I think the comic would have been fixed if they completely got rid of whatever that rivalry thing, and that character, and just made it about Rarity and Maud trying to find the cave because they heard at a presentation. The rival aspect feels incredibly forced for the sake of "Hey let's make an Indiana Jones reference!"
But overall, good read.

This is the one big problem with the comics in general: they're not ALLOWED to do that. They're just meant to take what's already been established or will never be used by the show again, and have fun with it. Reason being is that if the comics establish something NEW about a character, and the show does something the polar opposite, it looks bad for the comics.
Therefore, the comics are just in this sort of "floating continuity" thing, where they're established as having happened in x season or whatever, but can't really expand into anything more in depth and meaningful in a way that could interfere with the show. Essentially, they're paper filler episodes. That's not a bad thing, but I feel like people expect a whole lot more from the comics and are getting frustrated that they're not getting it.

Nope. We've never seen/heard Maud's inner emotional voice before, and it was displayed through this comic. In the show we've only heard ponies talk about how emotive Maud really is, like Pinkie talking about how excited her sister is or Rarity hyping her up against that rat pony in Manehattan. It was really cool to hear her inner voice for once, even if it was in writing.

I know I'm in the minority, as most people on here seem to hate IDW out of the gate; but honestly, this was a legitimately nice one.
Rarity and Maud worked well together IMO, in that Maud's deadpan state acted as a good punchline in comparison to how Rarity over acts on EVERYTHING.
The fact that rarity was constantly fired up about things only to get a "k" out of maud was decently amusing, and I found some of the situations funny or interesting: I'm a big indiana jones fans, so the homages to it were entertaining to me.
plus, I really liked the scene on the balloon; Maud saying that she DOES have emotions, she just doesn't know how to show them like other ponies kind of gave off the impression of an autistic person who has no idea how to function like a normal person but wishes they could.
Overall, I found her and rarity's interaction at the end decently heart touching, and it was a decent overall plot.
Plus, I'm a huge fan of Hickey's art, and I found the comic just a big joy to look at.

Except IDW definitely proves itself time and time again that it will most likely drop the ball no matter what. Honestly, there's no good reason to expect anything good until it's already out. In which case, I've seen people admit they were wrong, like #42 or that one with Blueblood where we all thought he would be some "woman hating mansplainer" in the eyes of Whitely, but he actually didn't write him like that. So they do occasionally prove themselves, but at their very best, it's an "eh, they did okay."
I think it's just a reflection of how the staff views their own comics. It's fairly obvious a good number of them don't care.

Pleasantly surprised out of 10
The mainline comics have constantly gone downhill and FF are hit or miss but this one was definitely a hit. Brenda Hickey's art is as always a pleasure to look at, but this was a fun, cute adventure between the two. Unlike most FF's where only one side really gets focus Rarity and Maud are clearly playing off each other and it works greatly to the comic's benefit, and they both learn from each other by comic's end. The scenery is great, the plot is simple but enjoyable and adventurous, I particularly love the original idea of exploring Maud's inability to emote, I never realized Rarity and Maud worked so well together.
The only weak link in my opinion would be the villain, a clear Indiana villain expy that was a little too cartoonishly evil but, honestly, it wasn't so bad, and it worked quite effectively for this comic, she was pleasantly dickish.
Overall, I'd go so far to say it's the best Pony comic since... jesus, I think the Discord/Luna FF back in September was the last one I enjoyed as much since this. I'm very surprised this came out of Ted Anderson of all writers but every broken watch is right twice a day. Between the art and the writing, this comic was a gem

If you go to the archive and search in the us just field for "storytime" you'll get all of them in chronological order if you feel like you missed any. Only thing I've storytimed since the Canterlot book was Sunset Shimmer's book that came out months ago, but that's not new.
I like the book storytimes more than the comic ones sometimes with how they seem to be more positive, be it a response to the content or just the crowd in general, so thank you guys as well for participating in those.

Normally I ignore shitposting but whatever, feeling nostalgic today.
In the first two years of the comics, RS was the most important source of information. IDW staff posted there more than on their own crappy ipbfree forums. You wanted previews? You wanted Curnow and the writers/artists to read feedback? You made a post there.
Unfortunately RS is probably the worst kiddy glove hugbox in the entire fandom, using exactly the excuse of wanting to attract - and keep - "VIP" posters involved with the show or comics. You say it was shit? Your post got deleted and you got banned.
So me and I think 2-3 anons started posting there trying to get past the censors and get some actual feedback to the staff posting there.
Then the whole dragondicks thing happened after the Power Ponies annual and blew up their feminist thread in the other subforum ("tone argument") and all the anons posting in there got banned.
I continued posting some reviews but along the way all the "VIP's" stopped coming to RS anyway, so I stopped posting too.
It's funny how some anons here seem to think I came from RS when the RS regulars know I'm the guy from 4chan who annoyed them by bursting their hugbox. Although msot of the worst offenders aren't on RS anymore either. RS is completely irrelevant now. The ones remaining just post in the EQD comments now.
