Yokoyama's designs are great, but that Giant Robo is NOT a Yokoyama design. The original is better looking anyway.

Giant Robo was made in a time before mecha had become anywhere near as toyetic as it would become down the road, and so Yokoyama probably designed his robots the way he did for either the sake of fitting in with the narrative in some way or for the sake of simple artistry. And so what we ended up with are unusual robots that do not have a strictly humanoid silhouette and are more subdued in their colours, as opposed to all the heroic reds, whites, blues and yellows we're used to. Additionally, Giant Robo has a bit of an unusual, almost retro-futuristic setting as well, and since very few mecha stories are set in this kind of world, you don't see too many similar designs (and if you did, you wouldn't think it was the best because it wouldn't be unique). Only other mecha anime I can think of that has this kind of style that isn't a Yokoyama work is The Big O.
>>
>>14223109
Big O was definitely done in the style of a Yokoyama work. Big O just bleeds Yokoyama. Everything from the character designs to the mecha.
>>
>>14222974
That barrel shaped bomb dropper will always be one of the coolest designs ever. Truly from a different era.

I like how this guy showed up in Imagawa's Tetsujin 24.
>>
>>14224139
I'm not giving him credit for anything. All I said is that he didn't design his robots to sell action figures and that he has very few imitators. These two things make him stand out.
>>
>>14224170
Two false statements make him stand out? Alright then.
>>
>>14224176
Please do tell me where the falsehood lies.
>>
>>14224190
Talentless hacks like Nagai, Ishikawa, the entirety of Dynamic Productions are soulless imitators of his shit
>>
>>14224210
Maybe they copied his format, but the closest the art styles got was in Cyborg 009 (which was Ishinomori to begin with). Mazinger, Getter and whatnot have their own look to them that was new at the time. Although yes, I know, Getter 1's design screams "Black Ox" and they're definitely closer than something like Gundam, for the most part, they're far enough removed to feel unique. They look less like something you'd see in Metropolis and more like something you'd see in a Silver Age comic book

Much as I feel Yokoyama needs more love, let's give the credit where it's due. He was likely an influence, but not the only one - the showrunners have credited Bruce Timm in interviews as a stylistic inspiration.
>>
>>14224293
He gets more love than almost anybody talked about on this board or any anime/manga related board, fuck are you on about?

Both Kazuyoshi Katayama (director) and Keiichi Sato (mecha design) worked as animation directors/supervisors for Giant Robo. If B:TAS gave Big O the Dark Deco aesthetic and Batfamily characters, Giant Robo gave it the iron-and-rivets mechs.

It's interesting that you mention post-Gundam mecha being more toy centered, as both Robo and Big O are designed with themes relating to their nature as toys.

>>
>>14226475
Hell, I wouldn't even say it was Gundam that kicked off the trend of mecha merchandising. That began with Mazinger Z getting as big as it did, if you ask me. Stuff like Gundam and Transformers were just logical conclusions to a preexisting model.

And while I'm not sure about Giant Robo, as far as I can tell, Big O didn't get any toys until season 2, which aired nearly four years after season 1. I really doubt they had any merchandise in mind when designing it.

Original looks generic as fuck. Just like every other giant robot from that era, its only memorable design aspect is its head.

I realize not worshiping old stuff because it's old ruins my /m/ hipster cred, but I don't care. Life's too fucking short to lie about my tastes to make people think I'm cool on an anonymous imageboard.

Giant robots have always been children's toys, but Gundam definitely started the current model of mecha content being a loss leader designed to sell model kits.

When I said that Robo and Big O, I mean that in the sense of how Katayama said he designed Big O's special attacks to be things he "thought would be cool gimmicks for a toy". I could totally see a kid playing with a Big O toy with spring-loaded Sudden Impact fists and light-up Chrome Buster action. The show references it in how Alex Rosewater thinks of Big Fau and the megadeuses.

Well the problem with that line of thinking is that Big O has difficulty pulling off all of its gimmicks without replacing parts (the one figure that lets you replicate the O Thunder, for example, requires you to buy an option parts set for it). And as for Robo, does it even have anything that could be called a gimmick?
