if anyone follows grime at all, you probably already know that mumdance, logos and shapednoise have played collaborative noise shows as the sprawl

first EP was released yesterday and it's pretty cool so far. there is much, much more grime influence here than in the live sets, though. kick drums and resonating square waves kind of punctuate the noise sections
>>
Why do you think Merzbow has become the poster-boy for noise? Why is his name synonymous with noise now? And why do you think he has been lauded in the first place?
>>
>>60374892
probably just how prolific he is, and the fact he was among the first noise acts in japan. merz worked incredibly hard - and still does - and had a solid community of likeminded friends for support
>>
>>60374615
yeah im going tonight. can't get there until about 7. wonder how big its going to be.

I don't follow grime much beyond an EP here and there but this has me interested. Thanks for posting about it, I'm gunna look into it.

>Why do you think Merzbow has become the poster-boy for noise?

because he was one of the first people to do it, or at least one of the first to do it within the parameters of what would go on to become recognized as contemporary noise, and because he broke a lot of new ground doing it and pioneered a lot of the vocabulary

>Why is his name synonymous with noise now?

because he's had more crossover outside his niche than almost anyone else in noise, and because he was deeply involved with the international noise network of artists, labels, listeners, distributors etcetera for a good while
sonic youth and relapse records are the primary parties responsible for why that crossover happened, i think

>And why do you think he has been lauded in the first place?

because he's made a lot of incredible and important work, though funnily enough most of that incredible work isn't among his most popular/notorious albums(at least the ones most popular/notorious with the public at large; i rarely ever see people who are deeply involved with noise cite venereology or pulse demon as particularly noteworthy merzbow albums)

Venereology is still one of his top 5 best harsh works though. Pulse demon is usually underrated by noise fans even if it isn't in his top 10 best albums.

Soundcloud-core noise is the fucking worst. Tryhard imagery that means nothing to you personally and that you haven't bothered to research, tracks cobbled together in 30 minutes, meaningless title that sound cool

Ban everyone who posts a SC link in these threads
>>
>>60377999

Why do you still troll here johnny
>>
>>60377999
i never understood why these threads attract such a large amount of subpar soundcloud and bandcamp spam when other generals are completely free of it most of the time

dudes seem to be riding the same "all this shit sounds the same anyway, who can even tell whether there was any effort put into it?" line of thinking that a lot of people who hate noise use to explain their hatred of it
>>
>>60378267
For fucks sake, stop fucking bringing him up every time someone posts something controversial. He's got a point in regards to some of the projects posted here from SoundCloud projects with no concept or direction or shit aesthetic that you can just tell wasn't thought out.
>>
>>60378337
>>60378347

It's not like any of them make any claims about their popularity or success
>>
>>60378400
Nobody said anything about popularity or success. Why is that suddenly a precursor for legitimate criticism against a form of art?
>>
>>60378437

I meant they aren't that obnoxious.
>>
>>60378488
Even so, it's not far out to be tired of seeing it all the time. Not to mention, if you're spending a lot of time in these threads as a fan of noise, it's going to be a little irksome to see people trying to be a part of the art without trying when you have a legitimate experience having something to compare to.
>>
Does anyone know of any "vapornoise?"
>>
>>60378488
I'd argue they're obnoxious in their ignorance. The fact they think these half-baked and naive ideas are worthy of marketing is pretty offensive.

I think noise artists should just stick to not giving shit more. I've released 8 things on BC in the past 2 months or so. Will people give me shit for it? Probably. Does the shit I get matter, and should it matter? Not to me.
>>
>>60378945
it's an understandable reflex

>>60379007
>8 things on BC in the past 2 months or so
why can't you understand that this is a problem
>>
>>60379047
You think it is is suppose.
Tell me why it is?
>>
>>60379068
1. you simply haven't spent enough time researching for and producing a release
2. you aren't sitting on your work for long enough before a release to gauge if it is actually worthwhile
3. you're alienating any kind of audience by default
4. noise is a convoluted and stagnant mess because of people like you
>>
>>60379133
I see and understand your points. But like I said in my earlier post, I don't really care. It's about creating the stuff I want and releasing it, and seeing if others like it. That's all for me. Reasons 1,2 and 4 are your opinion, and if people choose to react a certain way to my work, then so be it.

>>60379404
>Not even the poster you were replying to.
irrelevant
it was never agreed this general would not be like the rest of /mu/, but that seems to be what every general on here thinks they're superior to the rest of the board
the fact that you and anyone else getting mad that people spam their shit noise are the problem, control your spasms

>>60379133
>4. noise is a convoluted and stagnant mess because of people like you
critical or don't bother at all
ok this makes me sperg a bit myself, what a cringeworthy post
>>
>>60379465
>irrelevant

Actually very relevant considering you still seem to think I am the poster you were originally replying to with

>you and anyone else getting mad that people spam their shit noise

And how are any of the other posters, ones actually addressing things and generating thought, any less spastic than your facebook tier "kill yourself tbhfam"? And yes, we've had many discussions over the time of this general about how we weren't going to stoop to the shit quality of the rest of the board, and we were doing good too until a few months ago when retards like you started spamming tbhfam all over the place, regardless of context.
>>
>>60379221
>I don't really care. It's about creating the stuff I want and releasing it

EXACTLY. This is what it's all about, in my opinion. People creating art for any other reason...I dont get it.
>>
>>60379566

if you can't learn to tolerate and/or ignore that's your problem
>you still seem to think I am the poster you were originally replying to with

>>
>>60379133
Not really caring about either side of the argument going on, but Kevin Drumm has released 11 works this year & his audience is still strong. The amount of work released isnt really an argument to make.

Thats all I've got to say about any of this.
Ending this post on a question, what are your "sweet spots" in a noise album? That moment in an album you hear that you immediately think "oh yeah, this is my shit"?
>>
>>60379600
>ugh

Good argument
>>
>>60379614
The first metal/hinge-creak slam at the beginning of Seer of Decay

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3bBrmVluxI

It's probably the only album I've ever immediately loved from the very first second
>>
>>60379572
The thing the original poster was complaining about was not that the artists are creating what they want, it's that many of them consist of low effort releases, evident by a lack of dynamics or a lack of any effort in art/concept/aesthetic associated with it, and that releasing a bunch of full releases in a short amount of time (obviously this is not always the case), can be an indicator of low effort, thus low amount of care for the piece of art that they are creating. That combined with the above results in shitty art.
>>
>>60379658
seer of decay is so fucking good. gutter absolutely crushed me, the feedback screeches in that sound like some kind of otherworldly howl. i can imagine that's the kind of sound an animal makes before it dies

what else should i checking out by grunt? this is the only output of his i've heard but i've listened to SoD front to back at least a dozen times by now
>>
>>60379614
>"sweet spots" in a noise album
it's a weird thing to say, but the end of a HNW album when it suddenly cuts to silence is always super interesting to me. It makes me realize what an odd metal state I was in and I feel a sort of absence.
>>
>>60379961
>what else should i checking out by grunt?

installation of blood and steel
petturien rooli
last grip to sanity
terror and degeneration
the split with prurient
the collaboration with gelsomina
the dead beauty/dancefloor wreck 7"

grunt has quite a large discography though, and i haven't heard all of it
these are just the highlights of what i've heard

and speaking of grunt, did that one anon who owns a copy of the grunt/macronympha split LP ever get around to doing a proper rip of it? the one that's floating around on slsk is fucked
