Jonathan Kreisberg- Nine Stories Wide (2004)

>post-bop, modal jazz
>A departure from his quintet and his original compositions, this album features Krieisberg in a guitar trio setting and playing mostly new interpretations of jazz standards. Despite the somewhat “straight-ahead” nature of this record, Kreisberg’s tone and unmistakable chromatic approach to improvisation make this a very enjoyable listen.

>piano trio, straight ahead jazz
>A live recording from the Village Vanguard that captures one of the few collaborations between Bill Evans and Philly Joe Jones, with his common bassist, Eddie Gomez. They run through mostly standards, some which were seldom performed/recorded by Evans. The playing here is unusually energetic and extroverted compared to Evans' normal style.

Eddie Henderson- Phantoms (1994)

>post-bop
>Eddie Henderson was known mostly for his fusion work in the 70’s (in Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi group), but here he goes for a more straight-ahead sound, while still keeping an adventurous sense of group interplay and improvisation. The group plays several 60’s standards (Dolphin Dance, Naima, Milestones) but also does several original tunes.

Alex Sipiagin- Mirages (2009)

>post-bop
>For those not familiar with Sipiagin, he’s one of the most gifted trumpet players and composers on today’s jazz scene. This is one of his more straight-ahead records. This music is very much influenced by the 70’s recordings of Woody Shaw and Freddie Hubbard, largely due to the inclusion of pianist Mulgrew Miller, who often played with Shaw. There’s a very high energy level throughout the whole record.

Harry Partch- Delusion of The Fury
>microtonal music, 20th century classical, opera

Harry Partch was an American composer who, having decided that Bach, polyphony, 12-tone scales, and abstract music were all evil, proceeded to build his own musical language almost entirely from scratch, utilizing a bizarre 49-tone scale, instruments he built himself, and influences from oriental and ethnic music to create some of the strangest, most idiosyncratic music you may ever hear. This recording is considered by many to be his masterpiece: a 72-minute long microtonal opera.

Metal Urbain- L'âge d'or
>synthpunk, punk rock, compilation

Compilation of most of the output of this early French synthpunk band who, apparently taking cues from Suicide, used a synthesizer and a drum machine in the place of a bassist and drummer. Interesting mix of early punk with weird, conflicting drumbox rhythms and screeching synth noises.

Hank Jones - Relaxin' at Camarillo
http://www56.zippyshare.com/v/KlzA61jP/file.html

for this 1956 quartet session, Hank Jones is supported by two giants, Paul Chambers on bass and Kenny Clark on drums, and by the Belgian sax and flute player Bobby Jaspar (who only plays flute here). they deliver a quality set navigating between cool jazz and hard bop

Freaked-out, proto-kraut Swedish psychedelic band that existed for something like two years in the late 60s. Long, repetitive, drugged-out, droning jams to space out to.

Roland Guerin - Live at the Blue note
http://www70.zippyshare.com/v/KosveZWP/file.html

post bop, for this date bassist Roland Guerin was surrounded by a sextet of which I know nothing about, but who does its job well : Brice Winston on tenor sax, Derek Douget on alto sax, Antonio Gambrell on trumpet, Frederick Sanders on piano and Donald Edwards on drums. the record is composed of two standards (All blues and Autumn leaves) and five original compositions by Guerin, some co-written with his mother, who appears to be a bassist as well
>>
>>54744775
Brice Winston and Donald Edwards are both great. Winston has played with Terence Blanchard for years and Edwards is pretty in demand as a sideman in NY and just released a pretty good album last year.

nice, imma try Evolution of an influenced mind since I like Orrin Evans and Walter Smith III. also it appears I already heard him on Misha Tsiganov - The artistry of standard, but I didn't remember his name. thanks for the info !
>>
>>54744999
Yeah he plays on a few other Orrin Evans records, a very good Conrad Herwig one, and in the Opus 5 group too.

He's also the current drummer for the Mingus big band I believe.

Music from two basses is good too, but I found it overwhelming at times. if you enjoy solo bass, you can also take this one

Henry Grimes - Solo
http://www59.zippyshare.com/v/ZOpl6p82/file.html
http://www50.zippyshare.com/v/B6tmde1d/file.html

solo improvisation on bass and violin from 2008 by this great master. during the two hours and a half he plays, he switches the instruments and manages to never get boring despite the length
>>
>>54748692
Really appreciate it, solo instrumentation is great for me just to hear some of the sounds they create, most of which i enjoy but some higher reed instruments are to much, i couldnt make it though Evan Parkers conic sections it was just migraine inducing

also reposting some free improv stuff mostly found on slsk:

Misha Tsiganov- Artistry of the Standard (2014)

>post-bop
>Russian-born pianist Misha Tsiganov recorded this album of extremely interesting takes on jazz standards earlier this year. If you think jazz standards are boring, give this a listen. Tsiganov has completely re-imagined these classics with new time signatures, reharmonizations, countermelodies, and new solo changes.

Billy Drummond- Dubai (1996)

>This is a quartet led by the great drummer Billy Drummond. A “chordless” ensemble, this is a good example of the sax battle setup, with Chris Potter and Walt Weiskopf both on saxes. As usual Chris Potter steals the show.

Pulpo’s Hot Bread (2009)

>salsa, son, guaguanco, cumbia, Latin jazz
>Pianist Gilberto Colon Jr. worked and toured with many of the Fania allstars in the golden age of salsa. On this album his band Pulpo re-interprets some salsa classics as well as original music in a variety of Cuban, Puerto Rican, and other Carribean styles. There are some tracks with vocals but for the most part the album is instrumental based and features some fantastic piano solos. Think Monk meets salsa.
