on guitarfetish but i'm not sure what would be best for this cheap strat.

use a strap when you sit down and make the strap do all the work to hold it in position. basically if you find yourself needing to hold the bottom of the neck with your fretting hand so the neck stays in position you're doing it wrong and the strap needs to come up higher and tighter.

don't worry about looking like a faggot with a high strap, you're practicing at home.

get in the habit of doing this so you don't end up like those idiots with back problems from hunching over their guitars because their posture is shit, and wrist problems from constantly bending their wrist in dumb ways because once again their posture is shit

Will accuracy come eventually over time or do I need to practice songs slowly and gradually speed up faster in order to not pick up some fucked up habits? I just fuck around with songs and my strumming is improving a lot, but I want to know whether I should chill out and make sure notes/chords are being played without any fuck ups or if it'll just happen after a bit of practice.
>>
>>60738775
it's probably fine if you use the pinky.
I still agree it'd be better if the volume knob was the closest, that way you can do swells without stretching your hand like a monkey.

yes the inside of the peg is welded to the main bit of the tuning machine.

the reason i'm asking for good tuners is because obviously i don't want cheap shit that is going to snap again with heavier strings. so some actual advice would be greatly appreciated.

That Cort doesn't use an OFR so I don't know how they compare, but cheap licensed Floyds will make you want to kill yourself. This is coming from a Floyd Rose user.

Don't string them backwards if you can avoid it. This led to instability problems on a few guitars I've encountered. It only takes five seconds to clip the ball end off.

All it take is messing them up once(like trying to intonate with any string tension at all or changing your strings by taking them all off) for you to realize what a pain in your ass they can be.

If handled properly with knowledge they're still a pain, but less of one.
>>
>>60737851
I like the Planet Waves auto trim locking tuners. Just because the guitar itself is cheap doesn't mean the replacement hardware needs to be. Worst case, you can buy a cheap ebay set to drop in when you sell it and take your nicer tuners to your next guitar.

>>60737851
Locking tuners are nice and make changing strings pretty fast. I have Sperzels on my cheap RG. I did have to drill some holes for them. Most of the major brands seem decent. Grover, Gotoh, Schaller, etc.
>>
I feel like buying a new amp for home and small bar gigs. Would love something valve-like for mostly blues (a la Blues Deluxe) without the hassle of tubes, I have been looking at Orange CR60C which - I've heard - is really close to tubes as you can get, but the breakup seems way too crunchy and rockish. Have you had any experiences this amp? Any other amps I should check out?

what the fuck

you might as well stop playing guitar too because you know, the hassle of strings

what is the hassle of tubes exactly? many amps are cathode biased meaning that you dont have to adjust the bias manually

replacing tubes takes up less time than a string change and they last far longer than strings too

>>60739300
Hassle of tubes? You retube an amplifier once a year if you feel like being excessive.
>>
>>60739707
>>60739904
May I rephrase that? I'd be happy if the amp itself and the maintenance of it wouldn't eat into my limited budget. It's still a hassle to lug around heavy combos, always be on your edge to keep the amp away from any impact, always keep spare tubes on you. Is it not a hassle then?

>>60739881
Thanks! I'll look into that. Is it a fully digital amp? It having a USB output brings out some doubts.
>>
>>60740156
idk, it's all solid state I'm pretty sure. The USB output one is probably a brand new model. I always buy used. my retired bloozdoctor landlord has one in the living room and he's obsessed with it even though he has multiple really nice all-tube amps.

If you can't afford a tube amplifier then whatever, but it's not like tube amplifiers cost extra to own. You MIGHT retube once every other year.

A lot of the weight comes from the speaker. What world do you live in where things magically fly into and destroy things you own? Having spare tubes is a good idea if you're gigging, but realistically I've never had a tube fail during a show.

