I'm into retrowave but I can tolerate vaporwave when it's funky, sexy and non-sarcastic.

speaking of sexy, check this shit out:

I like vaporwave when it's not just trying to be silly and ironic.
I dig the retro-digital aesthetic and music that has the same feel but that's about it.

that cover art is real shitty and 70% of vaporwave is album art so the music better be real fucking good.

I'm slowly getting into this genre, but please someone explain where did this "Aesthetic" thing came from.

I don't get it

the aesthetic of vaporwave predates the music.

Once people realized this they started putting some thought into it and developing that aesthetic consciously and purposefully.

For example, you got those greek statues and roman busts in vaporwave. They're the embodiment of classical aesthetics of perfection and calm beauty; but they're also very similar to modern-day mannequins, not just because they're just as perfect and white, but also because even in their day they were massively copied and circulated, just like our mannequins. The general idea behind it is that classical aesthetics are about imitation and repetition of a once-tangible canon that has since then been turned into a vague, distant ideal or even a watered-down cliché. Thus you get the idea behind vaporwave and its aesthetics: by idealizing the past, we simultaneously make it kitsch AND sublime, because it becomes distant and unreal; this allows us to contemplate it ironically AND to be nostalgic for it. except instead of iconizing the greek classical period, we do it with the early 90s, kind of like how goths always refer to the XIXth century, sometimes in a parodic fashion, sometimes very seriously and longingly.

this guy loses me when he starts in with the 'witchhouse was the real deal" bit.
>>
>>60646555
Nice trips. He's merely saying that it was a worthy genre deserving of becoming more fleshed-out and realized. The whole "goldfish bowl" definition towards the end of the vid, when he's talking about Night Bus etc. pretty much lays out the appeal of Vaporwave in a pretty straight forward manner.

>>
>>60645139
Lol, you've obviously got an agenda describing aesthetics here. Aesthetics is a lot more like world-building than it is about kitsch and irony and subversion. Those things detract from the purity and primacy of aesthetic encounter. Pure aesthetic encounter is not political or historical. So the idea that you would have to be primed with the same boring narrative pushed by music journalists (not artists) that it's all an ironic accelerationist commentary upon capitalism and blahblah is not only misunderstood but downright destructive to the very idea of aesthetics. The neoclassical imagery of vaporwave is simply a new generation finding beauty in Hellenistic sculpture. After all, Hellenistic sculpture *is* beautiful, no matter how much it triggers you for socio-political reasons.

A lot of vaporwave content is unfortunately ironic and meta-aesthetic where the presentation and audience are more interested in the idea of sculpture and katakana and early 3D and whatever being things that compose an "aesthetic". Shitwave, etc. and YouTube comments about le aesthetics. Why do you think Vektroid freaked out? Her art got turned into a big meme by idiots obsessed with irony.

What's the difference b/w Vaporwave and Synthwave
>>
>>60652469
Vaporwave is built largely from samples, and while Synthwave may have a similar sound it relies more on original electronic instrumentation.

Can anyone rec me something that isn't the lowest common denominator bullshit that started getting pumped out when the genre became a meme? I like pretty much anything Vektroid-related, as well as ░▒▓新しいデラックスライフ▓▒░, but outside of that, few things seem to have any staying power; pretty much every other artist I've heard seems like they just slow down/compress to Hell/loop anime and old music, and it's uninspired as fuck.

I hate to sound lazy, but geez, the whole genre's quality level seemed to tank once Tumblr got a hold of it. After that, pretty much every idiot with a laptop and their mother seemed to think they could take the latter's CDs and make A E S T H E T I C music that the Internet would eat alive.
>>
>>60655351
Have you tried ECCO UNLIMITED - NHK REMINDS YOU TO BOOST YOUR SIGNAL? It's made by the same person who made ░▒▓新しいデラックスライフ▓▒░ - ▣世界から解放され▣. It's similar in approach, but has a very different feel.
>>
>>60655351
Try this >>60650088
Don't just judge it by any one track. Pretty much every track has something different to offer.

>>60655684
First impressions are kind of mediocre, but hey, I'm trying to get back into the genre after a string of disappointment made me quit looking for new artists, so I'll give it a shot. It's certainly not bad, so if the other tracks have something a little different to offer, I might find something to like.

How does everyone feel about this album? I took a break from Vaporwave and when I came back someone described it to me as "genre-defining, on the scale of Floral Shoppe".

Personally, I think the album is a masterpiece, but I haven't really seen the publicity that Floral Shoppe got, especially since it is apparently of the same magnitude.
>>
>>60655996
Good album but I think it's proof that vaporwave has entered its latter days. Not really a vaporwave album.

The last genre-defining album we had was Dream Sequins, and it had to be viral marketed and literally sample memes to get hype
>>
>>60655351
Have you listened to Infinity Frequencies' stuff? He made a trilogy of albums called Computer Death, Computer Decay, and Computer Afterlife. It brings a very numb, miserable atmosphere throughout, which I really dig.
