I don't know how you can classify it as a surprise attack given he was in the middle of a dogfight with the guy who killed him. Not being able to react fast enough to an attack you see coming isn't the same thing as a surprise attack.
And Arad is probably the least visible and effective member of Delta Squadron. Outside the pilot he barely appears in fights. At least Chuck is there struggling occasionally. Arad just kind of fades.

You can get surprised by an enemy you are fighting head on.
Like, imagine you are in a sword fight with a guy. You swing, he blocks your blade, and while your blades are locked with his other hand he pulls out a knife you didn't know he had and stabs you in the throat.
That's basically what happened to Messer. Keith blocked his by sacrificing a drone, but then used a weapon that, traditionally, is useable in Battroid mode and not plane mode to get a shot off at Messer while his normal plane guns didn't have a shot. Its a legit clever move, but its also a surprise.

A surprise attack is normally used to refer to an attack from an enemy you didn't know was there until it's too late. Let's call Keiths unexpected as opposed to surprise, since he knew Keith was there, but didn't expect an attack from the nosecone lasers. It's a legitimate attack, but the Draken is still technologically superior is several ways, with the ability to use its lasers in fighter mode being a minor, but in this case important one. And Keith blocking Messer's own shots using a drone before the attack being another, much more major one. If Messer had had drones he probably would have be alive, since it'd level the field and change all battles due to it. Giving Hayate, who is about the best remaining pilot in Delta since Arad is basically invisible drones is a good idea since it gives him the tools Messer never had but could have used.

Arad isn't anywhere going by the episodes, since he doesn't do shit in any if the fights. Unless you count ferrying Mikumo around for a second in the pilot. He wasn't effective against Keith in this episode either. At least Hayate has shot Bogus down, clipped one of the twins and managed to entertain Keith for a second by getting behind him. That alone is more than Arad has ever done.

Except we've never seen that. The most we were told of his skills was that he and Chuck were good enough to disable the Var'ed pilots instead of killing them but we usually see them in trouble with the Knights or fade out.
In comparison, Hayate started out sucking but is the only person to actually shoot down one of the Knights and clip another which is a far cry from how he used to be as a pilot where his most notable skill was dodging. I'm not saying he's better than Arad though, but I am saying we have more evidence of his future growth in skill.

Messer himself said that he and Arad were the only two pilots in delta squad good enough to reliably shoot down enemy planes without killing the pilots without leaving themselves sitting ducks in the process. Messer was a better pilot than Arad, but Arad is still pretty damn good.
Think of it this way: all those fights where the Ariel knights show and and then spam drones/mind control a bunch of NUN guys onto their side. Messer was occupied PvPing Keith, Hayate and Mirage are too busy playing defense and keeping Bogue from killing Walkure to really participate in the fight.
So who the hell do you think is downing drones and Var'ed out pilots the whole fight? All because he doesn't get the screentime for it doesn't mean he isn't carrying a lot of the fight on his shoulders.

I'm not debating he's a good pilot by the way, only the idea that Hayate's only getting drones because he's weak - with Arad being good enough to not need them. Messer and Arad would both take them if the could most likely, since they're not operating on any fairness logic like you appear to be, and Arad could be better with them, even if he's good without. He might even be able to do something against a guy like Keith, instead of just being silent and useless. If Hayate was only getting them because he was weak, Mirage would be getting them first.

You really could have worded that better. Not to mention that I'm not sure two pilots have ever hooked up in Macross despite it happening at least once before with 7. Common interests aren't a guarantee of anything since opposites attracting is probably even more of a cliche and just as good a basis for fictional romance as common interest.

Yes, and every example with it has more than just mystique as a trait. Which there's nothing to point to with Mikumo. All she has is mystery, so saying she's final boss material purely because of it is dumb. Especially when she's actively helping Delta Squad, has been with years, is trying to make Freyja a better VAR singer and risks herself to protect other Walkure members as well as the public from harm regularly.
Maybe Delta Squad would do better if they used GERWALK. If games have taught me anything, it's to never ignore the power of GERWALK.

In high atmosphere gerwalk is really only good for air-braking, or a swift/hard change of vector. Which they do use it for, Hayate using it for that purpose on Keith this episode. He got some use out of it in space, to dance on asteroids too.