So the 2 and 4 position would still be humming? Why?
>>
>>60740816
A humbucker and most noiseless singlecoils work with 2 coils that are in reversed position. Both coils will receive the hum and the hum will get killed because both coils are polarized against each other. This only works if you have a even number of coils. if you put position 2 + 4 you got the 2 coils of the noiseless pickup + the 1 coil of the normal pickup.
the coils of the noiseless kill the hum thats received by the noiseless, but the 1 coil of the normal has no coil thats wired in oposit direction -> hum is still there.

If you have 3 normal singlecoils with the mid being RWRP, you'll have hum in 1+3+5 because only 1 coil is active. if you use 2+4 there is the coil of the normal and the reversed of the RWRP -> no hum in 2+4

if you want to introduce someone to metal you need to show them more classic stuff, not the most fedora or the most heavy stuff you can find
Iron Maiden for example could make for a smooth transition, or maybe the less heavy stuff from Judas Priest like British Steel. Maybe even some glam metal.

not him, but the SR505 a friend has is incredibly comfortable to play, and that's coming from a guitarist. The neck is thin and narrow, barely wider than a 6 string guitar, and the 6 string version, the 506, didn't feel that odd.
Not to mention, they're really light basses.
Also anyone knows about the BTB505 ? There's a fretless one for really cheap (350€), and it seems like a good deal considering the specs of the bass.

"Musical" as in more more audible undertones and fundamental harmonic. A shorter scale will have a purer note. Does that clear it up for you? This is the reason bass chords are muddier sounding and harder to make out.

Most classical guitars have shorter scales. And that "less musical" stuff is pure bullshit. It will just be less twangy and sound fatter, and the strings will have lower tension.

The reasoning behind wanting louder overtones was to make up for the loss in these you get moving from acoustic to electric, and from nylon to steel. Naturally this is about perception, as plenty of factors impact the same things. But worth considering if you're getting your first electric.

How does basswood look like in natural finish?

Can I strip my Ibanez off its paint, stain it with minwax, then apply clear coat on it to protect it against dents and scratches?

OR, finish it with tung oil, then apply clear coat?

Also, how do natural finishes work? What protect it against dents and dings? I imagine there's some clear coating that is like poly or nitro thick that protects the wood.

Clear coat won't protect against dents, dings, or scratches. Only in a sense they might be harder to see. Guitars are usually made out of hardwood, that's why they don't get dinged up easily. Also, there's a 1 in a 10000 chance your finish will come out looking as nice as a factory finish.

>>60744981
Play with backing tracks or along with songs more. Playing bass by itself is a lot less fun than guitar by itself.

I did that to an rg7321 a couple of years ago and I don't recommend it. basswood is super soft, so stripping the heavy polyurethane will almost definitely leave all type of dings, but it will look like shit when you stain it anyways.

Not worth the effort imo.
>>
>>60744924
If you want a good(not obviously messed up) looking finish that you can pull off without skill, consider an oil finish. It doesn't look the same but does offer protection for your instrument, albeit less than paint. Just get some linseed oil and rub it all over the bare wood, then let dry and repeat until you're happy with it. Idk if you can change the finish after this though. Also I don't know how this affects grain fillers and stains. This method is used on unfinished necks to make them last a bit longer.

Tung oil will probably look/feel rougher, but it will be easier to apply. In the pic that's minwax rosewood stain with clear nitro gloss over it. For the neck I used aniline dye, but you probably won't be doing that.

It's really not so bad, but it's not an easy wood to strip for a perfect surface. If you don't mind the rustic "pirate ship" kind of surface it's worth doing, but if you want a perfectly smooth and glossy surface I would skip that project altogether.

Tung oil usually has a satin look to it. It works better on harder, less absorbent woods. On basswood it would take forever to build up enough coats to give it a gloss.

I'm not even sure if nitrocellulose would stick to a tung oil undercoat. You would probably have to use polyurethane again, but yeah it would let you build up a glossy finish.

there's little videos that discuss technique, and there are minigames for scale exercises and string skipping and stuff. The only real advantage of Rocksmith is that it gets you to pick up the guitar, which can be significant if you're a poor self-motivator.

