80's /m/ cartoon thread? Why not? Never really watched C.O.P.S. as a kid, though I did watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp4Sqn0eX_Q
>>

>80's /m/ cartoon thread?
Sweet. There's many of them that don't get discussed around here much. Hell some 80's cartoons that weren't normally /m/ can even go that path sometimes.
>>
>>12235118

Ah man, I wish I had made an 80's Western animated General then.

I'm a Canadian kid. I had Global, YTV and Fox Kids. Global ran Inspector Gadget, and COPS a lot.

I don't think any station around here ran RoboCop show, which is why I didn't see it until recently. The show is pretty fun and silly. It works better if you're a diehard fan of the first RoboCop film, and see how they translate an R-rated adult film into a toy focused Saturday morning cartoon show.

Dr. McNamara:
>minor character in the film, just the developer of ED 209, not really a villain
>Show: He's a cyborg and recurring villain

Lieutenant Hedgecock

>Film he's the SWAT team leader, and minor character
>Completely neutral when it comes to RoboCop, and only attacked him because he had orders
>Show: Completely against RoboCop and hates him.

Clarence Boddicker
>Chaotic Evil crime boss
>Low level weapons like shotguns, drives a van and a sports car
>Show: Flies some jet that would cost 50 million or upwards

Also it does the standard RoboCop sequel ploy of reverting Murphy's personality to when he's Robotic. I guess none of the sequels knew what the hell to do with his personality.
>>
>>12235128

Reasons:

>Home releases are low quality, or non-existent
>DVD only typically
>piracy is nowhere near as dedicated as anime piracy
>Much of it still stuck in the avi/divx hell

For example: I can only find RoboCop animated in .avi format.
>>
Every single 80's cartoon had to include "street punks" as villains in at least one episode. It's a law.

>>
>>12235456
Most of what I know is that many different Japanese studios did work for several 80s cartoons on a work-for-hire basis. Or American companies would buy whole Japanese series and adapt them, for the U.S. (Voltron, Robotech, etc.). Very few Japanese companies did like what TMS did with Orbots and Bionic Six, at least to my knowledge.

Looking at this thread makes me realize how much anime was in the 80's.

My first anime was Noozles and Adventures of the Little Koala on Nickelodeon in 1990.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLKYOSiW7U4

Here's another one that's stretching it a bit, mainly because it's 90s, not 80s.
It's like the creators of this show said:
"Okay, we have robots as the main focus of this show. What toyetic gimmicks can we give them?"
"How about ALL OF THE GIMMICKS?"
"BRILLIANT!"
That's why we have transforming robots, combining robots, ninja robots, rapping robots and extreme sports robots all in the same show. And it was awesome.
>>

Nickelodeon had an awesome anime block back in the day.

Mysterious Cities of Gold
Spartacus and the Sun Beneath the Sea

That's pretty much all I can remember from the 80s without including the obvious mecha anime adapted for the U.S. I'm trying to find the intro for this rare cartoon called "Power Masters" (not Transformers-related), but it seems to have been taken down form the Tube.

>>

Only the intro and the stock transformation sequences, iirc. It's still one of the first times animation was ever outsourced to Japan though, and the show looks bad ass compared to other 80's shows as a result.

>>
>>12235140
Yeah, the Robocop cartoon was actually pretty good. One thing I always found odd about the Robocop cartoon was the accompanying toyline was called 'Robocop andthe Ultra Police' so I was expecting that it would be more of a team show like COPS, but the Ultra Police only ended up appearing in one episode.

Also, what was it about the 80's and turning R rated movies into kids cartoons? Rambo, Robocop and there was even an Aliens cartoon planned. Too bad we never got a Terminator cartoon, where John Connor and his multi-racial team of GI Joe stand-ins foil Skynet's plans to destroy humanity every week.

This REALLY pisses me off. Even in some private trackers which usually have higher quality rips for western content than TPB, cartoon DVD rips are still based on antiquated DivX shit. I hope one day to learn about making autist-quality DVD rips someday and get some stuff out.

Reasons.

1. Less dedicated fanbase.
2. Anime fans are on the cutting edge of video processing and playback. They dont' do western shows.

Solution:

We have to step in and fix it ourselves. I'm thinking of getting RoboCop The Animated Series and giving it a proper mkv rip.

Also check out kickass, there are some newer mkv/h.264 rips out there for some western shows. Some. And even then, the dvd qualities are just not that great.

>>
>>12242027
Episodes of Ring Raiders are up on the Tube, so you can check them for yourself. Quality of the show aside, it certainly wasn't "all prop planes". There were only like one or two characters that used prop planes. Most of them used jets. And a rescue copter.

90's and early 00's had some of the best /m/ western animation. I think it's mainly because at this time they started to combine some of the toyetic concepts from the 80's with better storytelling, including ongoing plots, continuity, character development, even character deaths.

We have of course, Exo Squad, which imo is the best western /m/ animated show (despite the often cheap animation and weird 90's dayglo designs): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rR7ktkOEeFw

Wing Commander Academy, which is ten times better an adaptation than that pile of shit of a movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Z0JSfCejY4

Roswell Conspiracies, a nice X-Files like series from the story editors of Beast Wars (TF scribe Simon Furman even wrote the series finale): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bVHpMvedOs

Starship Troopers Roughneck Chronicles which is a decent adaptation that combines the power armor/ mecha concepts of the novel with the movie:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-97DMohl6o

To name a few.

