Season 3 is "not great" but has a few good episodes (Too Many Pinkie Pies, Sleepless in Ponyville). It also has Magical Mystery Cure which is probably the most hated episode but is a necessary watch due to the massive plot implications.
Season 4 is pretty darn good. Definitely better than Season 3 and I think most people see it as a decent return to form.
Season 5 so far is really really good. It's in the running for best season.
