Vol 1 Chapter 6
>Every last one of Friedrich IV's nine brothers and sisters were dead. Starting with his empress, Friedrich had impregnated six women for a total of 28 times, but there had been six miscarriages and nine stillbirths, and of the thirteen who had been born, four had died before their first birthday, five had died before reaching adulthood, and two had died as adults.
>The first was that the emperor, having been through the deaths of many mistresses in difficult past childbirths, feared losing Annerose and had never made her pregnant. Another factor in that decision was pressure from aristocrats concerned about the succession struggle that might ensue if Annerose were to give birth. From Reinhard's standpoint, the thought of his sister bearing the emperor's child was too disgusting to even contemplate.

So this is a future where they cured cancer centuries ago, yet child mortality has been set back to preindustrial standards?

I have no idea what your image has to do with it.

And yes, I mean it happens, and that's a little more excusable back before modern medicine and hell even now. But this is a future where its extremely difficult for you to do if it doesn't involve lasers, and yet apparently kids die REAL easy.
>>
>>14455493
to die if*

Also that only accounts for 4 of the deaths.
>>
>>14455493
SIDS is caused by proximity to Donald Trump.
>>
>>14455520

Oh.

Also maybe Friedrich just has shitty genetics that helps cause all these deaths.
>>
>>14455493
It's sort of immersion breaking, but the Empire side of LoGH is really more of a Prussian Empire story with the backdrop of a space opera, so such things as children dying young and the older style of politicking matches a different genre.

I guess you could say it's the difference between Rose of Versailles and Gankutsuou?
>>
Also as for the OP image I used, it reminds me of another piece from the book

>Reinhard stretched out his long, supple fingers and playfully tugged at his best friend's hair, as red as if dyed with molten rubies. Reinhard would do this sort of thing from time to time when no one else was around. During his boyhood, he would describe Kircheis's hair according to his whim: whenever they were quarreling - a state that never lasted very long - he would say mean things like, "What's with that red hair? It looks like blood." Then after they made up, he would praise it, calling it "really pretty, like a burning flame."

Now we know Kircheis wanted to give it to Annerose all night long, but are we SURE Hildegard wasn't a beard?

>>14455543

I suppose, though Gankutsuou works because The Count of Monte Cristo's story honestly is timeless, you can put it in any time period and with a few small details changed can tell the exact same revenge story right down to the same character motivations.
>>
>>14455583
I guess that's true, but at least you see my point.
>>
>>14455583
You'll have to wait until we get to volume 3, when Hildegard shows up for the first time.
>>
>>14455583
Hilde isn't a "beard" in the traditional sense. But Reinhard needed an heir despite being warsexual.
>>
>>14455583
Well shit watching the Gaiden, Reinhard get pouty whenever Kirchies is late even when he says he could of taken more time.

Idk if he wanted to plow him perse but it's obvious that he loved him. Two way street where the people they cared most for was one another and Annerose.
>>
>>14455460
>>14455493
It's possible that genetic science in LOGH was curtailed due to Rudolph's policies (the Inferior Genes Exclusion Act). After all, it kind of defeats the purpose of making sure only 'superior' people can rule if anyone can tamper with their genes to make themselves 'superior'.
>>
>>14455460
This is a future where inbreeding is back to pre-industrial standards.
>>

>So this is a future where they cured cancer centuries ago, yet child mortality has been set back to preindustrial standards?

Well yes, just because you cure cancer doesn't mean you cure death. Friedrich IV was probably just really unlucky.

Yes

Wtf is with this writing? It sounds like flowery yaoi fics 19 y.o. female English majors write. Is this really the power level of Japanese professional sci-fi writers? Whew.
>>
>>14461354
To be fair, perhaps that writing is the intention. After all, the Reinhard/Kircheis relationship takes after Alexander/Hephaestion, and the "flowery yaoi" style does contribute to that image.

It certainly is a bit heavy on the fujo no matter what.
>>
>>14461373
Yeah, it's not like you can write gay characters without being flowery. I doubt Alexander wanted to be described like this:

>His white, oval face was adorned on three sides with slightly curling golden hair, and his lips and the bridge of his nose had an elegance that brought to mind a sculpture carved by the hands of some ancient master craftsman.

>“But what could never be captured in lifeless sculpture were his eyes—ice-blue eyes that shone with light like the blade of a keenly polished sword, or the gleam of some frozen star.”

