Alright /mu/, since the last chart was old and outdated, lets make a more current and up-to-date version of the dad rocker's guide to modern music. What do you guys suggest?
>>
>>60520259
In the "real music is..." I suggest:

>Squarepusher- Feed Me Weird Things
>Wesseltoft Schwarz- Duo
>Underworld- Dubnobasswithmyheadman

Just some suggestions

Sufjan - Carrie and Lowell.

OPN - Replica

Death Grips - TPTB
The Knife - Shaking the Habitual

Dadrockers mostly think of all music from after 2000 as the modern era.
>>

Exmilitary is literally about all those things you just listed though

Voices From the Lake - s/t
Jam City - Classical Curves

Death Blues - Ensemble (DEFINITELY)
GY!BE - F#A#inf
Even with OPN, GoD or Replica are much better choices.
Jacaszek's Glimmer was good, too.
I'm hesitant to say shit like Liturgy because they're a very polarizing band. I liked the Ark Work, but many people will think it's shit, so it's probably not a good idea to put that on there.

>>60521066
I suggest removing Chuck Person's Eccojams, at least make sure we don't repeat artists. Instead of that I'd suggest

>Matana Roberts- Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile

Also I'd put Parquet Courts
>>
Oh yeah, if you're gonna include shit like TPAB, don't forget D'Angelo's Black Messiah.
>>
>>60521268
>I suggest removing Chuck Person's Eccojams, at least make sure we don't repeat artists
Good point.

OPN's mainline releases are better so if you're gonna have Lopatin go with Replica or GoD.
I feel like /mu/tants would like Replica more but Dadrockers would like GoD more, since it's more aggressive. It might just be me, but I get the feeling Dadrockers would hate that new age ambient aesthetic of Replica, whereas they might go "muh riffs yeah" when listening to bits of GoD.
>>
>>60521268
coin coin chapter two under what section?

Black Messiah isn't Rap, it's R&B. Replace it with Black Up I would say.
depends on your definition of Pop but I would add Julia Holter Loud City Song
>>
>>60521545
Yeah, no Black Messiah ought to be in the "lyrics" section
>>
>>60521527
Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel for pop.

>>
>>60521527
how about John Maus' We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves for the pop section?

Some suggestions:

>All pop is garbadge
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam

>Real music is made with instruments
The Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole
The Knife - Silent Shout
Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85 - 92
Aphex Twin - Drukqs
Autechre - Tri Repetae

>All the singers rely on autotune blah blah blah
Sufjan Stevens - whatever
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening

>Same recycled thing, no experimentation
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
Oneohtrix Point Never - R + 7
Oneohtrix Point Never - Garden of Delete

>Lyrics are meaningless
Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell
Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening

Some of them I stand by (Death Blues, Jacaszek), some of them I actually don't really care for but figured I'd include them anyway (HANL, Sunn O)))), Radiohead is pleb, sure, but this is a chart for Dadrockers, right? And sure, F#A#inf is /mu/core as well, but there's nothing wrong with it.

There's a difference between actually making a chart for Dadrockers and wanking your indie cred as hard as you can. I'm trying to help build the former, you'd rather do the latter. That's fine, you do you.

Nobody think they're profound, guy. I don't even know where you get that idea. They're just offering suggestions to make the damn chart. And yes, some of it is going to be /mu/core, and that's fine, considering dadrockers don't really listen to /mu/core.

Nah, I think there are better examples. I mean, I don't think it's really worthwhile posting stuff that could be found on an Urban Outfitters vinyl cart, since it's pretty mainstream and chances are the dadrocker may have heard it already.

Also, we're competing with shit like Led Zeppelin IV here. I think a standard rock band ensemble playing pop won't cut it under Dadrock standards. While maybe Radiohead would work as a pleb-tier band that's acceptable, in general we should probably avoid that "music based around guitars, bass, and drums" route, unless we're talking about Row 1.

I've only heard the Miraculous, which came out a few days ago, but I'm going to guess any of her other albums would fit the bill.

Her voice is great. That I can't deny. While I'm not a total fan of the instrumentation on the album, it's very rock influenced, so Dadrockers would be into it probably.

It's not a bad list, but I feel like we'd do a better job if we kept working on the chart OP's working on.

Also

>Rock
Really?
Also, I can't be convinced that Dadrockers would be into Nandacollection or Dataplex. They'd probably hate MBDTF, and SAW isn't that modern.
>>
>>60522875
Yeah, her singing is good, so there, especially since that section is still rather thin, no?

(Or under pop, or even rock. It could go under a number of sections, just put it where you think it would be apt, or you don't have enough suggestions.)

Shigeto's good, but I feel like Clark's Body Riddle would be a better choice.
Also, Glimmer by Jacaszek for experimentation (I consider it an electronic album myself, but I don't think it actually sounds electronic, but it's an album worth considering for the charts).

>>60523176

Yeah, but the whole point is to make dadrockers listen out of their comfort zone.

Shit like QOTSA, Kyuss, and EoDM are all in there. That's why having shit like that, or Foo Fighters, for example, is kind of a waste, since they probably like those bands.

