got 70 MB now though, and I'm still in shock about it. I'm uploading .wavs in seconds versus several minutes.

someone last week mentioned something that made me stop and think.

I'm sure he has some wealth, but look at the backlog he's given away. Most of this work is from 89-95, a time where he could of sold any of it for a pretty penny and made even more.

I've listened to most of this and I wouldn't say there is anything really that bad in the 100+ tracks. He could of easily released twice as much as he had back then and sold off others as remixes. I think he actively avoided selling out, he was obviously more focused on progressing his sound and following the stuff that excited him.

Richard gets a bad name from his pranks but it's obvious he never took advantage of record buyers.

I doubt it, there would be much more interest in his new stuff, at the very least enough to make it commercially viable. They don't own his tracks anyway but even so, you don't think think is boosting a much wider interest in his discography and therefore catalogue sales? I've been listening to more released Aphex Twin stuff this week than I have in the last few years. This isn't doing them any harm whatsoever. People need to learn that piracy or even giving stuff away doesn't equal commercial loses, actually quite the opposite.

That was basically what a good chunk of '90s techno was, anon. I don't really like it either (techno in general; it sounds lifeless), but RDJ at least found a way to make it fun to listen to. This newly uploaded stuff it pretty damn early, too.

I enjoy some of his work. I just don't like how abstract some of it is. I like other dance/electronic music but not ambient or acid I guess. I was just wondering what the process of writing ambient tracks is. I guess you can write out the bassline and melodies but not the rest. Its just an alien concept to me. Like I said, I'm not trying to be shocking or a special snowflake. Im just wondering how you make ambient/trance music. Specifically Aphex Twin because he's the big name. I understand kinda how you can write house music and electronica seeing as those do follow scales but I can't wrap my ears around the patterns and hooks. They just sound unstructured I guess
>>
>>53337731
Very well could be. Sounds very syro/drukqs-ish
>>
>>53337550
If you find these tracks alien in structure, fuck knows what you'd make of newer Autechre or something.
There's just a lot of ways to approach electronic music composition. It's nothing mysterious, just musicians employing different technologies to get different results.

Oh nice, just listening to 33 jonny hawkes broken guitar[not finished] and noticed how much it sounds like Come To Daddy [Little Lord Faulteroy Mix], obviously without the bass/guitar part.

He's a subtly good composer, esp if you're fluent in dance music, he makes odd little choices that stand out
To me anyway

The orchestral patches definitely bring to mind the ones he used in the mid 90s, especially on RDJ Album. If I had to place Sekonda I'd say he probably produced it around the time he was doing MfM.
>>
>>53337789
If you couldn't tell I'm not fluent in dance music. My idea of dance music is Daft Punk and Talking Heads. I've been trying to get into Aphex Twin but its just not clicking. This is me attempting to broaden my horizons

Why would you listen to unreleased stuff if you're trying to get in to him? Listen to his released stuff, there are many styles so go through them all. If you don't like them then you don't like them, it's no big deal, don't be such a try hard.

Start with Selected Ambient Works I and just listen to that for now. Like more than once

I have no idea what the fuck you're even talking about. You should just drop some acid or take some shrooms, sounds like you have some seriously uptight issues to get over.
>>
>>53337936
Aphex Twin doesn't really make dance music. His stuff is mostly stuff for the head, not the feet. I would suggest getting into dreamlike feelings. Stop being so in the moment. At least some of the time.

re: ITS JUST COMPUTER NOISES? WTF???? WHERE THE MUSIC!?

i have a theory.

you know those times you'll be listening to a track and you forget where the loops (pads, drum breaks mostly) start and end? you've heard the track a million times before but this time it sounds completely different because you're 'out of sync' with it.
it almost sounds like someone's gone in and replaced the track with a remix that replaces the snare with a kick, the kick with a snare, and moved the fills out of place entirely.

those who have experienced this will know what i'm talking about. it's pretty surreal when it happens.

i think that's what a lot of the people who don't 'get' aphex/"IDM" experience. maybe they're just not used to the way electronic music tracks tend to progress/build. maybe they're too used to a voice/lyrics 'guiding' them on where the other segments of the track start/finish/loop. that's my guess anyway.

if ur interested, this track has caught me out a few times. i've heard a handful of "different versions" over the years (when really i haven't):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84UMaoouJOE

get a grasp of the break/programming (listen to the whole track a few times if you've got the time), then listen to it again and try to 'place' the beginning of the loop at a different point in a time.
>>
>>53338030
What's wrong with that?

>>53338027
The process of writing ambient music. Does he have notebooks filled with ideas or does he sit at his setup and do what comes into his head and run with it. >>53338015

or maybe he's still tinkering with them

just rip them with a converter for now in case they all get deleted and download them later if he allows downloads
>>
>>53338142
Is this what you're talking about? try to off-sync with this

www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRk2_DNsJp8

It has a completely different mood depending on where you perceive the 'start' of the percussion loop to be. It's like the spinning woman gif you can mentally shift
>>
>>53338129
Like, I skimmed them. It was a while ago. What are you referencing? Anyway dude, I think most people could agree that a sizeable chunck of his catalog is not that dance-able. Unless you're spastic/and or sluggish and in your room alone, in which case you're right, and I do that all the time.
>>
>>53338182
Oh right
Well it's a really complicated pop record

I mean, it is, right?
>>
>>53338170

>>53338208
shit it's not the percussion that off-shifts, but still

>Anyway dude, I think most people could agree that a sizeable chunck of his catalog is not that dance-able.
You sound painfully insecure.

Everything with a clear rhythm is extremely danceable dude. My suggestion for you is to drop the insecurity, stop trying so hard to fit in and enjoy the music for what it is.
>>
>>53338234
My area of music interest is mainly blues and rock based. Maybe I should've worded it differently. At least superficially ambient and trance music is very different than the music I listen to so I was wondering if the process of writing it was as different as the results.
>>
>>53338313
>I was wondering if the process of writing it was as different as the results.
Of course they are. You don't write a folk song the same way you do drum and bass.
>>
>>53338098

Beautiful, thank you
>>
>>53338387
And I was just wondering what the process is
>>
>>53338424
60% the time it's improvisation
>>
>>53338424
Play a synth until you find something you like. Develop it, explore textures, chords and rhythm. Record it, mix it and go to town creating further interest and texture in the production stage. It is all one long process, the mixing and production as much of a creative part as choosing the chords to use.
>>
>>53337311
Autechre CAN'T do something like this. Sean (or Rob, can't remember which one) said in that huge WATMM Q&A that Warp owns everything they make, unless they get permission to release it, or release it as Gescom. They also said they get paid a pretty penny for that exclusivity.
>>
>>53338142
i totally feel you on this, it happens a to me a lot with music i've made

i've also been listening to SAW1 a lot lately, and one of the tracks i'd heard one way for years flipped on me and now i can't get it back. it's great though.
>>
>>53338303
I do enjoy the music for what it is. I don't dance in public though because I don't understand what constitutes "good" dancing, so maybe I'm not so secure in that sense, but I am secure in my opinions. Fuck, I'll say that no music that I enjoy is really dance music because I don't understand how to move my body to music in a way that isn't strange and idiosyncratic. I dig it though. How do you dance to drill n' bass? It's not predictable. Maybe I misinterpret dance as performance. Like, improvisational performance. The average person can't groove to Girl/Boy the first time they hear it.
>>
>>53338533
>Gescom
Wow I didn't even know that existed. Is much of it worth checking out?
>>
>>53338533
