Perhaps without suitable ponies to wield the Elements of Harmony, Celestia grew desperate, and sought out the Alicorn Amulet to give her the edge to defeat Nightmare Moon when she returned.
Celestia manage to defeat NMM, but perhaps as a first step in her corruption, she either re-banished her, or done something worse.
And ever time some other threat comes along, Celestia quickly deals with it and becomes more and more corrupt, until she becomes just as wicked and evil as the enemies she smites (perhaps even more so).

Starlight's time shenanigans?
Here is an idea:
At the end of the two parter, the time spell disappeared in the time vortex.
What if it was not destroyed, but instead send back into time itself and will end at the hooves of past Celestia. Celestia, at the time suffering emotionally from having banned her sister, reads it and realizes it may be a way to fix her own past and safe her sister.
she travels back in time to help Luna, actually freeing her of her corrupted status, revealing (as Faust once planed years ago), that part of what made Luna evil, was also an outside influence. Said influence latches on the future Celestia and is send back in her time with her.
Ther eit feeds and takes control of her, turning Celestia into Nightmare Star and taking over the land, forcing Luna to go into hiding and form a rebel movement against her sister, who brings eternal day over the land.
the Mane 6 get involved in dealing with it, cause the Cutie Map protects them from the magic changing their history, turning them into outside observers who decide to fix the timeline.
