Comus First Utterance,
Probably the darkest album ever conceived.
>>60671862
have you only heard like 25 albums?
>>60671862
It's funny, because folk music like this is totally left field, but the topics are so well written and the instrumentation is so clever it is legitimately nightmarish. I've never heard anything that will literally frighten/disgust/disturb me like this.

Just listened to Nick Drake's entire discography and I love it (especially Pink Moon). Where do I go from here if want rainy-day-core folk?
>>60672115
Elliot Smith
>>60671992
the songs of satan himself xDD
Renaissance has some great material, but they don't get very dark. Their discography is pretty good for a more sombre folk collection.
>>60671813
Are you using dark folk as a genre or are you just talking about folk that is dark?
>>60672156
>>60672115
I wouldn't say Nick or Elliot get particularly dark. The get bleak and dreamy. Nick does a great job of creating dreamy landscapes and rainy day sounding music.
Elliot is very insightful and creates brilliant melodies. But I don't think the material is inherently dark, even with the circumstances of his life. I'd say he's more rejuvenating to the ears and spirit.

Some artists label their records as Dark Folk so I guess it's somewhat justified as a genre, but we do have a lot of dumb genres nowadays.
>>60672215
I'd say both, because dark folk isn't a huge genre, and some folk is dark without being labeled dark. Might as well post whatever comes to your mind.

They do a great job of creating unusual folk music, but I wouldn't label it as dark folk. More or less gypsy folk rock, but they have dark material the more you explore their discography.

OK cause I absolutely love Gothic Americana like Jay Munly, tarantella, or the sons of perdition.
Not exactly obscure, but well worth a listen.
