This revelation also confirms no returning Eternal and Lightning for the Excellence units and no DaiRaiO or playable Cobray or a lot of other things people were hoping for, but overall I'm happy with what we've seen of MD.

Nah I was just memeing, but really I think the whole reason they named the game Moon Dwellers instead of 3rdOG aside from the newcomer thing is because they want to pump the sequels in relatively quicker succession in order to grab and keep the new audience they're trying to attract.
All they really need to work on each game is just the new units + revise some of the older, shafted guys (like this time, Rio and Ryoto. We could see Gilliam or the Fairlions or something get revisions and animation upgrades), while the rest they can literally just carry over and keep as is since they seem to be pushing for bigger continuity.

Also the gap between OGs/OGG and 2ndOG was so fucking huge mostly because of how much shit they packed in considering they had to redraw every sprite and reanimate most of the returners, IN ADDITION to the fuckhuge amount of new shit they covered like Masoukishin and D and MX and everything else.
There's just less workload inbetween games now since it seems like they're sticking to this system and engine, so it's very reasonable to expect the next game to come out in like 2 years imo
