this is a classic desu
i'd write one of my small reviews but desu i just find it good on a very subjective level impossible to really explain in words (like all Burzum albums i like)

i find the riffs very empathic

While everyone knows Filosofem and De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas are surface level BM, imo they're in that position because they simply cannot be topped. They are the epitome of black metal/

I've never really been able to get into Panopticon's stuff outside of Kentucky.
Roads to the North had some great stuff but for some reason I'd expect for the album to be halfway done and it's still on the first song; it goes on waaaay too long and is overly dense,
Autumn Eternal was getting good reviews, and I enjoyed it enough while listening to it but couldn't tell you a thing about it if you asked me afterwards.

Kentucky felt like it was very focused and had a concise pattern (bluegrass/metal/bluegrass/metal) as opposed to trying to combine the two in varying ratios and coming up short sometimes.
>>
>>60340467
I honestly believe that DMDS is the best black metal album of all time and it would never be topped if attila was slightly louder on a few songs
>>
>>60340467
filosofem is too atmospheric to be representative of the entire genre of black metal

also mayhem is too overrated
>>
>>60340490
Kentucky is the only good album. Don't bother listening to the other stuff.
>>
Okay so someone recommended me Urfaust a while ago and though I'm REALLY getting into them (I mean shit it's really good not gonna lie) I'm kind of having trouble seeing how they're black metal outside of the guitar tone and the visual aesthetic. Sounds like it has more in common with doom metal to me.
>>
>>60340467
DMDS is essential "more influential than good", they were the embodiment of the 2nd wave Norwegian deal and the legends about all of the members are interesting but the music itself is just boring compared to other BM bands, even those of the same scene (Bumbum, Emperor)

This is basically an essential album at this point people

>post-rock and shoegaze elements make for a really good and varied sound
>definitely still a black metal album overall
>controversial
>popular: weren't the first one's to try stepping out of black metal's traditions, but they sure were the first one's to do it very successfully/well

If you don't like it fine, but it's a big album for the genre in my opinion.

Okay, I know this. that's the way atmosphere fucking started in black metal. it wasn't this faggot ass synth and shoegaze shit or uplifting bright guitars. nowadays no one gives a fuck about actually making metal and just make some terrible faggot music that everyone in these threads fucking loves.

It's no surprise that some people appreciate that stuff. Even as far back as the Darkthronian 2note tremolo passages staple you could say black metal is mostly driven, at its core, around melodic progressions. This is most evident in Tranny Hunger and the bands influenced by it. The funny thing is Darkthrone also delved in riff-based/centric black metal as well, be it in a thrashy or punky fashion. A Blaze and UAFM are more representative of this.

This is basically this dichotomy that people hype up. Bands like Emperor and the whole atmo black movement embraced the developing melodic progressions aspect more and so you get bands like Memenight Odyssey today. Then there's other bands that embraced a more riff-centric approach to black metal like Marduk or whatever.

What I'm trying to say is, no one side is "better" than the other, and they're both black metal. People like one style over the other, or they favor one style more than the other, or they like and appreciate both.

Fenriz has it totally right. Bands that came along and ONLY emulated the atmosphere of BM got it wrong. Perhaps a lot of people do not understand its roots in thrash, death metal, punk, etc. and thus think it needs to be "pretty." The dichotomy of harshness and melody is what makes black metal great, atmosphere is a byproduct.

underrated as fuck.

All it needed was a better album artwork. Something that really conveys the feel of the music inside so that nobody gets into it with the wrong expectations, because I think that's exactly what happened.

If it had a similar album cover to Esoteric Warfare I think it wouldn't have disappointed as many people. Ironically, Esoteric Warfare, while more technical and with an interesting approach of silence as an instrument, is much less characterful than this one, and would probably have been improved by the use of martial drumming, industrial elements and the occasional rapping.

Lemmy Kilmister has come out as bi-sexual

"People have difficulties overcoming guilt", Lemmy said, "One thing that makes us feel guilty is our sexuality. I know many good people who are gay or bisexual, and I'm proud to say that I can Rock and booze with the best of them. Why? Well, because I am one."

You heard right, Lemmy has decided to come clean and spill the truth out to all his fans.

"My sexual urge for females was always a driving force to the music. Songs like 'Limb From Limb' and 'Make My Day' were written as odes to the female body. But sometimes we, as men, can not always find females to be the more... err... nourishing gender sometimes. Y'know what I mean? Sometimes this... feeling takes you over and you wanna experiment and try out new stuff. I am proud of being a bisexual, and this still doesn't mean I don't want a little bit of p**** on the side (laughs)."

"Prejudices are always hard to break. But I don't give a shit about what others think of me. Motorhead has never been about the critics. It's all the music. Just because I enjoy some guys doesn't mean jack. I still churn out the music every fucking night, all the fucking time. I am proud of my fans, and they know that I always give 100%."

Rock n' Roll, and in particular Metal has always been a rather macho genre. However, with legendary musical icons like Rob Halford (JUDAS PRIEST) and Freddy Mercury (QUEEN) admitting to being homosexual, the stereotypes have been stripped down. Lemmy's coming out may come as a shock, but can we deal with it? The man certainly can.

"I love you guys. No innuendo intended!"

You heard it here first lads

Most of the black metal I like creates a landscape or scenario in my mind's eye. Usually one of profound bleakness or loneliness.

This Managarm album transports me to a cold ocean. I'm standing on the prow of a ship, during a storm. The wind is screaming in my ears, the icy spray and rain cutting through my leathers and mail. I know there's 30 other men on the ship with me, as well as 20 slaves and a hold full of booty ... but right now, in the storm, I'm alone on the prow of the ship. I can't see five feet in front of my face. It's a bleak, lonely world ... but I enjoy it. It's almost zenlike. I hunch up my leathers and furs and create a little hole of warmth amidst the freezing wind and rain. I know we'll be home soon ... I'll see my son, and my wife, enjoy a feast and a fire and song with my brothers, revelling in our successful raid.

This one is a similar scene.

I'm on a cold hillside, in the middle of a snowstorm. Again, the wind is screaming in my ears - all I can hear is the howl of the wind and the crunch of my fur boots in the snow. I trudge between the dead trees, knee-deep in the soft wet cold. My arms are full of firewood and kindling - we are running low. This winter has been colder than we expected. I look forward to being home - it's not much farther. There is stew over the embers of the fire, and the logs I'm bringing home will keep us warm for at least as long as the storm lasts. I'll eat the stew, and lay down with my woman on the furs in front of the fire. And rest.

Am I allowed to play non BM music when I'm with friends drinking?

I tried playing Ulver and although they liked it, it doesn't really work in this situation.

Hey friends, the only black metal that I've heard that I really, really enjoy is The Ruins of Beverast, particularly his first two albums. Is there anything else similar to this that I might like?

>>
>>60354616
check some german bands like kermania and verdunkeln
maybe you'll be into weakling and their, more recent (and superior) project, dispirit
or the cascadian faggots (ash borer, fell voices)

Should I check out Satyricon?

also you might find something you like through the band he has collabed with, especially urfaust
so get those collabs, if nothing else his tracks on them are amazing, you can have them on their own by downloading the enchanted by gravemold compilation

That seemed to suggest a interpretation of the concept, especially the lyrics. Not the music.
