I'm actually amazed at how much they managed to keep the Cryptopsy charm. Matt had a much more sporadic, crazy Worm-like style on this EP (not saying his voice is like Lord Worm's but he's definitely taken a lot more inspiration from him this time) and while Chris will never be as good as Jon, he does a very nice job imitating him while Olivier sounds like the best bassist they've ever had.

I particularly like the similarities between this and And Then You'll Beg. I feel like they took that style and made it heavier and more accessible.

>>60291987
>heavier and more accessible

Heavier basically means super-computerized, triggered to death and overproduced, and more accessible translates to forgettable and generic riffs.

The thing about Cryptopsy that I always loved, that they really straddled the line well between tech-death wankery and extreme metal, by having a sort of damaged quality to their sound. Obviously Lord Worm added the majority of that sound, as he has a unique, and unpolished approach to dm vocals. Jon, likewise, contributed weird riffs and patterns not for the sake of "dude so technical bro" but because it really reflected the insanity of the whole concept in general.

Even Whisper Supremacy, had that weird vibe to it. It was tech-death for sure, but something about it was off, which was really cool.

I just don't feel that way about new Cryptopsy with Matt & Chris. Even though Tome 1, is pretty good for a tech-death album, I've a feeling that I'm gonna forget about this release pretty quickly, just like the last couple of records they put out.

But I still blast blashempy, none, whisper and then you'll beg on a regular basis.

one could argue that the "damaged" quality comes out of poor songwriting and the parts not connecting well with each other, but that never bothered me much as long as the individual parts are good, this "damaged" quality can be attributed to most tech-death today I believe

>>60294153
Well yeah, that's the thing about tech-death, that rarely you see a band that does a good song flow in this sub-genre and doesn't just focus on gluing riffs together, but I feel that older Cryptopsy had (to some extent) a better song flow, or vibe, call it what you will.
The recent albums to me are even more disjointed and nonsensical, albeit some individual riffs are really fun.

Anyone here in/ used to be in a metal band? How was it?

I am going to record some old skool, lo-fi black metal with the sound you would expect from old burzum, darkthrone and mayhem albums, as opposed to the newer WITTR/Agalloch style.
This is just for my own fun and it's a solo project as there is nobody else near me to do this stuff, but if it turns out good I will share it with you guys for free.

I like Volume 4 the best.

Ozzy Osbourne's lyricism, in particular his rhymes come off pretty clumsy in a lot of places on the first three records, Master of Reality in particular, but he feels a lot more natural as a lyricist on volume 4.

I know both of those, but don't care for either all that much. In general i find metalcore a bit iffy, but i love this album and also Protest the Hero - Fortress and Scurrilous. Anything more in that vein?
>>
>>60304016
Ah, that's a shame. I enjoy both those bands.
I don't know about Protest the Hero though. I don't listen to them or bands similar to them. Sorry m8

I Omega are basically an exact clone of PTH, and The Human Abstract are quite similar too. I also think you'd like Corelia and Dioramic.

For Protest the Hero kind of stuff try I Omega (literaly PtH 2.0 they even have a occasional female vocals that sounds like Jedea Kelly from hair trigger etc.) or Fox Territory

progressive blackened thrash

there's not a whole lot that sounds too much like vektor but they're often cited as a blackened Voivod

Am I the only faggot here who actually can interpret colors and emotions from some of Meshuggah's music?

Like, throw on Closed Eyed Visuals.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_tndxTuouY
The concise diminished scale patterns, the notes of which have a jagged angularness, legit make me feel creeped and weirded out. Coupled with the concept of the lyrics being about external reality being a dream and shit, and this song gives me the fucking goosebumps and anxiety...

That's an emotion if I have anything to say. I'll never really get why people just interpret Meshuggah as purely 'mechanical'. Chaosphere is understandable, but Nothing, I, and Catch Thirtythree are anxiety-riden wormholes

They're basically doomy metalcore, so in a way yes. The butt-doom vocals kill it for me and chuggy riffs. There's definitely potential in the style that they're going for, but TT aren't doing it right imo.
>>
>>60303742
I never understood any hype around them. Just your next death metal band, sometimes pretty techy, sometimes pretty proggy, but overall nothing special. I guess I kinda enjoyed cosmogenesis, but never went back to it.
