Her light-blue design was very pretty and cute, but not exactly imposing, angelic, motherly like Celestia's design is. Not to say that her season 2 design is good, it's actually awful as you described it, whoever designed it wasn' following aesthetic sense.
Celestia's design has been used in numerous media representing a white cloaked woman with light pastel hair color and an angelic holy light similar to one of a god.
