I guess it was the fact that Power Rangers wasn't a franchise completely owned by them. They seemed to put some effort in the first couple of seasons, but suddenly were shoving it aside. Although RPM is great. it basically only exists due to Bandai and it was shafted in Disney's program schedules.
There were also the news about them attempting to make a cartoon that somehow got blocked by either Toei or Bandai.

They cut the budgets even lower. Didn't promote the show. Hired people who didn't give a shit. Gave orders to "just translate" episodes. Aired RPM at like 4am in a small amount of the US and aired it at a decent time hardly anywhere, with many places not getting it at all. They didn't want to pay for warehouses to store PR, Sentai, B-Fighter, Kamen Rider etc props, monster suits from 1992-onwards so literally threw them in a woodchipper.

This, basically. Really the fact that they decided to continue production at all was a miracle, mostly making the best out of a bad situation on their part. It's pretty clear there was a sudden shift in priorities when the higher-ups realized it wouldn't magically become a sensation again.
Look at Disney's last two acquisitions. Marvel, at the height of it's new-found popularity. LucasArts, a literal money making machine that will do it's job no matter what it shits out. When it comes to third parties, they only care about sure deals that could do well without their direct involvement.

The only really bad aspects of the current series are the fact that it uses Tommy for it's main POV, which wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't an AU set in modern times that kind of dismisses their earlier adventures. Still, even this is preferable to sitting through a 5-issue origin arc, even if does confirm the usual nostalgia fag bias.
Also the largely uninspired monster designs, which goes along with the point I just made. You can't just say it's an AU, keep everything mostly the same and then throw generic monsters at the team. The artist could at least study some of the original designs to get a feel for the general "animal + object" aesthetic.

I do like the ocasional Billy and Trini dynamics. I don't really like it being an AU since there's so much to do with the established continuity without budget, past actor and footage constrants that it feels like a waste.
But I'll take what we have over introducing pointless drama on the established continuity that we already know it wont go anywhere since Tommy ended up being fine with everyone else. I mean, the outcome will probably be the same, but at least we havent been told so, and will allow for some development that wont clash with the one in the show.

That's something else I have issues with. Jason doesn't seem like himself at all, baring that one scene he had with Kimberly at the dojo. Honestly I like Tommy, or maybe just the idea of Tommy. I love legacy characters and Power Rangers is about entire legacy teams, but I also love the veteran old-timer "I was kicking ass before you were a twinkle in your father's eye" badass. The guy who's been there this whole time, seen teammates and friends come and go, and kept on trucking. Like when they brought back the Justice Society: OG Green Lantern, OG Flash and Wildcat decided to teach the youngsters a thing or two about costumed crime-fighting, and so the team was old guys plus a bunch of younger heroes they'd taken under their wing.
I am in the midst of writing a homebrew PR tabletop campaign for my friends. It's doing a multiverse thing, and I'd had an idea that was since tabled about how to handle Tommy: the Tommy encountered in the game would be from an alternate universe where he was either never freed from brainwashing or was already evil anyway, and he ended up being a recurring enemy of Ranger teams everywhere: like Sinestro to the GLs, there's obviously ones he's closer to than others, but any will do for a fight. He would be the Green Dragon Ranger (White Tiger going instead to either Zack, Trini or Jason), disappear, then screw up In Space's whole "fake Psycho Silver" ploy being the actual Psycho Silver, then bonding with Zen-aku as the Lunar Wolf Ranger, then in a Kamen-Rider-Double twist, he is both Thunder Rangers, then finally the White Dino Ranger to bring things back full circle when the players meet him.
In fact, the generals for my "season" where all Rangers: a misguided Adam Park, now the Gold Zeo Ranger; the A-squad Red who jumped ship as soon as it seemed like the BBEG from SPD was set to lose, given the Quantum morpher; and a "Gold Pharaoh Ranger" who turns out to be from the "real universe" where PR is a children's toy commercial who managed to find her way into the show and got her own super special snowflake mary sue morpher.AlternaJason is the BBEG.

So basically the whole thing with Jason is that in alternate universe, the first MMPR team went on a routine mission that went horribly wrong - Jason was the lone survivor. He went mad with grief and decided that it was all his fault - if he as leader had just had more control over the team, things would have been fine. To control the team, he needed control over the morphing grid. He killed Zordon, absorbed the morphing grid and became a one-man ranger team. He learns that there are multiple universes, and vows to bring them all under his thumb. I'd like to note that this was long before the Flash tv show and ZOOM traveling the multiverses, killing speedsters and stealing their share of the Speed Force.
His fighting style would make use of his morpher, held like brass knuckles and spouting inky black DARKNESS to form each of the original 6's weapons. Only his own sword has any real shape to it, the rest are more vague and suggestive of different weapons.
