What is your favourite city pop album?
Mine is pic related.
i'm confused between the distinction between city pop and shibuya kei cause i've seen so many mislabelled thing, like the only thing i know that seems to be definitively city pop of late is especia

city pop is/was a subset of J-pop mostly associated with the mid '70s - late '80s. theres sort of a reflection of the positivity of the bubble economy and huge influences from soft 'cheesy' jazz fusion and adult oriented rock. production wise it used a lot of then trendy now dated sounds often associated with '80s pop music

shibuya-kei was more of a '90s trendy pop/rock that was heavily influenced by '60s psych pop, ye ye, mpb, etc. it was sort of an eclectic amalgamation of various western pop styles refracted through a Japanese lens. because it pulled from such diverse genres, the music is a bit harder to pinpoint as having one unified sound.

I like you mootkips. Mine is either that or pic related even though it's a recent 'city pop revival' album.
I have mad love for city pop with 90's r'n'b influences, like the newest especia.
Got to go with the boring choice, it just has lots of variety, good musicianship and the final track is genuinely touching. It's both unintentionally funny and great at the same time.
Tatsuro Yamashita has good singles and great live recordings but his albums just are pretty boring as a whole IMO.

Also this. Mishio Ogawa is usually associated with her art pop and avant-garde projects, but even though this album is one of her later works, it seems to take a lot of influence from city pop artists and world music.
Her other stuff is great too if you're into this sort of stuff a lot.
Haniwa-Chan, Wha ha ha and Chakra are great projects aside from her solo work. This album and the next one she put out are my favourites

Generally yes because there's always a lot less cocaine involved. Also like >>54964701 said, there's bad stuff, it's just much harder to find, mostly due to the language barrier.

Is there a name for that really awful pop with the angular opening riffs and ADHD level samples that pretty much defined the sound of anime openings for years? I'm not up on my J-pop, but some of that Megumi Hayashibara sound is what I'm thinking of.

It's not exclusive to anime, but anime OPs are loaded with it. It fell out of favor a few years ago, but was a pretty defining sound of really hyperkinetic j-pop for quite a while. I can hear the origin in shibuya-kei, only sped up and made more electronic.

I honestly think it was just limited to anime OST's. it's classic jpop with stupid synthesised metal parts. I have a few OST's that i really like from the mid 80's and you can tell that as time goes on, they keep pushing towards the sound you're describing

Now that I think about it, the first time I heard that kind of sound full force was Excel Saga, but I swear I've still heard it pop up in mainstream j-pop in a more subtle form.

Now that I think about it, I think that city pop is overall a very single dominated genre, like so many other 80s pop genres. Nothing wrong with that though, considering power pop and italo disco are some of my fav genres. I wish there was more live recordings (of any artist) around because the musicians were technically very good and the songs usually have lots of space for jamming.
