I only liked metal for a short period, but I'm not bitter enough to make threads about it. I got bigger fish to fry.

Grew out of it about 18ish, then listened to some more and realized that I only grew out of bottom-of-the-barrel METAL PURIST bullshit and I can now enjoy various subgenres of metal alongside other genres.

I'm not a metalhead, but I still listen to metal. Is there something wrong with that?

Currently it's mostly black metal, traditional and experimental (in the lines of Ved Buens Ende and Thy Catafalque) and some cavernous death metal, but I have a soft spot for traditional heavy metal and thrash as well.
>>
Better question: When did you grow out of being closeminded about music?

/co/ is actually the most easy-going board on 4chan. Whenever I'm feeling down, I browse /co/ for some pos-vibes.

I used to listen to a ton of metal from ages 12-15 but then started discovering a broader horizon of genres and almost completely stopped listening to metal.
Now 5 years later I still occasionally listen to some metal (black, sludge, prog, industrial, drone) but mostly other stuff.
However I've never seen any kind of need to post on an anonymous imageboard about not listening to metal.

>>
at what age did you grow out of growing out of metal
>>
haha this desu. >>60358494
i thought i grew out of metal in highschool. i started listening to indie and hip hop exclusively (which i still like) then i grew the hell up and realized i should listen to what i enjoy and not only what has the most positive social stigma
>>
>>60358632
>i'm not a pleb
>i somewhat enjoy soad

wew

honestly though i think the reason why so many millennials have such a strong hatred for metal is because they were raised during the horrible metalcore/buttmetal revolution. this conditioned them to think that all metal is bad. every time i try to talk to a peer about metal, the only bands they know are soad, korn, disturbed, and slipknot. like honestly guys metal is more than the shitty metalcore you were raised on
>>
>>60358700
I think SOAD is wrongfully lumped together with bands like Korn or Slipknot or generic metalcore bands. For a long time I avoided their stuff because of the stigma but when I finally gave them a chance I learned that musically they are nothing alike.
>>
>>60358700
This.

I've grown to hate indie rock for the same reasons, I never liked nu metal growing up, and bland indie shit has turned me onto raw lofi punk rock and metal with similar production.
>>
>>60358812
this
>>
>>60358700
Or maybe metal is just bad. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the whole
>muh brutal
>muh darkness
kills it.
I can appreciate some of the technicality involved, but I don't like the genre because it sounds like shit, and basically is shit because what I stated above is basically all there is to it.
My brother is into metal and hoes tried to explain it to me before, but if anyone feels they can do better, I invite you to enlighten me.
>>
>>60355096
>people think they ''grow out'' of genres

if you ''grow out'' of shit you were never into it the first place

the sad thing is that you're gonna say the same thing for the music you like now when you get into the so called ''intellectual'' music''

this is b8 but whatever i'm bored
>>
>>60355096
I think when I was 16 was the last year when I still regularly listened to metal.

It was mostly post-metal like Isis and Pelican though, I moved away from more traditional metal with vocals when I was like 14

Now I listen 90% to electronic music of different types
>>
>>60358928
>muh brutal
>muh darkness
>kills it.

I understand the brutal thing, but how does the muh darkness kill it?

It isn't as if all art that deals with dark themes is bad. So why is metal bad for this reason?
>>
>>60358928
What have you looked into to get the >muh darkness >muh brutal -impression?
>>
>>60358928
>muh brutal
>muh darkness

like wtf m8? that is literally just a small portion of specific metal genres. have you literally listened to only slipknot and korn ever?
>>
>>60358928
not even bullshitting. try reading hunter hunt hendrix's black metal manifesto. it sort of explains the desire to be as dark and extreme as possible.
it's on page 53, but honestly the entire pdf could probably help explain some things to you
http://www.radicalmatters.com/metasound/pdf/Hideous.Gnosis.Black.Metal.Theory.Symposium.I.pdf

on the other hand, there's plenty of metal which isn't concerned with being as extreme as possible. heavy, stoner and doom are all about groove. listen to this shit
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=My8T8vTYaZ8
>>
>>60359017
Metal deals with dark themes in such a juvenile way that is just offputting

>>
>>60359003

>>
>>60359095

>>
>>60359017
I'm all for darkness in art; I love it, in fact. But, I've always felt that metal tried/pushes it too hard.
Like that kid in middle school who'd go to the park and sit in the corner sulking and then tell people to fuck off if they asked him to come play as if he didn't want friends, as opposed to the kid who sat by himself at lunch, sad, because he just legitimately didn't have friends despite his efforts.

>Metal deals with dark themes in such a juvenile way that is just offputting

This is exactly why I dislike metal lyrics most of the time. See >>60358108
There is no tact behind them most of the time.

However, this doesn't mean that all metal is like this, it's the stuff that takes its image too seriously and uses phoned-in writing that irks me.

It's fine music most of the time so long as they shut up and play heavy riffs.

But why strive to be as dark and extreme as possible? It feels manufactured as a opposed to a genuine representation of whatever pushed the artist to write the song.

>>
Is /mu/ still all about black/doom/death metal like it was in 2012 or have people started discussing melodic stuff as well these days? I'm guessing that the one sided representation that at least used to take place here is what has given people a specific impression of the genre. Either it's the black/death/doom you see on /mu/ or the nu/core/shit the radio plays.
>>
>>60359287
people that listen to metal are generally retarded and underdeveloped so they glorify the most edgy/brutal/dark/ metal with least amount of melody or other likeable qualities

Haven't yet

I don't understand "I used to like metal and then I switched to..." people

I used to like metalcore/deathcore a lot. I don't like those much anymore, but I listen to a -core album every now and then

After I stopped liking metalcore so much I got into black metal and then basically everything else (hip-hop, ambient, noise/p.e., punk/rock, indie shit, &c.) but I still listen to more black metal than anything

If you ever 100% grow out of a genre you are a poser shithead who listens to music for perceived prestige or to label yourself or something

>Black metal is lunar, atrophic, depraved, infinite and pure

There are much better ways to explain this. If there is any explanation of metal without needlessly convoluted fag shit, I'd happily read it, but this really seems like it's trying too damn hard to sound esoteric and deep.

>>60360788
Metal rocks (not in the sense that means it's good), it doesn't have groove. It's not smooth enough to have groove, it's very visceral and angry. I really don't want to take the time to explain it further. I've tried before and it does not work.
>>
>>60361453
Tastes do change, anon. Not necessarily for perceived prestige as you mentioned; sometimes in the context of a certain period of one's life a certain kind of music is more appealing. When this context ends you "grow out" of that music.
>>
I grew out of metalcore, power and thrash metal and grew into progressive, black and death metal

>>60361581

Glad I grew out of that at 18. Now I listen to a lot of great stuff and I still enjoy a few metal songs but mostly I love looking outside of many genres. As I listened to more music I also realized how shitty a lot of metal is and it's very overrated and yeah, the edginess wears off as you get older.

idk why you are still insisting on generalizing all metal. do you realize how stupid you sound when you try to assert that every metal song ever has 7 guitar tracks? a lot of metal is extremely sparse
