Is BoC ambient? I never thought of them as ambient, but I guess they kind of are.

I've been listening to almost exclusively ambient and soundtracks. Biosphere is where its at for me rn, though I've really been liking Eluvium, Loscil, even some not-so-ambient artists like Tim Hecker and Yellow Swans.

>>60378822
Stop caring about what is or is not ambient
It's a huge genre, basically anything fits
>>
>>60379370
I can agree with you, to a point; you have to admit that some stuff can't just be played in the background. Some stuff forces your attention.

The only reason I'm making a distinction at all is because I make ambient music. I make a conscious effort when I make music to make it not catchy. It's music that's not meant to be intently listened to - you just let it play and do something else, with the purpose of the music being to set a mood.

That's one interpretation
You can fit other styles in your music as you please... maybe it won't be ''100% ambient'' but I think that being tied up to a genre can censor you too much
I love catchy ambient
Ambient trance, ambient techno, ambient house, psyambient
Do I worry if it's not ambient enough to be called so? Honestly I don't care
>>
>>60379613
Have you heard of David Darling or Nils Frahm? I'm listening to Frahm's "Spaces" album right now (what.cd has a freeleech of it) and its really beautiful. Not exactly tons of strings like SotL but uses piano and electronics beautifully.
Also you might try out Rafael Anton Irisarri for more piano
>>
>>60379692
You do you bud. It's all up to personal interpretation in the end.

Are you into artists like The Field? That's what I think of when I think "catchy ambient." I don't really know about or care for all the sub-genres

I want samples
What are your favorite releases with sampling?

>>60379803
I like the 70s and 90s sound mostly
The 70s have the Berlin school, progressive stuff, Tangerine Dreamesque vibe, sometimes with nice percussion (TD from 77 - 78 was pretty good at this), even though that takes it more to the prog side
The 90s have the techno, early trance sometimes bits of idm in it too, some sampling... I like the artists on FAX a lot, so much variety
I used to listen to psybient a lot too, Ultimae stuff so Solar Fields, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Aes Dana
But yeah, I guess that what I think is that artists today should make an effort to see to how busy they can make their music to make it dreamy... I remember the first times I listened to CBL and all those well crafted layers, everything happening with such order and still made me float... If I were to make music that's what I'd look for

You might like Selected Ambient Works 85-92 or SAW II by Aphex Twin if you haven't heard it already. That and Surfing on Sine Waves. Check out "Tree" from SAW II.

Oh and to answer your question, I'd have to say Biosphere again; the album Microgravity has some really weird sci-fi film samples that give me chills.
>>
>>60380260
Just put Microgravity on
Yeah, this is gonna be good
I'm yet to listen to more Biosphere
I like his work as Geir Jenssen, both the field recording stuff and Fires of Ork (only part 2 actually, part 1 might get too repetitive)
He had one album this year, at least that I heard, with Deathprod
People said his last collab with him was better but I prefer this last one
So get that
It's on Touch, it's a nice label if you like minimal stuff and field recordings

I'm curious about your idea of "not catchy". I understand not forcing attention, but it's almost a pretty neat thing when you find an earwig in something you're not even completely paying attention to. I've had some tracks that get stuck in my head for weeks that I had put on while working on things.

Has anyone heard Goldmund's new album? I'm on track 11 of 17 and I think it's absolutely gorgeous. I think he's very good at adding and removing notes that would be expected in the melodies and progessions he plays, but leaves them absent to catch the listener off guard. Also, when a riff is completed and resolved, I feel the sense of relief is so much greater. The album is on Western Vinyl's Soundcloud currently.
>>
>>60382098
Drone definitely isn't catchy. Stuff like Stars of the Lid, to be specific - especially the album "The Tired Sounds of". That stuff isn't catchy, especially with songs where the transitions between notes are so long that you just stop paying attention. Or anything in Yellow Swans' "Going Places." Stuff like that is my idea of not catchy.

But there's definitely ambient-style music that's super catchy. Just listen to "A Ghost in Your Own Life" by Ulrich Schnauss. Not saying its a bad thing for "ambient" music to be catchy, but for me it becomes more than just stuff playing in the background - I want to hear it more.

I'm assuming this is Pete Namlook? Never heard it before but sounds pretty good so far
>>
>>60382894
Part 1 and 2 of this series are pretty nice, I'll have to check out that one
I'm listening to Namlook XIX - Music For Urban Meditation I
Honestly not very interesting
Free Your Mind from the Namlook series is amazing tho
That dude is seriously overlooked
>>
>>60382894
>>60383190
Shit, I don't know how I missed Namlook. Thanks guys
>>
>>60383035
Yes, Pete Namlook.

Part of a series titled 'Silence'. This is the last installment as well as the third solo album.

Silence one and two were a collaboration with Dr. Atmo. Once you finish Silence V I recommend you go II>I>IV>III, although in all honesty I think all five are some of the greatest ambient albums of all time.
>>
>>60383035
>>60383190
Isn't Namlook just great? Totally overlooked.

Recently downloaded S.H.A.D.O and enjoying it so far. Totally different from Silence or Dark side of the Moog however.

I've been listening to him a lot since I discovered him in February
Fires Of Ork, Dark Side Of The Moog, his works with Tetsu Inoue, with Bill Laswell, Dreamfish, Sultan, all great series
I can't imagine how he managed to make so much stuff
He must have about 500 albums with his name in only 20 years of work
>>
>>60382894
This is really amazing, I'm almost at the end
Thing about Namlook is that some of his stuff is incredibly cheesy, like Koolfang III
That thing made me so uncomfortable

When an artist makes this much music it's just impossible to not have at least one shitty release in their discography.

Pete's voiceover in 'Life/Death' and I think 'Asbendos' is one of the eeriest I've ever heard, but entirely fitting.
>>
>>60384590
The definition of ambient is up to the listener, but yeah I'd say this sure sets a mood, so I guess its ambient
