I was always partial to the A-Wing myself.

Close to the Interceptor in speed, but with token shields.

Though I always hated when they tried to make improved versions of the TIE. Vader's was okay, since it was a one-off prototype that got toned down for the mass production model since it was way too expensive to make. Kind of like the Tallgeese of the Imperial fighter line. But adding hyperdrive and shields and cloaks and so on to the EU TIE models always reeked of fanfic-tier one-upsmanship to me. The whole point of the TIE line is absurdly cheap quantity-over-quality fighters because the Empire doesn't care about the lives of its pilots. Making them better just ruins that.

That, and they never looked as good.

I dunno, the empire had such limitless resources, it makes sense they would have an Elite Fighter. It still didn't need Hyperdrive, though

>The whole point of the TIE line is absurdly cheap quantity-over-quality fighters because the Empire doesn't care about the lives of its pilots

Or keeping uppity Admirals from stealing a handful of special fighters and using them to become a serious threat to the Empire.
>>
>>12376368
With the Empire, you have nearly endless supplies of materials and personnel, so you go for a ton of cheap fighters to overwhelm your opponents. The rebels don't have those kinds of numbers, so every craft needs to be as good and as survivable as they can make it or they'll be wiped out that much easier.

Plus, from the real world dramatic sense, swarms of hundreds of fighters descending on you is way more intimidating than just a handful.
>>
>>12376323

But the Defenders only turned up after Endor, right? I always figured the admirals and warlords were investing in fighters with higher survival rates because their resources and recruitment pools were dwindling.
>>
>>12376323
I don't mind it so much as long as stuff like the Defender remains a ship for the Elite few ace pilots, the bulk of the Imperial navy will always be the cheap little TIEs. It could also be argued as a matter of practicality, since while grunt pilots are disposable, the top ones are a valuable resource and a shame to waste.

Actually no. The Advanced, the Defender and a few others like the Phantom were prototypes made as War Winners. Kind of Like the Dom and Gelgoog to the Zaku and Gouf of the Interceptor and Fighter.

Problem was that Admirals went rogue and stole all of them or destroyed them to keep Grampy Sith from shitstomping everything.

Later on the few remaining factories and the like were used for elite aces like Soontir Fel and Turr Phenier to make Defenders but they started to die out after the Empire was at the very edge of the Galaxy.
>>
>>12376306
I thought A-wings don't have shields nor droids; it's just a sanic fast ship.
>>
If you wanna get a good sense of being overwhelmed by ties, go back and play the Battle of Endor level in Rogue leader 2.

You do indeed get swarmed by pretty large numbers of enemies, and that's from only '2' Destroyers, who threaten to wipe out a rebels fleet of 6+ ships in one small sector of the entire battle.
>>
>>12376416
Actually it had more to do with the fact that Navy brass didn't want to move away from their Star Destroyers. The Defender was the only one that happened to, and the Empire designed the even stronger missile boat in response.

"Your generic TIE grunt is just plain suicidal. And the TIE Defender jockey is bloodthirsty. But the TIE Interceptor pilot, he's suicidal and bloodthirsty. When you see a squad of those maniacs flying your way, you'd better hope your hyperdrive is operational."

Hyperdrive is good for giving a squadron of crack pilots more flexibility in their deployments.
>>
>>12376292
the best looking TiE? Sure, no doubt. It's awesome.

>>12377775
it depends. In the X-Wing games they have shielding that is fully on par with the X-wing itself. It's just that once the shields are down they're only about as durable as a TiE Interceptor.

but yeah, non vidya wise, it's shielding is just there to save it from indirect fire, because it's so small and light it lacks redundancy and hull plating so much so that even a minor hit can utterly cripple it.

>>12376306
it's faster than the interceptor. much faster if need be.
>>
>>12381782
In Rogue Squadron games A-wing shields sucked
>>
Why the fuck didn't the Empire integrate life support in their fighters? That's insane.
>>
>>12381951
Because their pilot suits could provide the life support.

I've always been partial to the TIE Avenger, although it seems to be the forgotten middle child of the TIE series. Not as broken or overpowered as the Defender but still having the frills of shields and hyperdrives that the Interceptor doesn't.
>>
>>12376368

> It still didn't need hyperdrive though
> Need

The Empire has never cared about need anon, for better or worse. This is a group that designed it's standard snubfighter down to the absolute minimum budget because there was no real opposition to combat at the time and it was just supposed to be a symbol, leaving it's pilots flying around in mobile coffins for all intents and then a few years later designed a space station the size of a moon just to wave their dicks in everyone's face.

The Empire didn't need a Death Star - it still built two. The Emperor didn't need any bodyguards - he still had them, for show. Complaining about need for the Empire is kind of ignoring their actual characterization in the films alone.

The TIE avenger was a direct descendant of Vader's TIE advanced. A solid machine that matched the X-wing while being marginally faster.
