There's nothing about mobile suits that render Yamato's plot impossible or unlikely. The Yamato's main gun and its hyper space jump abilities also are beyond anything in UC, so the premise of needing the ship for interstellar travel in order to save Earth works just fine.
The main issue is just that there doesn't seem to be any other shows for the deep space stuff, so Yamato's plot likely will happen in just one big block of stages once it leaves Earth's surroundings.

In Yamato (well, the original, I haven't watched 2199), they had bases all around the solar system, but they were mostly attacked and destroyed before the beginning of the series.
Gundam's Space colonies, rather than being completely destroyed, could just be damaged and with limited resources due to the enemy army around, keeping the premise basically the same as Earth's situation.

Alpha 1 is huge and well managed
Alpha Gaiden is great and also invented after a story that works well.

People complain that they do not put Star Driver, Majestic Prince, Vandread or their favorite show, but modern mecha anime that increase the complexity of the setting, becomes a mess to match together.
How you can run Captain Earth with something like VVV? Old Show were easier to manage, partly because they were often in similar setting.
