I think its just a really bad combination for Equestria. He took them by surprise, he has a magical slave army that is immune to morale effects due to be magic slave zombies, is clearly experienced in kicking butt and is not afraid to get on the battlefield and do so and probably has way more experience with the whole warfare thing than equestria does
