Any possible decline in American power/economy/whatever would be from the 90s onwards, where a lot of shit happened in the Middle-East (which I am admittedly not familiar with), and then early 2000s 9/11 happened, you go to war with Iraq, and waste a huge bunch of time and money looking for one man while bombing enough civilians to encourage more Islamic terrorism.
