Think of it as an extra EN/SP bar that gives you more stats as it goes up. Eg if you have 64 Prana, then you'd have better performance than someone with 32. Certain high level attacks such as Cosmo Nova use up Prana so you have to be wary not to spam them or else you'll have to put up with crippling the unit.
You get more Prana on level up and the unit IIRC regains 5PN per turn.

The design of Getter in W was basically the Armageddon Getter, the only single difference is that the chestplate on 1 wasn't red.
So they used that with the face sprites from D and they got Armageddon Getter.

Gakuen only exists because they could take the animations of every unit but one from three past games and shove it together with the mechanics of something from one of their other games that sold like shit. And it still barely worked because J's animations stick out like a sore thumb, which is why the most units any J series has is two and that's because that one required a comboattack for the units to be any better than shit. And they still had to drop licenses for Tekkaman Blade, and they didn't bring Mazinger Z in despite the unit looking FAR BETTER than Mazinkaiser's version. (that's also why you see things like fucking Dobeks in from K while W has very few mooks, and then of course J doesn't even have Final Dancouga and Great Zeorymer and Master Gundam amongst other things)
If it got into a modern SRW, it would just take the animations from the UX and BX series, and only those. And I don't have to point out how weird it would look.

A 3DS version with just UX and BX, yes we may need another game. But it would be a good way to include the cast of Build Fighters.

Compare an average J unit to an average K unit side by side. You'll see barely any DKs (unless it's God Gundam, the only other unit in Gakuen from J with a DK is IIRC Dancouga), very little actual sprite movement, no walking animations at all... most of the good looking J units were taken from W.

Mazinkaiser KS has things from that. I think Million A, MAYBE? They'd be it.
As for Originals, there's only one Banpresto Original in Gakuen, and it's also the only unit with new animations that weren't from a past game.