Embarrassing

They're a decent band. Sure, a lot of it is filler, but they do have a number of stand out tracks, and TMS is a pretty good album. You're the pleb if you can't separate the memes from the music.

Also, they're probably the most respectable of the bands that mix rock and rap in any way after 2010, which says a lot about the genre, sure, but it's also a genuine reason why including them might be a good idea.
>>
>>60523367
what do you suggest?
>>
>>60523351
True, but I'd say that Like clockwork.. is close to being true rawk while still taking dadrockers out of their comfort zone whereas something like godspeed you black emperor is barely 'true rawk' anymore

Yeah, but it's at least fun updating it and including some more new music, as well as talking about these artists and albums.

>Sure beats the Miley fake tits and waifu threads, anyway.
This is a good thread, and you're doing god work, OP, but i have to disagree with you
>>
>>60523445
>>60523386
There was a thread the other day where someone posted the original chart and everyone was complaining that it was old and outdated. As a result I decided to try and update it with what /mu/ currently thinks belongs on it
>>
I really think we should include FlyLo's You're Dead! on the rap section. It's clearly not about gang violence or sex (shit like TPAB criticizes it, but Dadrockers might not be able to tell the difference…still, keep TPAB, though), and Kendrick has some damn good verses that would make people who say "Eminem is the only good rapper" a run for their money.
>>
>>60523318
Valid points, especially about the Earl Album. I think there might be room for both the Shigeto Album and Clark's Body Riddle in there, though I could be wrong.
>>
>>60523508
That's because the crowd who was on /mu/ when the chart was made have moved on
>>
>>60523520
I think Flylo fits better in other sections. Maybe in the real music section because of his instrumentals.
>>
>>60523492
Not the OP, but whatever.

Anyway, there's this album called Ola Sto Fos by Eleftheria Arvanitaki. It's a greek laika album, but Arvanitaki's singing is definitely great, and the few people on /mu/ who had recognized the album had nothing but praise to say for it. Since the good vocalists section is still rather thin, you might want to include it.

It's from 2004, by the way, and to non-Greek ears it sounds a bit like a trip-hop album, but not exactly. There's enough live instrumentation that Dadrockers would be into it.
>>
>>60523556
>Maybe in the real music section because of his instrumentals.
Well, isn't the point of the "real music" section to have albums that don't sound that live?
I mean, FlyLo has Herbie on You're Dead!, along with a bunch of other top-notch players, so it's definitely pretty live.
You're Dead would be better on Hip-hop, if you want FlyLo for electronics, Cosmogramma might be a better choice. Up to you guys, though.
>>
true rawk music is dead:
>The Soft Moon - s/t
>Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
>Primal Scream - More Light
>Steven Wilson - Hand Cannot Erase

real music is played with instruments, not pressing a button
>Gesaffelstein - Aleph
>Todd Terje - It's Album Time!

metal today is just 4:
>Deftones - Koi no yokan

pop
>How to Dress Well - What is this heart
>La Roux - Trouble in Paradise

rap is just about:
>RTJ - RTJ 2

today's music all the same no experimentation:
>These New Puritans - Field of Reeds

lyrics:
>The Drones - I See Seaweed

>>60523651
>So, no for Tame Impala, The Black Keys and Portugal. The Man too?
I think so. The Black Keys especially, they're famous for feuding with Jack White, and both are pretty much Dadrocker modern staples.

>>60523651
>rap is just about:
>>RTJ - RTJ 2
The thing here is that, while RTJ criticizes those rap tropes, Dadrocker's would just hear "put his dick in my mouth all day" and just assume it's about praising sex and violence, since they can't be bothered to tell the difference.
>>
>>60523651
Good albums

>>60523684
>Dadrocker's

Anyway, shit like Shabazz Palaces (already on the list) and FlyLo is good because they clearly avoid a lot of those tropes completely. They don't address it at all. Prefuse 93 is another good choice, though I'm not the biggest of fans for his music. I have "Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian", and it's pretty cool.
>>
>>60522969
OP just want to say that I don't agree with all of it but this is a much better chart already so please keep it up

Though to be fair Common's Like Water for Chocolate is worth putting in the chart, but replacing what we have for these pleb-tier hip-hop pics is rather asinine, especially if you expect Dadrockers to take people like Kanye seriously. The last three choices are alright, but not worth throwing out what we already have.

I honestly think that most people would agree that The College Dropout and Like for Chocolate are far better conscious albums than anything you have in your list as well.

Also TPAB doesn't manage to tackle any meaningful themes successfully other than Kendrick's depression, while GKMC is harshly critical of the gang violence that Kendrick brings up in the music which is more in line with that section of the chart. The tighter narrative in GKMC is exactly the reason that so many people consider TPAB to be overrated lyrically.

Well see, here's the thing: Dadrockers can't tell the difference between glorification and criticism. Yes, I like GKMC too, but TPAB is clearly the album version of "Oscar-baiting", and the fact that it relies on jazz instrumentation as opposed to more contemporary rap/trap influences means that Dadrockers are more likely going to be able to appreciate TPAB than GKMC.
