The idol shit is horrible. It's a crying shame that it's viewed as a staple of Macross. Only 7 had aliens hurt by singing, and even then the singing wasn't the main cause according to fluff. Even without idols though Macross wouldn't be a gritty war/survival drama about transforming robots on a giant transforming ship where people fight alone against aliens in a bitter battle or being bitter about. Because armored packs, before the VF-25's, forces the VF into battroid and keeps it that way until they purge it. Battroid-only is way less versatile than being able to switch between all 3 modes with say, a super pack, and still be faster and more armed than a VF with no packs.