>Emperor Dark, far from being the standard Evil Overlord these shows usually had, seemed more like a NEET who'd rather stay in his room all day doing experiments than conquering the universe.

I'm 4 eps in now and it seems that the usual corporate meddling has reared its head. ie: airing episodes in the wrong order.
Episode 3 had Malvanna appear and talk about wanting to doublecross emperor Dark. We had never seen these characters before. And she develops a crush on one of the good guys. But we don't know who she is because she's just appeared.

Then Episode 4 had Emperor Dark and Malvanna being introduced..! The hell?
>>
>>12243924
I think the best thing about the Wing Commander is that they actually went to the trouble of getting Mark Hamill, Tom Wilson and even Malcolm frickin' McDowell to voice their characters. You could tell that the creators really cared about the lore and wanted to keep it in line with the game universe.

Which is far more than you could say for the live action movie.

said, I wasn't sure if the show could live up to that intro. But the price sure is tempting.

Ahh right, Visionaries is sorta like Saint Seiya except with Jem holograms right?
>>
>>12242645
Surely Dinosaucers are immune from donut steels?
>>
Huh, so that explains why plenty of 80's cartoon designs and artstyle reminds me of 80's anime - they were outsourced to Japan?
>>
>>12256752
Not exactly. Saint Seiya characters have various powers and abilities all over the place. Visionaries characters' had powers that were a little more limited, more strictly defined.
You should still watch it anyway.

>>12256763
Yup.
>>
>>12250891
Ugh, I hate Filmation's animation. It's so cheap.
>>
>>12256788
I watched Visionaries but vaguely remember it, only know that they have solid holograms of their animal spirit or something.

Yeah, dem stiff bodies with moving faces.

Shit, is that the late Garry Owen's narrating?

Yeah, that was Peter Cullen. He was also the narrator of Voltron; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uS5b8aQ6z8

Ah the 1980's, when the Cartoon industry was deregulated and Toyetic was the name of the game.

It's French, they always have a tendency to go all in on whatever concept they hit on

It was also the time when they were running with 3D and CG in general.

>Reboot especially got amazing in season 3-4. Got really serious and gritty.
Because they finally got the shackles of ABC's S&Ps off after they got cancelled when Disney took over and YTV picked them up and basically went 'we love you guys, do whatever you want and we'll green light it.'
>>
>>12260178

YTV is a Canadian station. The rules for Canadian shows is much looser. It's just that most Canadian shows are rebroad-cast American ones which come pre-censored, and the original content tends to be TVO or CBC (educational, PG-rated). You can have mild nudity or swearing past a certain point if you want.

Reboot season 3-4, and especially War Planets were pretty brutal and gritty. War Planets had soldiers dying repeatedly in episodes. Hostages being executed. They were solid PG rated shows.

It's a total shame that there aren't new shows made in this style. It could be like Canadian-anime. Most Canadian animation now is just meant for the American market.

I think Shuki levy has done the majority of the intro themes for much of the eighties and early nineties.

>>12235374
I think Centurions is a show that I think is a show that you can do a remake of. just add some halo elements to the suits, keep the crazy cyborg scientist wanting to turn the world into robots, just give him a better reason on wanting to do so. have gratuitous mech porn when they combine with the weapons, and mech gore when they're out there fighting robot bad guys and bam got some animated vanquish going.

Would this counts as Western Sentai?

Just the best mobster ever, passing through.

I had the toy for this badass when I was a kid. Everything in his little bio card was "Unknown: no witnesses willing to testify". He wasn't in the episodes nearly enough, though.

Not really, but it's similar enough to the same type of shows as animes with young men in mystical armor (Saint Seiya, Shurato, Samurai Troopers, etc.).

God damn.

Can someone just make a nice simple chart explaining how to properly make proper x264 rips?

Doesn't h264 work fine in an .mp4 container? The wikipedia article seems to say so.

Sometimes the music gets releases later on as a bonus or is just released by the artist on a whim. Like bits from the Thundercats soundtrack.

It was... okay. Nothing really knockout spectacular, but entertaining. And pretty animation every so often, like Thundercats.
It suffers from the same depictions of outer space that the original Thundercats did... namely, that people can breathe and talk in deep space and not worry about explosive decompression or anything, even though Silverhawks had after-show educational segments that were supposed to teach kids about outer space.

Fun fact: Nobuteru Yuki did the character design for Bionic Six.

Yeah, the one who did Escaflowne, Chrono Cross, X, Xenosaga and others.

I usually hate Bernard Minet's openings, but the french one for Silverhawks was pretty cool. At least, the BG is cool.

Wait, really? The designs in that show don't really look much like his usual style.. than again the same could be said for his Little Tail Bronx work so what do I know.
>>
>>12281617
I always wondered about this, was there ever any official crossover between Thundercats and Silverhawks? I know that they were by the same creators but was there ever anything like with Transformers and GI Joe (where a retired Cobra Commander showed up in one episode of Transformers)?