It has some video lessons but it's shitty theory-wise.

This, and you can also download custom songs if you don't mind legality.

Well, I tried learning bass by myself for a year or two and ended up with incredibly shtty technique, even though I was going by good video tutorials, you just end up playing really inefficiently and just bad. After two weeks with a really good teacher I already saw insane improvements. You just need someone who can give you feedback imo, and theory is nearly as important as good technique for 99% of people. I think it has its place in addition to normal teaching, but I doubt that it's a good substitute.

I mostly self-taught (due to lack of teachers) and turned out fine. I was always very hand-position conscious though.

You get better at tempo, improvisation and harmony. You tend to be more motivated. You can create stuff together and eventually form a band.

How much practice a week should I go for I'm a bit new to playimg guitar and would like to know

As much as you can? An hour per day split up into 2 chunks is a good start, if you have more time then that's even better.

i just use a damp cloth. the porous rosewood fingerboards seem to get pretty gross compared to the typical strat type maple fingerboard finish.

Why does the guitar/bass crowd have such a hard time accepting simple facts sometimes? I'm an EE and I like to tinker with my guitars a bit, and obviously I have the means to properly measure the actual signal the the guitar puts out. I don't have to rely on my ears or whatever speaker configuration is at the end, and I know many people in forums and in other discussions have done the same. So why do people insist that they hear a difference between 2 different freatboard woods, for example, even after seeing a proper explanation and actual measurements? Why do people hold onto these myths and just ignore evidence?

you'd need an Ampeg 8x10 cab so you can listen to the harmonics to get an idea of how the fundamental would sound

Personal preference and emotional connection to music and instrument blinds people. I just think of guitars as tools, and each tool has its certain use.

I get that, but why wouldn't you incorporate new knowledge and actual measurements into your passion and love? Nobody is saying that "tonewoods" are somehow bad for electrical instruments, it just happens to be mostly irrelevant. The same goes for fretboard woods. They have other properties and you can simply prefer them for some reason, but knowing that it doesn't make a difference only opens up more possibilities and does't hurt your current choice or preference in any way.

it's artsy fartsy stuff.....pursuit of the trivial, nuance, minutae, etc.

there are several main sounds from guitars...within the realm of pickups there are high output, medium, and low output in both single coil and humbucker setups...slight EQ differences on the myriad different models from each pickup company....enough choices to make your head spin, but in the end, I ended my tone chasing after replacing my bridge single coil strat with a dimarzio super distortion and being somewhat disappointed that there wasn't a massive difference like I had thought there would be.

difference in the wood? don't know and don't care, I go for the look first and I like painted guitars the best.
>>
>>60748039
That really is the question, for some the whole ball of wax means nothing, for others its a way to start a fight. Ignore the internet/fight and just play guitar.
>>
>>60742401
what kind of "weird reverbs" are you into? plz enlighten me
>>
>>60747854
there is a guy on youtube named eric czar who plays a 7 string fretless on some of his videos and he is really good.....actually makes music instead of just tapping and popping sounds like a lot of bassists seem to do with these strange multi octave basses.
>>

>>60747954
I'm sure there is something to be said for the resonance of the fretboard, but that isn't a matter of the type of signal it puts out.

Some applications its more relevant, but I personally don't play anything where these types of minute details matter
>>
>>60748107
I guess that's true, it just boggles my mind sometimes.
>>60748102
It's not about nuance, it is factually and measurably incorrect in some cases (definitely for fretboards, mostly correct for the body material as well). And my oscilloscope certainly knows better than anybodys ears.
>>60748127
That's the thing though, resonance of the wood is basically irrelevant since you're using a magnetic pickup. The only thing producing sound from your electric instrument is the strings vibrating, you're not playing something acoustic here. The only thing that can be said is that vibration of the body ever so slightly shifts the position of the pickup in relation to the strings, I measured it, the difference is incredibly tiny and absolutely inaudible to the human ear in most cases.