Cringeworhty. Also
>shone with light
Wtf. Like something can shine with darkness. I will never read these books. Looks like they'll trigger my autism and /lit/ism too much.
>>
>>14461508
>Yeah, it's not like you can write gay characters without being flowery.

Reinhard isn't gay, he just likes running his finger through his best friend's hair.

This amuses me.

LOGH made me want weird things.
>>
>>14455520
You misspelled Bernie Sanders there.
>>
>>14462639
Meme Man and Socialist Hitler are both equally bad about it.
>>
>>14455647
>But Reinhard needed an heir
He didn't strictly need one because he didn't believe that his offspring would be able to rule well just because they're his offspring. If his son becomes a worthy ruler, then he can rule, but he leaves that, along with the job of transitioning the New Empire into a Constitutional Monarchy to Hildegarde.

>>14461508
>I doubt Alexander wanted to be described like this

Not everyone is a homophobe like you.
Fuck off back to /pol/.

>look at me I'm so above it all, all of the candidates are bad in this election aren't I so clever
>>
>>14462797
>all of the candidates are bad in this election
Well he's not wrong. We're on the path to becoming as rotted on the inside as the FPA's democracy was, we just don't have a Trunicht yet.
>>
>>14462797
>>look at me I'm so above it all, all of the candidates are bad in this election aren't I so clever
They really are the lowest-approval ratings of any candidates in modern US history and many of their voters aren't so much voting for them as voting against the other.
54% of Republicans don't like Trump but said they'd still vote for him to stop Hillary.
Hilldog did manage to get a slight majority of Dems, 51%, to say they liked her as the candidate. The rest are voting for her to stop Trump.
This is just a fucked election cycle and no matter who wins(538 gives Hillary an 80+% on it), they're going to be a one-termer.
>>
>>14466172
Yeah, some of my profs from college and my political science friends are saying this is a historic election in terms of how disliked both candidates are. Regardless of which one of them wins, a lot of folks are predicting it'll seriously shake up both political parties.
>>
>>14466176
When the choices have come down to Fascist(R) and Republican(D), you do have a problem.
Say what you will about Bernie, at least he got the young people excited for him the way Obama managed to do in 2008. It just wasn't enough to beat the "Hillary is Inevitable" train his party was choo-chooing on.
>>
>>14462797
Well wouldn't he have needed a son for Hildegarde to have a legitimate position? Seems her only route to power is regency.

This the son served more to solidify Hilda's position more than his son's really especially since it's entirely likely that she'll slowly shift it to constitutionalism anyways, unless something drastic happens that shifts how things are going.

That said about constitutionalism, is it just me or is Julian the real winner?

>Completed the goals of his father figure and mentor by securing a bastion of democracy
>Also likely that due, in part at least, even if small, that there's gonna be a wider push to constitutionalism in the empire as well even if it was parroting his predecessors actions and plans it was still impressive
>Got best girl
>Still has his whole life ahead of him in a galaxy that for the first time in centuries is going to be peaceful

On top of that he's Moe.
>>

>>look at me I'm so above it all, all of the candidates are bad in this election aren't I so clever
I-is it so criminal to think this?
They all seem like jackasses who speak before they think, and each one has more than a couple volatile political views.
Romney and Obama seemed like pretty normal people compared to these clowns.
>>
>>14466950
I think it's more about the impression of you being above it all that's bothering him- Trump's just a meme-machine and Hill's the safest bet despite the email scandal.

As the guy who made the initial remark, it's just that I really think Trump is a walking meme who just feeds his audience exactly what they want to hear instead of what they need to hear, and Bernie's rhetoric gives me Hitler vibes.
>>

Eh, I guess in terms of mass appeal or something? I really don't know what their plan is.
>>
>>14466950
>Romney and Obama seemed like pretty normal people compared to these clowns.
Because they are normal people by comparison. They thought before they spoke in public and were polite to each other. It was civil, like an election is supposed to be.
>>
>>14467067
What really bothers me is how the same thing pretty much overtook internet society years earlier. The winning strategy is just overwhelming the opponent with shitposts and carefully constructed narratives.
>>
>>14467085
>>14467067
Romney learned from 2008s trouncing of McCain that vitriol wouldn't work. Hillary learned that the hard way when her anti-Obama ads turned voters against her and led to Barry taking the lead.
Now, we've let our sides become so divided and unwilling to listen to each other. Each side insists they're not the ones so I guess the dividing, it's the OTHER assholes who are dividing us. But that very same rhetoric is just part of the problem.
