For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Field Repair
Basically what this means is that rather than the mobile suit being fresh out of a factory, it's quite the opposite. Whether it's trudging through dense jungles or dodging debris in asteroid belts, your mobile suit has seen some better days.
You've been out in the field for quite a long time now, nearly half a year of active duty in the front lines and your personal mobile suit's pretty banged up. What's worse is the fact that there isn't a maintenance bay within several thousand kilometers of your local area that's capable of making any major repairs. Your unit's engineering crew has resorted to patch work and jury-rigging to keep your machine operational. Stray fire might have crippled its legs and arms or otherwise dealt considerable damage to a mobile suit's systems meanwhile some units have simply lost bits of armor and panels to the elements and have been forced to patch weld metal sheets over the exposed inner workings.
In any case it's beaten to hell but somehow you and your team have somehow kept it chugging along and now command's ordered all units operating in your theatre to fall back to form a defensive line against the enemy offensive.

So where do ya'll buy your Gunpla? I bought my first (an HG RX-78-2) from Gundam Planet, and I was gonna order some more from them, but I just wanna know if there's a better place.

Man, the hands on the GM Quel are a pain in the ass. I wound up using some spare hands from the Kampfer and they work better.

lots, these old kits are rough compared to modern ones, so there is lots of sanding and body work. The tough part about the visor extension was actually making sure that it came far enough forward to follow the curve down of the head curve
I used apoxie putty for the head and other major structural stuff, it dries very hard but also sandable to be very smooth like this

I just used what came with the kit, but with a few little modifications, because the shoulder armor is just 2 halves, I drilled out the shoulder where the plastic peg was and put tiny magnets in, then put them in the shoulder pieces as well so that I can just slide the shoulder armor on and off so the paint will be even and decals will be easier
for the head, the outer shell piece is 2 halves also, so I cut unseen parts away so that I could slide that on and off as well
the kit has basically no poseability due to the design, the skirt is so wide and the legs are designed such that it can basically only stand
I will probably stick pretty close to the regular scheme from the boxart, which is one of my favorites. One question will be if I do the multitude of okawara MSV stripes that are all over it, those are usually decals these days but this kit did not come with any, so I would have to do them by masking.
This will be a pretty slow process in paint anyway, but I did get the base coat and all 20 thrusters done tonight, so I can start planning from there.
This kit will have lots of post paint assembly which is scary, but will look best if it goes well

here are the colors I did tonight, base is Mr. Color Dark Green (Kawasaki) and the thrusters are Alclad Magnesium (which is pretty dark in normal lighting) with Jet Exhaust edges and interiors because it will be a somewhat more subdued suit overall

also those thrusters were a huge fucking pain, today this would be designed so the bar with the two ball ends would be one piece and the thrusters would pop on to pegs under the balls, but this whole thing was just two halves so to seam weld it I had to rescribe all of the lines in 4 places

I also have a original RX-78-2 I've been working on for months on and off, the mint green is really hard to cover up even with white primer because of how much of the kit has to be painted assembled. It's pretty much ready for paint at this point, but it's gonna be a huge pain in the ass to mask
I have a ton of masking in my future, but it's great practice. Pretty much anyone can paint smooth, the time you take masking is what makes a paint job turn out great.

mirror gold on the shield cross for maximum 70's cheap toy look
To avoid maskingI built visors for the front and top portions of the head out of clear plastic. The front visor is starting to get some fogging from tiny stresses in the plastic, but future will fix that by filling those micro cracks.
The visors are currently cut to hold themselves in with tension so I can take them out when I'm doing the flat coating. Not sure my current monoeye solution will fit in there with these, but I've been thinking about other ways to do that.

a hobby company called K&S Metals which usually makes bars and tubes also makes clear plastic sheet
I just happened to see it at my local hobby shop, I'm sure evergreen and all of those guys make clear plastic too, I know most even make colored clears as well

Guntanks cannons are attached to the torso, not the shoulders or backpack. And they sit inside these grooves on it. Its like that on both the regular and origin version. You would need to swap out the whole torso which I think defeats the purpose of the look you're going for.

So I got a real grade Zaku II over the holidays, and sat down to try and build it. Holy shit is this thing a pain in the ass. The leg hoses are fucking annoying as shit, especially their pegs. Pulling them out of the bag they had stress lines already and broke the second any pressure was applied. Thankfully superglue keeps them in place.
But how the fuck are you supposed to get them in to their slots? I got one in, but I felt like I was applying enough pressure to create a fucking diamond, and my thumbs are worn raw. Does anyone have any tips for getting them flush in their holes?

I got it guys. Hiro posted in g/p general and got his work criticized by filthy gaijin so he set into motion his master plan to make 4chan's gunplarers go insane. It's all clear now.
pic of my first actual attempt at seam welding, looks not the best, as you can tell. part of it probably looks as bad as it does is because when I got an acrylic finishing set as a gift, it had another bottle of cement in it, so I used that, without reading how it was for clear parts, making me sand it down and apply normal cement. I also accidentally glued in the bending polycap on the thigh the wrong way, so I had to split it and re cement. planning on sanding a bit more and doing more touch up work tomorrow.
